Safely tucked away on my keeper shelf are two books that, to this day, remain my all time favorite western romances. One is my guilty little pleasure- A heart So Wild by Johanna Lindsey- and the other is Another Dawn by Sandra Brown.

A sequel to Sunset Embrace featuring Ross & Lydia Coleman, Another Dawn picks up the tale, years later, with the marriage of their only daughter.

Everyone has come to the Coleman ranch for the marriage of Banner Coleman to local boy Grady Sheldon. Including Jake Langston, the much beloved friend of all the Coleman's. Jake, "Bubba" to Ross and Lydia, keeps his distance from the family because he shares a history with them that no one wants to talk about- much less Jake himself (Sunset Embrace). But he finds himself intricately intertwined with them once more when Banner's fiance's infidelities come to light- at the altar!

To salve her wounded pride, Banner decides she won't be cheated of her wedding night, so she goes to the one man as lonely as she- Jake Langston. When she approaches him he thinks she's crazy but he can't help but notice the woman she's become seemingly overnight. In the end, he takes what she's offering and it changes their relationship forever.

Imagine their surprise when, the very next day, Ross offers Jake a job as foreman on the ranch he's is giving to Banner. When his signing on becomes the caveat to owning the ranch, she reluctantly agrees because- more than anything- she wants to get on with her life.

Their time together on the ranch crackles with sexual tension as neither of them can forget that passion filled night, though Jake tries to with all his might. When Jake almost loses her one stormy night, he decides he's tired of fighting what his heart's known all along- they were meant to be together.

Another Dawn has so much going for it that I don't know where to begin. Sexy, tortured hero, feisty intelligent heroine and all kinds of heart wrenching situations that keep you on the edge your seat. Full of longing and heated glances, this is romance that goes straight for the gut. Even as I reread it recently, I felt like I was taken on a journey, though I knew exactly where they were going.

Be warned: The ending will break your heart- even as it breaks the biggest rule in romance. But that's what makes this novel a cut above the rest. (It certainly would have been less moving without it!)

This is the kind of book that made me fall in love with reading and I still can't recommend Another Dawn any more highly then I always have.

5 out of 5.

(If you can, read Sunset Embrace first- but it's perfectly fine as a stand alone!)

DNF AT 50 PERCENT

Well, this is new. I've tried to get through, I really did. But when I'm reminded about how our hero loves the heroine's MOTHER every goddamn chapter, I want to simply die.

“I’m not the woman you want either, Jake,” she said harshly. “You want my mother.”

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUTTTTTT???💀💀

Banner, the heroine is 18 while Jake is 36, this man has been in love with this girls mother for YEARS, he even killed someone for her.

“How could this be wrong? You used to kiss my scrapes and bruises to make them well. Kiss me now, Jake. Take away this terrible pain inside me. Even if you must pretend I’m my mother.”

His love for the heroine's mother (Lydia) is SHOWED down your throat.⚰️

Jake shifted restlessly in his chair. Always before his reason had been Lydia. Banner had hit the nail right on the head last night. He couldn’t stay long at River Bend because he loved her too much. Sooner or later it would become obvious and that would destroy the friendship he shared with both her and Ross. It wasn’t worth the risk. But now he had a new reason.

He gazed down into the face that was never far from his conscious mind. He had loved it for so long he barely remembered a time when he didn’t. He felt his defenses weakening, unraveling like an old rope.
When Lydia asked anything of him, could he refuse her? He had killed for her once, rid her of the stepbrother who had brought her nothing but disgrace and misery. That Clancey had been Luke’s murderer had been a convenient coincidence. He would gladly have eliminated Clancey Russell from Lydia’s life anyway.

Whose story is this again? This woman Lydia has been married and in love with some other guy. LEAVE HER ALONE JAKE. You fucked her daughter, like? LMAOO😭

“Why did you stay, Jake?”
He met her gaze honestly. “Because Lydia asked me to.”

And let's not forget the fact that Jake is supposed to be 36 while acting like a dumb seventeen year old. I could not.

Okay, big time yuck and DNF. As bad as some of the reviewers say but for all new reasons.

Epic, epic 1980s style slut-shaming and hypocrisy. I doubt if the Victorians and ole-time cowboys and schoolmarms were as bad as Sandra Brown's characters.

I never even got to Naksed’s concerns over the hero and the heroine’s mother. I had other issues to worry about.

Another Dawn didn't have the same kind of angstiness that Sunset Embrace did, but that doesn't take away from its awesomeness. I enjoyed catching up on all of the wonderful characters from the first story and what their lives entailed over the past two decades since their first story. I was able to get a bit of an angst fix with Jake's constant rejection of Banner because of his age and his close friendship with her parents. The story had a little of everything else I could ask for too too: steamy sex scenes, a fantastic story, tears of sadness, well deserved retribution and then our characters finally got their happily ever after. I enjoyed every second of it.

While I loved the story of this book, I was however completely upset with she killed off the hero and main charactor of 'Sunset Embrace.' I have not read a Sandra Brown book since reading this one.

noooooooooo..................

Book 2 in the series and the hero of book 1 is killed off!

What in the WORLD just happened?????

My rose coloured glasses are blown to smithereens.

I LOVE this author's work and this AUDIObook is testament to her prolificacy, BUT this book is a strict no-no for my dear soft romantic heart; because this IS categorized in Amazon as Romance > Historical and Romance > Contemporary. That's what I was expecting. That and an update on the MCs of the first book.

And it WAS wonderful to see the beautiful love and passion between Ross and Lydia (Hxh of book 1) still going strong - utterly captivating. It warmed my heart and fed my need for affirmation that all the horrors they'd endured before settling into a solid relationship was worth it. And that it lasted for decades.

Then he dies.

At the end of the book.

JUST like that.

Of course, I had to finish it; against my better judgement...because, OCD...and a desperate hope that someone was dreaming that scene and he didn't REALLY die. (Much like that scene in the 80's soapie Dallas, where Bobby Ewing is alive after being dead for a year, because his wife had only dreamed that he'd died....) For once I didn't scoff at that awful soapie trope: I'm like: plse be alive, pls be dreaming, pls be like a soapie, pls rise from the dead.........ANYTHING... but not dead and gone and no longer loving lydia...

And that's only the SECONDARY romance in this book.

The main Hxh
...sigh...
I should've stopped waaayyyy before the end, but didn't because:
A) I love the way she writes
B) I loved the narration
C) I loved to hear how gorgeous a man this hero is...Ad nauseam...yes, I contradict myself...but it's Jake Langston......you'd only know if you read it...there's not a single unknotted knicker in all of Fort Worth and beyond.
D) I wanted to know just WHERE these two were going, because they're pretty much doomed from day one:
- The OW is her mother
- He adores the ow
- He has loved the OW from before the h was even born
- He STILL loves the OW
- The Hxh fight like idiots; most unpleasant; no thrill to watch
- The attraction is intense but that's all they have on their side
- They're not soulmates at ALL: its about duty & the time is right for him to settle down now
- The h is a brat
- The H is cruel
- too many other cliches which I somehow couldn't tear myself away from...

So now I make up scenarios in my head about a 3rd book....
...and no matter how each one starts, none end well, because in my Romantica the MCs only have ONE soulmate and Lydia's has her chance, Jake's had his and the h is too obsessed with the H who doesn't love her the way she should be.

Heroine-nya, Banner Coleman is very very annoying me dari awal hingga akhir novel. Entah kenapa Ross dan Lidya Coleman menamakan anaknya ini dgn nama anti-mainstream gini (utk pria aja gak umum apalagi utk anak gadis, sangat aneh. Banner = spanduk).

Saya tahu gadis remaja 18 thn masih labil dan suka berubah-ubah, tapi bukan berarti boleh dong bersikap murahan kpd pria yg konon katanya dicintainya (saya shock waktu Banner menawarkan dirinya pd Jake dgn merendahkan dirinya, menyuruh Jake menganggap Banner sbg ibunya - Lidya. OMFG).

Betrayal had ruined Banner Coleman's wedding day and on her wedding night she was a jilted bride. Now old seeds of greed and desire are harvesting a scandal --- and Banner's affair with an old family friend could shatter a friendship and a family.

The Texas countryside was wide and wild, the barn was warm and musty, and the passion between Banner Coleman and her parents' best friend, Jake Langston, was going to be the start of trouble. Betrayal had ruined Banner's wedding day, and now on her wedding night she was a jilted bride. Jake was the toughest cowhand in Texas, yet Banner had broken down his resistance, setting loose emotions neither of them expected. Now Jake and Banner were caught up in a scandal that could tear apart a friendship and a family. But theirs wasn't the only sin in this rough town outside of lusty Fort Worth. Greed and desire stretched back to a wagon train journey twenty years before, and this cattle land would explode once more with a man's hunger and a woman's enduring love.

...I don't even know if I enjoyed this book. I don't know how to put this but this book had me feelin' hot then cold, cold then hot, and hot and cold. No doubt it had me completely captivated the entire time, but I couldn't come to terms with the tragic ending. When I say it's tragic, I don't mean unhappy because the book does have a traditional 'happily ever after' but with Ross's death it just feels like the perfect picture is incomplete. I found it difficult to understand why Sandra Brown would feel the need to write such a tragic death for him when he and Lydia worked so hard for their happiness. If I had read Sunset Embrace before this one I wouldn't be sitting here writing a review for a one-star book. No, I would be writing a review for a one of two-star book. The only thing that made it all bearable for me was because I hadn't read Ross's story. I know Lydia and him had twenty years of happiness, but it's never enough is it?

I loved the Texan flavour to this book. I'm not a particular fan of Western Romance but this book does it so well. It's hard to explain it exactly but the setting truly enhances the story. As for the characters, I adored Banner and Jake. I know it was initially hard for me to accept that Jake was twice Banner's age and in love with her mother, but gradually age lost its importance and I came to enjoy their romance without feeling any discomfort. Banner and Jake's romance is one of those intensely and passionately stormy ones. It was a constant cycle of love, hurt, passion, yearning and more hurt. It was hard not to find myself drawn into the web of emotions and there were so many more facets to this story than just Banner and Jake's relationship. I think Sandra Brown reached much deeper than the stereotypical historical romance with this one. And this is the first time I've ever given 5 stars to a heartbreaker.

He nodded. "Well, good night," Please, Banner, don't look at me like that. I want to hold you, but I can't.
"Good night." Jake, why are you punishing me for a sin that belonged to both of us? Don't hate me for it.
"Lock up good now, hear?" I remember how sweet you were, Banner, and I want you again. But I can't, I can't...
"I will. Good night." You were so sweet to me that night, so tender and caring. Why are you being so mean to me now?

I loved Banner and Jake. There is a huge age difference, but it wasn't creepy. If you've read the first book "Sunset Embrace", you really feel for Jake in this book. He is such a great character, and Banner is young without being stupid. The ending broke my heart, but I still re-read this one every chance I get!

It's bad. So bad it's almost good. As these older romances can be, it's either really bad or really good. This one is a wonderful mix of both the very bad and the very good. I cringed a lot during this book and I cheered a lot too. At times it seemed like Sandra Brown had written two totally different sets of characters, especially the hero. Even in this older historical-romance story Sandra Brown showed that she was not going to be bound by the unwritten rules of romance and the plot refused to conform, which made for a very interesting story.

Banner Coleman, the Princess of River Bend and beloved daughter of Ross and Lydia, has her perfect wedding day crapped on by her cheating fiancé. Since what Banner wants, Banner gets, this is a real heavy blow to the 18 year old. She was looking forward to her wedding night and she wants one, so she is determined to get one, just without a groom.

Jake Langston and his family have been friends, almost family with the Coleman's for 20 years. He has known Banner since her birth and knows she is headstrong and willful. She is also beautiful and sensitive and he has always cared for her. Banner is set on seducing him and Jake is powerless to resist.

The passion and the guilt of that night in the barn follow Banner and Jake as Ross sets the terms for Banner's new ranch and one term is that Jake be the foreman and protect Banner. As these two get to know each other as adults and endure the growing pains of a new relationship, Jake's past casts a long shadow and secrets long buried can prove deadly.

Another Sandra Brown book I've read and absolutely adored.
I liked it. Even though Banner and Jack got on my nerves, their love and chemistry totally made up for it, I couldn't help but forgive them. 🤭

One of my favorites. I loved Jake in this book. The book is even better when you have read Sunset Embrace first. We watched him grow up. I hurt at the end like so many others but somehow it works better than a total happy ending.

Sunset Embraces Ross still didn't win me over in this book at least not as a husband. Lydia his wife still deserved better than a man even after 20 years thinks of his first wife so much. I know they had a child but Lydia raised the child. Just shocked that she was brought in to this book too.

Jake and Banners story was refreshing and believable, with her being so young and him being older. She did act slightly immature and Jake definitely older and wiser. Thrilled that Pris got her ending too.

I could and would have read on if there had been more to this book or others after it. Ashame she didn't follow up on it. Would have loved to hear Lee's story!

I was really looking forward to reading this book because of the good reviews but this book is definitely not for me and a complete waste of my time.

There was NO descriptive sex scenes, or sex scenes at all, really. A Young Adult book would have had more of a description of making out, groping, oral, and walking around the perimeter of describing intercourse than this book.

I liked the concept of the plot and the GR description when I read it, but it really disappointed me.

I had to keep skipping page after page to get to anything remotely interesting and what really fucking pissed me off with this was that the two main love interests, especially the H, Jake, would try everything in his power to hurt, insult, and avoid Banner and then when something happened to her (like her not coming back in a certain amount of time and not finding her to her getting deathly sick), he would then regret treating her so poorly.

H and h were almost always arguing, which in some cases for romance books and the charcters, is fine, because they're so hot and bothered for each other they can't stand it, but it didn't work in this book for me. I just thought they were both somewhat immature and fucking annoying.

Banner was okay but she was too stubborn in most of this book, but she didn't get on my nerves nearly as much as Jake.

And, in my opinion, this book was way too long; a lot of the issues could've been resolved way before the last 30% of the book and the "villains" in this book were just annoying and, this may make me sound like a heartless bitch, but I prayed to God that Jake would take up his threat and just shitting kill them already.

I definitely do NOT recommend this book to anyone unless you like a pretty "clean" romance based in the 1890's with annoying and immature love interests, stupid villains, and too much description on everything that is not important to this story.

I’m SO glad I own this! I was lucky to find book one at the library, and loving western romance like I do, I got it and then bought this one when I saw it for sale at the library. I was intrigued by the age gap part of the description as well, so this one checked all the boxes for me.

I loved Jake more than Ross, but I definitely was not pleased with what happened to Ross at the end of this one. Fair warning, this book isn’t for the faint of heart. 😣

That said, Jake and Banner were awesome. I thought the age gap was handled very well, so I was never creeped out or anything. But again, fair warning- it’s a gap of about 20 years. You definitely feel the difference more at the beginning, but as it goes on Banner does show growth- and Jake as well. In a way, he was actually probably more immature than she was at the start because of his nomad lifestyle and the fact that he could never settle down. So they really both helped each other grow.

I also love a good family saga and this provided that in spades. I’m definitely going to miss these characters, but I know I’ll be re-reading this bad boy for a long time to come! 💕

Honorable mentions:

*Thank the lord Priscilla and Grady are dead! 💀

*Poor Lydia 😣

*Lee and Micha deserve their own books/heroines! 😩

Simplemente NO!!!!

I put off reading this book for so long because I knew the ending would break my heart, and it did. I actually feel sick about it because I loved Ross and Lydia so much. Sunset Embrace is one of my favorite books ever.

I don’t think I’ve ever despised a book character as much as I despise Priscilla Watkins. What a brilliant villain!

This book was so beautiful, though. So, so good. This one wasn’t quite as angsty as Sunset Embrace but there was a good deal of rejection and cruel words from Jake.

Sandra Brown’s Western romance is unrivaled. This book shattered my heart.

There were both positives and negatives about this book that struck me rather forcefully. Let's start with the positives.

There is absolutely no denying that Sandra Brown is a top-notch word-smith. Her characterisations were flawless, even the minor characters felt very, very real. The plot was well-thought-out, with each revelation being left open to the light at just the right moment to keep the plot-line moving nicely. The settings were well-portrayed but not over-detailed.

So, the negatives..... Let's start with the characters. For a start, I found it extremely difficult to take a woman named Banner seriously. (My apologies to any who are actually named this.) Also, I could NOT get over the age-gap between her and Jake. I may be a prude; but I consider an EIGHTEEN YEAR age gap a little too much. Here I shall make no apologies. If you are the sort of person who believes that age is just a number then I shall respond with the fact that so is the number of years that paedophiles are jailed for. Since each character was described by the other as an adult, I may have been able to ignore it. However, Ms. Brown kept harping back to the fact, which I found more than mildly creepy.
I was also annoyed by how Banner was put across as this tough, in-it-to-win-it, self-dependant woman who was something as a role-model. As a woman barely older than Banner, I found her actions despicable; and though I genuinely liked her, I also found her a little pitiable. I certainly did not envy her.

In conclusion this is what I like to call a, 'sick-day book.' Something ridiculously romantic, with little-enough of a plot-line that you don't have to exert too much brain-power on it. It's enjoyable, full stop.

So as I was wandering through the library, I glanced at the Sandra Brown books. "Another Dawn" caught my eye. I had tried to read it once before, but 19th century cowboys just aren't my thing, so I returned it unread. But I was feeling adventuresome and wanted to stray from my norm, so I checked it out and vowed to read it from start to finish.

Um...Hmm...Can't say I liked it all that much, but it kept me turning the pages more out of frustration than anything. Unmarried women were either virgins or whores and boys/men were randy, frequented whorehouses and didn't care who they screwed as long as their brides were pure and innocent.

Anyway, the main story revolves around virginal 18-year-old Banner Coleman, whose husband-to-be was shot at the altar by the father of the girl he knocked up, and 36-year-old Jake Langston, a self-proclaimed saddle tramp and shiftless cowboy that farmers hide their daughters from. Stinging from being humiliated by her groom, Banner seduces Jake (who has been in love with Banner's mother since he was 16 years old) on her wedding night. (Talk about your ick factor!) Afterward they are embarrassed, feel guilty and go their separate ways. But -- surprise, surprise -- circumstances bring them back together to work closely at the same ranch. They end up falling in love with each other but the suddenly noble Jake feels he's undeserving of a good woman's love and tries (ultimately unsuccessfully) to keep his distance from Banner.

Sexual tension, misunderstandings, indecision, verbal sparring and just plain stupidity on both their parts makes for a maddening yet page-turning read.
