Jutta Swietlinski is a German writer and the author of several books in different genres, but each of them with lesbian content. “Returning Home to Her“ is her first book in English – a Sapphic romance novel.
It tells the story of single mom Linet, a lesbian woman with a walking disability and a complicated past. When she is invited to visit her old friend Janet in San Francisco, she crosses the path of her former lover Livia. And events take their course ...
The story line is told from the perspective of first-person narrator Linet, interspersed with flashbacks to scenes from her backstory.
“Returning Home to Her“ is an extraordinary novel that has much more depth than the average, superficial romance. It deals with the question “What is love?“, but also with self-development and self-discovery, overcoming pain and making life choices.
The author succeeds in finding the perfect balance between suspense and compassion, tragedy and comedy, sensuality and romance. The authentic, sensitive, heartfelt way in which Jutta Swietlinski treats her literary characters makes it easy to sympathize with them, so that I was sucked into the story very quickly, which took me on an emotional roller coaster ride, making me laugh, cry, think and a lot of other things ...
So it comes as no surprise that after having read through the whole book, I found myself regretting that it was already over, although it is anything but short (the Kindle edition has 447 pages!).
And the cover is really beautiful.
In short: I just loved the book – everything about it!!! 5 Stars!

Oh, oh, oh! Feels and cries and feels… Rinse and repeat!

Jutta Swietlinski has woven a tale of heartbreak and heartfill as Linet, recently widowed and with a small son to now care for alone, accepts an invitation from her the childhood best friend she’d lost contact with.

Taking leave from her Detroit hospital, where she works as a doctor, Linet travels to San Francisco to stay with Janet, whom she’s not seen for many years, for the opening of her new gallery. As children, Linet and Janet formed a bond that seemed could never be broken. Only it was… Why?

Reuniting with her old friend, Linet is pleased to see Janet is happy in her marriage to Brad, and Janet and Brad fall in love with little Luke, making them primed babysitters for when Linet accidentally bumps into Livia. Livia, the woman with whom she fell in love years before. Livia showed her what love and intimacy could really be, and Janet finds herself once again powerless to resist the gorgeous, vibrant redhead.

On the face of it, Returning Home to Her appears to be a standard second chance romance novel. It isn’t; it’s much more. The story deals with tragedy and loss, with the process of grief, with guilt and responsibility, and with second chances.

Ms. Swietlinski has crafted her MC, Linet, with depth and care, fully rounding her with no shortage of faults. She gives us a complicated heroine—if Linet can be described as such since she spends time analyzing her motives and behavior and finding herself coming up shorter than she thought—older than commonly written (early 40s), a single parent with a small child, and a mild disability (a problematic hip that requires she use a cane… a challenge made all the more significant by adding a child and buggy whenever she’s out). Add to that she’s still getting over the loss of her wife, the mother her son Luke will never know.

When tragedy strikes, Linet is forced to consider her priorities: her rekindled romance with Livia against the needs of the best friend with whom she’s become as close as when they were teens. Can she be what she should to both? Even as it seems Janet and Livia do not warm to each other?

The story takes a major shift around halfway through its 440 pages, defying normal tropes and arcs and changing your expectations. We’re asked to consider what constitutes a soul mate. Is it your deceased wife, your first Sapphic love, your best friend…? Hang on to this ride for the angst, grief, friendship, love, sex, and life-changing events and choices for the main characters, Linet especially.

I laughed, I cried, I cheered and I was fully invested in this novel of 440 value-filled pages. Yes, I too wondered if it might be a little long. Yet, the author wastes no time getting the story moving, taking to the streets of San Francisco and to Janet and Livia. Google Maps might plot you a more direct course, but the scenic route is where all the fun lies.

This has been translated from German (Jutta Swietlinski is a successful German author), so forgive the occasional stilted expression. For it’s what is contained in the words here that will grab you and will resonate long after you finish the book.

Highly recommend for those looking for a romance story with depth and difference.

This love story was a beautifully written, roller coaster and emotionally challenging book. It's incredible that this book is the author's first in English as her native tongue is German. Although the story is over 400 pages, the story and writing flow, only occasionally making minor grammatical errors.

I loved this heartfelt story of single mum Linet with her two year old son Luke, still feeling the pain and sadness of losing her beloved wife in an accident. Seemingly out of the blue, her childhood best friend Janet, whom she has had no contact for many years, invites her to San Francisco for her gallery opening. Janet is happily married to Brad, who is an accomplished photographer, while Janet is an accomplished artist. Enter the scene, Linet's first lover, Livia, who is now working as a doctor in San Francisco. The two reconnect after their breaking up in their hometown of Detroit.

So, all in all, this was a beautiful and sometimes hard to read story of heartbreak, finding old loves and friends and dealing with tragedy. I really enjoyed this one, 4+ stars.

If you're looking for a rollercoaster of emotions, unforeseen plot twists, to fall in love with fictional characters, hate their actions, cry with them, love with them and just feel like a fly on the wall of a house in San Francisco that will watch Linet's life turn upside down, this is definitely the book for you.

I couldn't stop reading, and the fact that it's from Linet's pov, written in the first person just adds a really intimate and personal touch to the whole story.

I can't stress enough how beautifully written this book is, and how thankful I am for the portrait of the queer community Jutta has managed to show. As a member of it, I just love the fact that books like this one exists!

„Heimkehr zu ihr“ ist ein lesbischer Liebesroman, der alles hat, was eine romantische Erzählung braucht. Die aus der Sicht der Protagonistin in Ichform erzählte Story mit zahlreichen Rückblenden, die Karens Vorgeschichte beleuchten, hat oft einen oft melancholischen Unterton, lässt aber immer wieder auch humoristische Momente aufblitzen. Auf eine manchmal ruhige und nachdenkliche, bisweilen aber auch stürmische, leidenschaftliche Weise wird hier die Entwicklung und Selbstfindung der Hauptfigur Karen auf ihrem Weg zur wahren Liebe gezeigt.
Die Lovestory (von der es übrigens auch ein Hörbuch gibt) ist warmherzig und mitreißend geschrieben und hat es mir als Leserin sehr leicht gemacht, mich in Karen und die anderen Figuren mit ihren Stärken und Schwächen einzufühlen und mitzufiebern, ob die Romanheldin es nun endlich schafft, die richtigen Entscheidungen für ihr Leben zu treffen.
Romantisch und äußerst lesenswert!

Deep, soulful romance!
“Returning Home to Her” is a beautiful novel that pulls you emotionally deep into the plot. You live and suffer with the main characters. I was deeply moved by the novel, the writing style fulfills all my desires in a novel, being very emotional, even poetic at times.
It is a novel about great feelings, which are always understandable and which you can experience up close during the journey that the author takes you on. I highly recommend this sensual, profound novel.
Anyone who enjoys a love story that never slips into kitschy and feels real, is well served with this novel. The author obviously knows very well what love is like and how love can be and lets us as readers participate in it.
You should definitely read this book!

An Emotional & Heartbreaking Love Story!

I saw this on Amazon KU and the cover caught my attention since it reminded me of a cover from another writer I love. I never heard of this writer so I checked the reviews. Thanks to A&A with her review: “A beautiful story! Please read this story!!” So I did… once I started I could not put it down. The story consumes you with emotion. You have highs and lows as is normal with life. The character of Linet is a very complicated one. I loved her and hated her at the same time. I questioned some of her decisions (as did she). Having a young child at her age and losing her wife, can make you question so many things. Reconnecting with her best friend, Janet brought so much more to their story. Yes, there is heartbreak and tears. When she runs into an ex love Livia, things start to get out of control. The thing is that you want to keep learning and reading more, so the length of this book did not bother me. The fact the writer is translating from German did not bother me. This is a must read. You will feel better for it. I think I am going to checkout her other writings.

In dem Buch „Heimkehr zu ihr“ von Jutta Swietlinski geht es um die Chefärztin Karen, die nach dem Tod ihrer Partnerin Sara alleinerziehend ist und auf einmal einen Brief von ihrer Jugendfreundin Janet bekommt. Diese knüpft nach einigen Jahren die freundschaftlichen Beziehungen neu und lädt Karen und ihren Sohn ein, den Urlaub bei ihr und ihrem Partner in San Francisco zu verbringen. Dort verbringen sie viel Zeit miteinander und Karen begegnet obendrein ihrer ersten Geliebten wieder, was zu viel Gefühlschaos führt.

Ich habe ich mich sehr darüber gefreut, gut ausgearbeiteten Figuren zu begegnen. Selbst die Anlage des kleinen Sohnes war realistisch (mein Kind ist gerade im ähnlichen Alter) und mir gefiel es, dass die Hauptfigur mit „erwachsenen“ Problemen umgehen muss, wie zum Beispiel in stressigen Situationen zu entscheiden, wem zuerst Care-Arbeit zuteil werden muss, bevor man sich um sich selbst kümmern kann. Auch dass die Hauptfigur eine körperliche Beeinträchtigung hat und im Alltag eben häufig abwägen muss, was noch schaffbar ist, hat das Buch reicher gemacht.

Ebenso habe ich mich darüber gefreut, dass der Ort, an dem das Buch spielt, nicht nur bloße austauschbare Kulisse ist, sondern mit den Eigenheiten und Sehenswürdigkeiten dargestellt wird. Ich habe mich bei der Schilderung der Pride-Szenerie sehr abgeholt gefühlt, weil auch mir der Trubel des Prides sehr schnell zu viel wird, obgleich ich es (wie die Hauptfigur) wichtig finde, dort zu erscheinen. Meines Erachtens wurden manchmal allerdings ein paar kleine Momente versäumt, die zu Karen gepasst hätten. Beispielsweise ist ihr die Berührung ihrer ersten Geliebten Kay zu viel, als diese ihr in einem Arbeitskontext gratulieren will, weil sie Gerede fürchtet. Zwar wird darauf hingewiesen, dass sie selbst sich weiterentwickelt hat, aber gerade in einem Pride-Kontext oder San-Francisco-Kontext hätte ich mir noch ein bisschen mehr Einblicke in die Gefühlswelt als „So fühle ich mich nun als lesbische Frau und lesbische Mutter“ gewünscht. Denn gerade als lesbische Mutter wird frau doch noch mal mit mehr Vorurteilen konfrontiert und braucht ein ganz anderes Standing, als frau es möglicherweise kurz nach dem inneren Outing hatte.

Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt trifft Kayleen, die mir von der Figurenanlage sehr gefiel (auch wenn mir von Anfang an klar war, dass die beiden nicht zueinander passen): In Bezug auf ihren Beruf wurden Psychologin und Psychiaterin synonym verwendet, es sind aber unterschiedliche Berufe. Aus dem Kontext gehe ich davon aus, dass sie eher als Psychiaterin gedacht wurde.

Trauer ist in diesem Buch ein zentrales Thema und ich war beeindruckt, dass sich in Bezug auf den Tod von Brad der Schwere und Vielfalt des Themas gestellt wurde. Gerade auch die eigenen Schuldzuweisungen empfand ich als nachvollziehbar (obgleich sie natürlich nicht realistisch waren, aber Gedankengänge sind eben mitunter intrusiv) und es hat mir gefallen, dass Janet und Karen es sich angesichts der tragischen Umstände es sich nicht leicht gemacht haben, zueinander zu finden.
Blass kam mit dagegen Karens eigene Trauerarbeit in Bezug zu Sara vor. Ihr Name tauchte immer wieder auf, aber ich hätte mir mitunter Erinnerungsfetzen gewünscht, die man eben so hat, wenn man an das Leben mit einer geliebten Person denkt.

Allens in allem war ich beeindruckt und bin sehr dankbar, dass ich dank Jaes Sapphic Book Challenge 2024 auf diese Buch aufmerksam gemacht wurde.

Eine 40 jährige alleinerziehende Mutter die merkwürdige Entscheidungen trifft
Auch andere Protagonisten treffen merkwürdige und unüberlegte Entscheidungen, so daß ich oft dachte ich lese doch ein N/A oder Y/A Buch.
Ihr 19 Monate alter Sohn wird oft 'vergessen' bis der Autorin dann wahrscheinlich doch wieder einfiel das es den ja gibt 🙈
Für mich war dieses Buch leider nichts.

This book was nothing that I have read in a really long time. It had me from the open word. It’s also a story about older women in their 40s who are in the later stages of their lives, but it is very interesting to read a book about two women who love each other, and who are afraid to admit it. The story is definitely full of ups and downs. Twists and turns there is a tragedy in it that I did not see coming there. Kind of threw me for a loop. I have to confess that I did cry a few times throughout the story. The two main characters really broke my heart in a lot of different phases of the book. It is definitely a book about tragedy overcoming heartache. Communication is key in all relationships and I believe that a lot of the time when we are not honest with the people we love, we can lose years of having true authentic relationships. Love is a very beautiful thing, but love with someone who knows your flaws and still loves you anyway, it’s truly a desire that I believe we all have. I highly recommend this book. I came across it doing my usual browsing and it is definitely a hidden Gem Five Stars!!!!

A beautiful romance novel!
“Returning Home to Her” is a very well written lesbian romance novel that moved me deeply emotionally.
You should definitely buy it, read it, rate it, give it to other women. For me, the book is in the top 5 of the best novels I have read so far. Highly recommended!

okay also ich muss sagen ich hatte echt mega Hoffnung, dass es eine schöne Liebesgeschichte wird und irgendwie würde es das auch, aber WIE?????
als Karen nach San Francisco geflogen ist und es davor schon kurz um Kylee ging war schon klar, dass sie sie dort treffen würde und ich habe mich echt gefreut, vorallem nach der Pride Szene. Aber dann kam dieser vollkommen random plot twist von Brads Tod??? ich dachte bis zu dem Zeitpunkt, als Karen mit Nick im Krankenhausflur stand, dass sie das nur träumt. aber er war einfach wirklich tot, was mich ehrlich verwirrt hat, was das jetzt in der Storyline soll? es hatte so ein bisschen den vibe, als wäre der Plan zu Beginn des Buches gewesen, dass Karen und Kylee ein Comeback hinlegen, aber die Autorin hat erst mit Karen gemeinsam realisiert, dass die beiden eigentlich gar nicht zusammenpassen. statt dann aber eine Geschichte über Selbstfindung oder so daraus zu machen und zu zeigen, dass es okay ist single zu bleiben wurde aber trotzdem eine Liebesgeschichte mit Janet erzwungen, die aber ja glücklich mit Brad war, weswegen dieser sterben musste? und sie schlafen miteinander wenige Tage nach dessen Tod?? auf einmal waren die beiden seit 30 Jahren verliebt ohne es zu wissen? prinzipiell gute Idee, dass Freundinnen, die sich nach Jahren wieder sehen realisieren, dass sie für einander bestimmt sind, aber ich fand die Umsetzung absolut nicht gut.

Ein tiefgründiger, bewegender Liebesroman

Der Roman beschreibt eindringlich und gefühlvoll die Geschichte der Ärztin Karen, die einen kleinen Sohn hat, den sie allein großziehen muss, da ihre Ehefrau bei einem tragischen Unfall gestorben ist.

Karens Leben gerät aus den Fugen, als sich eine Freundin aus Jugendtagen, Janet, nach langen Jahren ohne Kontakt zueinander überraschend bei ihr meldet und sie nach San Francisco einlädt.
Karen begibt sich an die Westküste. Dort trifft sie ihre erste lesbische Liebe Kaylee wieder und stellt fest, dass ihre Gefühle füreinander alles andere als erloschen sind. Außerdem nimmt sie ihre sehr intensive Freundschaft mit Janet wieder auf.
Ein tragischer Umstand führt dazu, dass Karen sich bald die Frage stellen muss, wo Freundschaft endet und Liebe beginnt.

Die Ich-Erzählform erlaubt es, ganz dicht bei Karen und ihren Gefühlen zu bleiben, man/frau lebt, leidet und liebt mit ihr mit. Sprachlich ausgefeilt, emotional berührend, manchmal auch poetisch, bietet dieser Liebesroman wirklich alles, was das (frauenliebende) Herz begehrt.

Ein wahrer Lesegenuss, den ich nur wärmstens empfehlen kann. Lesen, genießen, nachwirken lassen.
