Aisling Keane is an Investigator with the secretive spy organization known as Dragonfly. Thrust unexpectedly into the field, she and her mechanical Dragon partner are surrounded by danger and intrigue. Aisling thought she’d been hired to be a secret agent – then found that Dragonfly required new recruits, even skilled witches like her, to prove themselves. One clue leads to the next, and she’s assigned to work with Lance Stone on a mission. Small crimes herald larger ones, and the larger ones suggest a mysterious organization lurking in the shadows. When an ally turns into an enemy, Dragonfly has to send a new agent into the field. The mission is Infiltrate, discover and escape. But in the secretive world of international crime, nothing is ever really simple. And simple never meant easy. Fortunately, Aisling’s newest creation of technology and magic - a mechanical Dragon about the size of an eagle - has just been improved by her infomancer coworker and given a cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Cait’s little sister will need all the help Shimmer can provide. Despite the workload, she’ll still need to find time for family and her coven. A danger is on the horizon, and the coven’s guardian is worried. Will it get in the way of Aisling’s new job? The investigator-turned-agent wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m TR Cameron, science fiction author. I’ve been an avid consumer of the genre since I was six, I think, when I broke the seal on my Dad’s copies of the Asimov Foundation books. It’s been all downhill since then.
I have a day job that I love most days, and writing is pretty much my only consistent hobby. When I find time that’s not already filled with my wife, my daughter, my writing, my work, or dodging the affections of our clowder of cats, you can find me playing video games (currently Dishonored 2 – I’m a little behind the times on this one), watching things (Marvel movies, American Gods, Agents of Shield, Justified, The Expanse, Gotham), playing board games, or, naturally, reading.
My favorite authors in Sci-Fi are David Weber, Jean Johnson, John Scalzi, CJ Cherryh, and the giants: Asimov, Pohl, Bear, Heinlein, etc. I read a lot in other genres too, and am a big fan of Matthew Woodring Stover, Michael Anderle, Jim Butcher, and I could go on and on and on. If I had to choose one favorite, though, it would be Stephen R. Donaldson, whose Thomas Covenant series was transformative for me.
Probably my pie-in-the-sky dream for my writing career is that someone would make a movie or television show of my books and I could be a part of the production. Sure, unlikely, but a clowder-dodger can dream, right? My more practical dream is that I can keep writing and both entertaining and connecting with my readers for years and years to come.

Disappointingly, no dragon taming involved in this book.
Needs better continuity editing as the main character acts inconsistently and the internal logic is often weak (or absent). Makes it hard to fully engage with the story when one keeps on tripping on dangling plot threads.
Despite the above, the basic concept is interesting enough to make it worth trying book two … barely.
Huh! I've done it again. Enjoying the series and am well into book 4 with out writing a review. At least it shows that the books are compulsive, I started book 1, 4 days ago and opened book 4 last night.
TR Cameron's writing is hard to put down - lots of fun banter, action and suspense along with snippets of wisdom.
In your busy life TR please make room for more writing - preferably lots of it. Thanks for the fun entertainment TR.
The characters were a bit 2 dimensional and the plot was a bit shallow. But it set the groundwork for next books that will hopefully be more rounded. The reliance on magic, both offensively and defensively as well as in day to day activities can make the characters difficult to relate to in my opinion.
I am very impressed with this start to a new series. I totally bought into it from page one. I did kind of wish for more dragon action, but as he was being built, I accepted the wait. I am so looking forward to lots of magical action and dragon antics.
The action scenes at the beginning and end of the story were good, but I was kind of bored with the rest of the story. Just wanted to finish the book. Don’t think I’ll be continuing with the series.
Dnf 70% Let that sink in. I was literally 3/4 of the way through the book and chose not to finish the book. I don’t know, but this book felt very much like it was the fourth in the series not the first in the series. So many references to things that happened and I’m wondering was this a spin off? I don’t know. I felt lost most of the book. And it’s very much action filled which is great if that’s your thing. But I was hoping for more urban fantasy. I never really connected with characters. Part of that was because I felt like there was some greater story that I didn’t understand. And because I felt like I was playing catch-up in this story, I just couldn’t connect to it. I kept reading in hopes that I would find that magical moment. where it all clicked, but I just couldn’t get there. And also could’ve used with a little extra editing. The main character is whisked away on her first mission with no preparation allowed but then later on talks about the suspect, and how she viewed all these pictures of him, and he was always wearing suits and I thought when did you do that because you were whisked away at a moments notice. So this book was a miss for me.
Almost as good as the Cait saga. Believe it or not, there is more boring time in between the 67 seconds of OH CRAP!!! instead of the opposite during missions. Great read. But maybe get Victoria to get her a 3rd frazzle life like her sister. Thanks Jeff Howell
If you’re not already familiar with the Oriceran world, I recommend reading one of the introductory series first. Otherwise, jump right in- this is a blast. Almost immediate action sequences, with the suite of magic-infused hand to hand combat we’ve grown to love from Cameron and team. A fun character and family. And an AI dragon that shows a lot of promise for future books!
Aisling goes from Investigator to probationary agent and beyond in her first book. She interacts with a wide cast of characters. She creates a mechanical dragon who is given a much better AI than she can devise.
Lots of action, interaction, and witty conversation.
Aisling has joined a secret organization and is now a spy. It is good to see her family again from the previous series, as I really like all the characters. The new characters in this series are fun and the storyline is very Bondish. I like the secret weapons, the action, and of course, and the dragons. I am looking forward to the next books in the series.
I loved Cait and was willing to give this one a try. Aisling and Shimmer are now my new obsession! Great story with action and mystery. Keep them coming!
I read this book on a whim and enjoyed it immensely. Fast paced and a good mix of action and humor. I look forward to learning more about the world and characters.
She is now working for a secret organization. She is going out on missions with an agent. Her family doesn’t know what she does. She makes herself a dragon!
It followed on, very smoothly, from the Witch Warrior series, and I'm loving getting to know Aisling more.
I'm already in love with Shimmer, and can't wait to see how much he develops.
I'd thought, from the title of the book, that Aisling was to get a real Dragon partner, with maybe one of Aza's relatives but, having thought about it, Aisling creating her own mechanised Dragon, especially with a really clever AI, is going to be even more perfect for this tech-nerd!
Like Cait, Aisling is coping well with the two sides of her life, and I was really pleased to see the problem coming from the East was mentioned - then I read TRC's Authors' Notes, and saw why - I'm sooo glad he's continuing on with the story this way, even when other parts keep changing for him! Lol
It'll be interesting how her relationship with Lance will go on - and her friendship with Victoria, really gives her the 'fun' that she needs, to counteract the busy, busy, nerdness of her life!
This book has been a perfect introduction to Aisling's actual working life, and I love how her life in Ireland has prepared her so well for this job
I'm really looking forward to reading the second book of this series: ' Never Say Never To A Dragon'. - I also love how the book titles mock the old spy movie titles, too, as they make me snigger every time I realise which one they alude to! Lol
But I was just sent a prequel to the whole series - just for signing up with T R Cameron's newsletter - so I'll read that first. It's called: 'Secret Agent Witch: The First Day'.
Once I've finished that, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I thought of it - and then I'll get back to the meat of the series, and begin book two!
This is a spin-off series from Warrior Witch, as series which for me started okayish and ended on a bit of a low note. So I guess I set my up for high risk of failure when trying out this new series. I did like the characters in Warrior Witch though and these books are rather light and thus fast reading so…
I was afraid that the authors would dive right into this nonsensical virtual pseudo-science hacking crap that they were so fond of in Warrior Witch but they did not really go there, at least not too much.
What I do like with this book though is the spy slash secret agent slant of it. It is like James Bond, well a James Bond trainee in this case, in the world of magic with cool gadgets, weapons and such stuff. There’s even Q or rather multiple Q’s for various types of cool stuff.
I don’t know where the authors got the title from though. It does not have much to do with the book or story. The only dragon in the book is the mechanical dragon mentioned in the book blurb. Said dragon is quite cool though once he got upgraded with a real AI which, of course, soon proves to be both sentient and somewhat snarky… and he “requires upgrades” as he puts it.
The story, the missions (yes Aisling is a real full time agent going on actual missions) are quite different from Witch Warrior even though the writing style is similar. I hope it stays that way and she stays on a single track and doesn’t take the wrong turn into a gazillion sub-threads.
It was a decent read, not great but decent. I guess we will see if it stays that way of if the series goes into to-be-dropped land. First book was good enough that I will have a go at the second one in the series.
Once again, the blurb on this one is (slightly) inaccurate. The mechanical dragon doesn't come into play until you're more than halfway through the book, so take the description with a grain of salt. Other than that, the description is pretty good considering what happens, though to be honest, the coven isn't mentioned more than a handful of times during the whole book, so it's not really a factor in this story. I do expect that will change in other books in the series though. For what it's worth though, I did like this story, and certainly intend to read more books if I can get them. I mean, dragons, who doesn't like dragons, even mechanical ones. Plus, you've got a agent that doesn't bother taking names (most of the time), just kicks butt, and always in the most flashy style too. What's not to like?
An excellent beginning to a series I have had far too long without reading. I am very impressed with all three authors and have yet to read anything by any of them that did not deserve the 5 stars I give them. This book was no exception. The main character, Aisling is a very strong female protagonist who would be an excellent role model for any strong minded female capable of thinking for herself and making life developing decisions for herself. Thankfully those types are becoming more and more prevalent. The plot is straightforward and easily followed, and the premise is finding out what a field agent actually does in her Dragonfly organization, a mixture of magic, technology, and sheer wits. I highly recommend this book
Unfortunately, the World building is something of a mishmash. And I am not real confident about the hand to hand fighting techniques. And where the energy for portaling is coming from.
But it is the first book by the Author I have read. Perhaps another series of stories with a better, more coherent world building will show off the rest of the solid story craft being shown. Congratulations. This eBook had none of the copy editing errors I stumble over in better ebooks.
I really love the world building and the idea of the possibility of this universe, but the plot was severely lacking for me. It just felt like we were jumping from one thing to another because the author wanted us to see all of these different aspects of this beautiful and detailed world that they spent so long creating.
Congratulations to T.R. Cameron, Martha Carr and Michael Anderle for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and exciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
I loved this continuation but the dragon wasn't well explained. It was just there. Does she interact with the dragon so she can see what it sees or is it more Independent then her bird is. But the story line is really good and more may be known with the next boom
Well this is another kicking adventure with some familiar characters (for those of that have read other series by this group), great action and the promise of a heck of a lot more. Highly recommend if you enjoy high octane action, unconventional sidekicks and sassy MCs!!
DNF at 39%. Probably should have stopped sooner, but was hoping it would get better. This is some of the most tell-don’t-show writing I have ever read. The characters are caricatures. I genuinely don’t understand the high reviews for this. It feels like someone told an AI to write a supernatural spy novel.
Good first book in a new series. I like this better than the Caitlin book series. There aren't 3-4 different plots (and jobs and appearances) all going at the same time. This seems to be much more focused and has a clearer direction. Hopefully it stays that way as the series progresses.
Great stories Great characters Some repetitiveness with Cait’s stories, obviously necessary for those who have not read those Looking forward to developments Sort of fell the Stonehenge angle needs resolution Thank you!
