Ben Grimm travels to the Jersey Shore (and beyond) for a Grimm family reunion. Things get even more awkward when Doctor Strange shows up with information about the time-and-space-traveling thief who's been haranguing the THING. Don't miss part three of the greatest THING story ever told, as far as we know...
Well this issue certainly works to catch-up on some of the issues with time we have experienced, and as I unfortunately figured the reason the time traveling scavenger, known as Ogdu, gets a magic ring in the first place is because of Ben and Doctor Strange. Once again it was a relatively normal…actually scratch that, today was a monumental day for Ben! He bought out an entire restaurant so he could have a nice meal with his wife and aunt and uncle, specially so he can gift his aunt and uncle 5 million dollars! They are the ones who helped raise him and teach him right from wrong, and he’s been wanting to do this for a very long time to show his gratitude. But super heroics always have a way of catching up, and luckily this restaurant has very good insurance. Only moments later does a Doctor Strange portal appear and a giant monster rushes out as Ben grabs his party and moves them out of the way just in time. He was able to clobber it down just in time for Strange to apologize, as that thing happened to follow him through as he was trying to get to Ben. Doctor Strange knows the owner of the ring Ben gave him, Mekron, and because they have a signature of his power from the future…it leaves them vulnerable and traceable. Hell, he could even teleport to them or teleport them away if he wanted to…ooops, he may have spoken a bit too soon on that, as that’s exactly what happens!
One minute they are standing in a bloody restaurant, the next they are staring at a post apocalyptic New York. But this isn’t exactly the future, Steange sees right through it as a spell that forces a victim to relieve their triumphs and tragedies for infinity to try and break them. But the spell isn’t for them, it’s for the guy chained to a rock behind them, none other than our time traveling scavenger who was caught trying to steal the ring the first time. The images flash before their eyes of this future of tribes and scavengers, as we see him at 7 years old get his first avengers logo brand for assembling the tribe against invaders. If he got that brand for assembling, I would hate to know what he got the red skull one for, lol. But it’s an interesting society, he has mentioned this before in passing but they are completely devout to the heroes of their past. But all that changes for the traveler when he finds a SHIELD bunker and leans the truth of these heroes “dark legacy,” that has put the traveler on his path today. Whelp, at the least seeing those flashbacks we know this guy had a nose at one point.
Now the plan is simple, Strange detects Mekron nearby, so he will break the spell and Ben will deal with the traveler while Strange deals with the sorcerer. As the spell is broken we see Mekron atop his throne with his children at his side. Strange doesn’t like that the children have to be involved and he may have to call the Magical children’s welfare council, but there are both over 40 years old…so you know what, good enough, lol. As the clobberin goes into full swing, the sorcerers lock into combat as Ben grabs the traveler and pulls him back before he can go through a portal. Unfortunately he was able to grab a gun to blast Ben back with, and as no one was watching for Mekron’s children, they were able to slip from behind and jump on strange to start stabbing him. Luckily strange was able to deal a knockout blow to Mekron before he went down, but that left the children scrambling from strange to try and get their father’s magical ring. Ben throws a rock column at the traveler to distract him while he ran over to help a bleeding out strange. There is a health potion in his belt, but as the traveler turned his gun to the children with the magical ring, Ben accidentally gripped and broke the bottle holding the potion. The traveler was able to get his hands on the ring after all, and Ben was able to fling the healing juice into strange, allowing him to create a portal out of there before the traveler tore the entire realm down around them and got away. Ben was reunited with his family and some of the other FF members, and Strange was carted off to urgent care Wong style. As the issue comes to an end we see Ben and Alicia enjoying their night in…only for the traveler to open up a small portal and start spying on them. Right as Ben puts on his pants and grabs his FF gizmo he notices the readings for the traveler being nearby…only to not realize that a portal his size has opened up underneath him and he just stepped into it. Sufficient to say, Alicia is quite confused as to why his screaming into a void just cut out so abruptly.
