Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
Definitely not for me. The story was okay but kind of lame. This was made worse by the art, which was great, but the depictions of the characters was too corny. I won't be reading any more issues.
It began in a backyard in la grange, Kentucky one morning. Rumour is, no one even noticed it at first. Just a tiny patch of discoloration, maybe a square foot. And when they did, they figured it was just ash mould or hickory slime. Something common. But then it started killing things.
By the next day, it had spread nearly twenty miles in every direction. Everything it touched it destroyed. It ate away steel, brick. A week later, it had covered almost the entire state.
The story is set 15 years after the spread of the deadly dark infection that has blighted the Earth. Devouring everything in its wake, humanity survives in makeshift towers built atop of diamond foundations, the only substance known to resist the disease.
In one such group of towers we meet our protagonists. Barely surviving, the community has to pay a 'protection' fee to a local menace who warns of terrors beyond the settlement.
This alone wouldn't make for a good story, so expect some twists and turns as their lives are inevitably turned upside down!
A great opening. I look forward to reading the rest of the series as they come out. 5 stars.
The story sets up an interesting premise: a world-wide natural disaster called "the shroud" appeared, destroying everything it touched. The world could've survived, if it had rallied together. Instead, it pulled apart and many lives (and "modern society") was lost. A decade later, humanity lives in isolated communities called "Needles," or high rises that are protected from "the shroud" by way of their diamond base. "The shroud's" only weakness is diamond, apparently. With diamond production seized by the rich, it now falls to our plucky heroes to determine whether rumors of a new source of diamond (a "black diamond island," formed inside the earth itself) are true.
+ - The art is among the best I've seen in the ComiXology Originals I've tried. - The cast is varied and visually distinct - The premise could certainly go places
- - The work has a look / aesthetic, but I'm not sure it'll have the substance to maintain my interest. A lot of the work reads as relatively boiler plate post-apocalyptic sci-fi. - (nit-pick) The work becomes surprisingly gory at the halfway mark. It's not a problem, but I wouldn't have minded a bit more of a heads up.
Conclusion: I plan to read another volume or two. If it doesn't wow me by then, I'll probably drop it.
A great comixology book. Great drawings and great plot. Scott Snyder and crew did a hell of a job.
What's going on? The Shroud is going on. Growing bigger each day, engulfing the Earth, destroying everything it touches, steel, glass, everything but diamonds. Instead of producing city size stretches of diamonds for mankind to live on, greed and self-interest is the flavor of the day. Now mankind lives on needles that rest on small diamond squares, somewhat secured from the shroud.
Bullying goes on, barter goes on, an attack by a warlord goes on. To find out what really goes on, you will have to pickup this issue and the issues that follow.
The story is compelling, and the art is beautifully done. The colorful dystopian setting is both intriguing and visually striking, drawing you into a fascinating world full of potential.
The first issue sets up an interesting premise that leaves me eager to see where the story goes next. I can’t wait to dive into issue #2!
“I eagerly anticipate that Scott Snyder will deliver an engaging story. The introduction to this new tale has already captured my interest. The whimsical and captivating world depicted in the story is both amusing and alluring. Now, I eagerly await what unfolds in the upcoming episodes.”
Bright start This is a perfect start to another dystopian tale by Scott Snyder. He just keeps hitting them out of the park almost everyone with his Comixology collaborations. This is another new take with good art and a story that has begun strongly. Waiting for the next one.
I'm all in on this. New characters and a post-apocalyptic world. I'm intrigued. A world set up by people just making it and those that see possibility. I'm not sure where this story is going, but I need to get to the end. The beginning was a little slow but it picked up enough for me to want to read #2
