Sports journalist, commentator and prolific author Ken Piesse has put together an irresistible anthology of rarely published stories, anecdotes and magnificent photographs from the who's who of Australia's best sports writers, historians and photographers.
A very thoughtful Father's Day prezzie from my eldest son which I enjoyed immensely. Definitely aimed at the diehard football fan (yup, that's definitely me!). I particularly enjoyed the sections involving Jack Dyer. He called the game as he saw it - often with hilarious results, which had me smiling quietly to myself. The book is full of offbeat and quirky facts and nostalgic stories from a bygone era, as well as insights into modern game from today's players. A thoroughly enjoyable compilation.
Interesting but I did find some of the stories of bad behaviour, violence on the field etc... a little tiring. The view that sports was better then with all the casual racism, views on women etc... doesn't stack up for me in the modern world.
