Victoria's nine year relationship is coming to an end. She can feel it. It's not that she's giving up, but no amount of detective work, complaining to her best friend, Sienna, or stilted conversations with her fiancé about the lack of sex in their relationship is going to save them now.
Anyway, she's got plenty of guys fawning over her and a lifetime of Prada bags and Cartier to keep her busy. She doesn't need love. And as her mum would say - "Happy ever afters are fairy tales and nothing more."
So, when the stone cold, annoyingly beautiful and utterly charming, Amara, enters Victoria's life during her weekly Thursday night out with Sienna, she's the last person to expect anything to happen. She's not interested in a new relationship, falling in love or fairy tales. And least of all with a woman who's stuck up flawless persona is threatening to ruin her carefully orchestrated life.
But as Victoria is about to learn, love has a way of finding you, especially when you need it the most.
There's a lot more to Amara than effortless good looks, and if Victoria will allow it, there's a lot more to love, too.
The question is - Does she have the courage to let go of everything she's ever known in the quest of true love? Or should she call it a day, run a nice hot bath and agree with her mum that fairy tales are a load of BS to keep the faint hearted happy?
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
We follow the story of Victoria, beginning with her loveless marriage to her husband of nine years. Sienna is Vici's best friend and therapist (in my opinion, as most best friends are).
This is a solid 3 stars for me, as I had trouble following the story for some parts but that´s partially my fault. I think this book is a version of gossip girl but written with a strong female lead and her journey to find her true love. Swinney’s writing was a refreshing experience but I would´ve enjoyed more character depth. The Other Side of Love brought me laughter and I think it is a must read for anyone who enjoys reading about a journey to find themselves.
Thank you again Matilda for providing me with a copy
I’ve heard people describe this book as ‘Evelyn Hugo meets Gossip Girl’ and although I do like the idea, I find it more of a ‘Modern Love Actually’.
Matilda’s writing immediately got me into the story, making me desperately wanting to read more. The way she describes upper class London makes me want to go to Whispers straight away. And the characters! Although I still have some problems with Marcus (I had them in the first book as well), I loved the others. Each character has flaws but, as the story continues, learn how to deal with them.
Although this book is mainly about finding love, I think many of us would be blessed if we’d find such a good group of friends as Victoria does.
I was gifted this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
THE Other SIDE OF LOVE ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kindle Unlimited and Audible out in June 2023 🥰
“Isn’t love just the whirlwind honeymoon period at the start and that’s it? We pretend to carry on caring and that love lasts forever, but really once the magic’s dead we should all give up and move on.”
I must say, I started reading this and I thought… what the heck is going on, there is affairs happening left, right and centre, everyone seems so materialistic which is just the opposite of me and my world however as you get through the book you see the main female lead Vicki and her best friend have become caught up in this world that means nothing to them, they are seeking more, seeking to be happy and because of that I fell in love with them ♥️ In our modern world I do sometimes feel that love/relationships aren’t viewed as a positive thing anymore, it makes me sad but this book reflects that and it’s beautifully honest.
Her mother!!! Don’t get me started - “Happy ever afters are fairy tales and nothing more." I wanted to jump in the book and say ‘EXCUSE ME, you are her mother!!!’ I would actually love to read a book about Vicki’s mum and dad, from start to finish I think their story would be really great🙌🏽
“Anyone can get worn down after months of being ignored.”
Vicki and Sienna - their lives became addictive for me, I was guessing theories constantly and I was always wrong. I loved their friendship but I wanted to know more about Sienna ♥️ I saw the good in Marcus, I truly believe he was a good guy and I did cheer him and Vicki’s dad on. I can’t wait for Marcus’s story😍
The ending was sweet but if I’m being 100% honest with you all, my heart wanted it to go another way - but that’s just me 💁🏼♀️
Loved it! Solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars, I’ve bought the physical copy to keep on my bookshelf and I’ve also downloaded Matilda’s other book THE Girl WHO JUMPED 😍 I can’t wait to read it 🙇♀️🙇♀️🙇♀️
“Falling in love with XXX had helped me to find a sense of bravery.” - YESSSS!!! Be brave people, fall in love👌🏻
The Other Side of Love by Matilda Swinney is an enemy to lovers stand-alone romcom, pitched to me as a The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets Gossip Girl.
That was all I needed to hear.
The story follows Victoria who lives a glamorous life in London, bound in a loveless marriage. But she wants more out of life. Then she meets Charles and Amara and her attraction to Amara is instant.
I didn’t like Victoria in the beginning, she came across as very materialistic and rude but as her relationship with Amara grew, so did Victoria’s maturity, and I loved how her character had evolved by the end of the story.
This book explores mental health, sexuality and friendships. It has humour, spice, and wit. Although FYI - cheating is a big part of this storyline, so if that, miscommunications, or talks of suicide are not your thing then I’d give this a miss.
Thank you to Matilda Swinney for providing me with an ARC in return for my honest review.
I was gifted this book as an e-ARC in exchange for a review! It was pitched to me as “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets Gossip Girl” and oh my goodness did it live up to that! I’m not usually a big romcom reader but I flew through reading this book because it was just so fun. If you’re a fan of Rachel Green from Friends, you’ll love the main female character, Victoria.
While most of this book felt so lighthearted, fun, and like a refreshing change from the darker fantasy/thriller books I tend to frequently read, what I loved so much about it is that it also had depth. It explores sexuality, families, mental health, and friendship on a deeper level than many romance books do. I really appreciated the LGBTQ+ representation, but do warn readers to avoid if suicide is a trigger.
Overall, definitely recommend! I was sad when I finished; could easily have read more of these characters!
I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review, thank you 🤍
This book was such an easy, mostly lighthearted, fun and surprising read! I don’t normally read romcom, but the very first sentence caught my attention, and I’m so glad it did. I’ve never read a book with dynamics like these between the characters, it was very unique. I found it weird at first, but I loved reading the evolution of their relationships and characters, and it was so nice to read about relationships that work, despite being very untypical. Love all the LGBTQ+ representation, it was such a beautifully entwined story. But the Yacht scenes ended way too fast, they were so fun!
“I’ve spent my whole life looking for Prince Charming.” “But you never found him.” “Because it was a Princess Charming I needed all along.” 😭😭
There were some scenes discussing suicide attempts, and near death experiences, so I would skip it if you get triggered by that, but if that’s not an issue I would definitely recommend. Think it would be perfect for a by the pool summer read!
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! “The other side of love” by Matilda Swinney was one of the first books by an indie author I’ve read. To be honest, I don’t like romances (I’m a fantasy reader, sometimes thrillers or horror, but almost never romance), so I wasn’t sure if I would like the book. But since it’s a romcom (so not only romance) I gave it a try.
And I’m glad I did!
The characters weren’t really likeable at the beginning, but they changed a lot throughout the book. For example at first I thought the main character to be a bit flat, but then I learned more and more about her true feelings and thoughts which made her more authentic.
A reason why I usually don’t read romances is that most of the time the relationship of the MC and the love interest is too rushed and therefore unconvincing. In The other side of love the first kiss doesn’t take that long to happen either, but it still felt different, because it was rather impulsive and afterwards they weren’t suddenly madly in love with each other.
The book also deals with important topics like homosexuality and anxiety which I didn’t expect when I started reading (the anxiety part). But it becomes a major part of the MC which, again, made her more authentic and likeable.
I was very glad that at the end there wasn’t that typical drama caused by miscommunication. I was really surprised by the turn of events (which I think is very good), but I still have to criticize it a bit: The drama was solved too fast in my opinion. It happened, I was shocked, and then it was already over.
Overall, I enjoyed The other side of love despite the fact that I usually don’t read romances. If you like romance and romcoms, I think you should definitely read The other side of love!
I received this book as an e-arc, thank you very much Matilda!
I enjoyed this book overall, despite the fact that i am not the biggest fan of the cheating trope. I am, however, a fan of the enemies to lovers trope. At the beginning, I was not the biggest fan of the main character Victoria, but I think she had a really good character development by the end of the story. I also loved her relationship with her best friend Sienna because you could tell they really cared for each other, despite them getting on each others nerves sometimes.
I love how this book revolved around all these different characters finding themselves and growing close as a group of friends. Especially after Charles attempted suicide and Amara got hit by that car.
I struggled to get into it in the beginning, but once i got passed that it was an interesting read. I enjoyed the LGBTQ+ representation, especially given that I have never read a w/w book before!
There were some plot twists that I definitely did not see coming, which keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Some of my favorite characters by the end were Desmond the dog, Victoria's dad, and Todd. Her relationship with her brother was really sweet, I loved how close they were and that they would also meet up to spend some time together! I loved how her relationship with Amara progressed and I was happy when they finally got together. I just wish she left Marcus sooner than she did.
I would also love to learn more about Brian and Marcus.
Overall, I enjoyed this book but i took some stars away because of the cheating trope and I found that at the beginning it was a little bit slow paced.

Victoria's relationship is dead in the water. She and her long time fiance Marcus are caught in a cycle of cheating and lies. Victoria has completely written off love. Then on a standard night out, she meets someone who is frustrating, stuck up, and absolutely beautiful. This new relationship makes Victoria's life take turns that she never expected, and she will have to come to terms with herself and her old relationship to embrace the love she never knew she needed.
This book was unashamedly human. The characters are all a bit messy. Our main character Victoria is anxious, dramatic, and a clean freak. One bit that I appreciated was the inclusion of how Victoria struggled and dealt with ovarian endometriomas, I haven’t seen that in a novel before.
The main relationship in the novel itself was very back and forth. The cast of characters is well done, they come alive very vividly. This book was emotionally rich, as Victoria dealt with leaving all she knows to embrace all she needs. The chapters are short, and the resolution was decently satisfying, though I wished for a lot more conversation between her and Marcus.
While it was advertised as an enemies to lovers, I would peg this as more of a cheeky friends to lovers with some tense moments; they don’t stay “enemies” very long, and it definitely leans more into the “romance” part of “steamy romance.”
This book does include mention of homophobia, talk of suicide, and a suicide attempt.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I think I would have loved this book if it weren’t for the cheating trope - which is what the entire plot is based on.
Victoria, our MC, is stuck in a loveless engagement, staying only for the financial and emotional security. She’s introduced as living a glamorous lifestyle in London, flirting with rich men to be gifted all sorts of designer presents. One night at her regular bar, she meets Charles and Amara. She’s immediately struck by Amara’s rudeness but has an undeniable attraction to her.
Victoria and Amara’s relationship quickly grows throughout the story and with that, Victoria’s development as a character. I loved how her maturity grew throughout the story and she was able to channel her blunt, bad ass-ness into honesty.
I adored the setting for this book and it was so interesting to read about the glamours of the mega-rich living in London, it definitely reminded me of Gossip Girl (which the book was marketed as). I could have easily been swept up into this world if it weren’t for the nagging thought in my head that Victoria and Amara’s relationship was built entirely on a lie (and let’s face it, most of the other supporting characters were too).
The LGBTQ+ representation in this book was outstanding and I commend the author on that, it’s just the cheating trope I can’t get over! If that is a trope that doesn’t bother you, by all means this is a good book for you.
Thank you to Matilda Swinney for the ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
I read this as an Arc! Thank you so much Matilda for it!
First off, I really enjoyed reading this book! It was described to me as a mix of Gossip Girl & 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, while I haven’t seen or read those, I was sold since I’ve heard so many good things about them!
I enjoyed following along on the whirlpool of a journey between Victoria and the love ones around her. Everyone had their own secrets and truths and when everyone came clean, it was like a wind of fresh air. I really love reading books where the characters are all so close by the end!
Matilda Swinney was able to capture so much love between characters even when going through a lot of change and it was beautiful!
Side note: I WOULD DIE FOR HER father!!! He was the sweetest man ever!!
The only reason for the 1 less star was because I’m not a fan of cheating tropes and this book was pretty much everyone cheating on each other whether they knew about it or not. I didn’t understand why she was still with Marcus when she was clearly so into Amara, there relationship should’ve been over and done with long ago. I LOVED Amara but I do kinda wish Vicky would stay with Marcus but I’m happy with her ending! I wish we would have seen more of Marcus and why he was gone so much but I can’t wait to read more of his book!

I was gifted an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you ❤️
At first, I didnt love Victoria. You know, in movies, the characters who wants her nails to be perfect all the time, have all the best clothes, flirts with everyone who has money and doesn't work to live her life. This is her. The meanest girl in the movie. But, I kept going because, the writing is so good and gosh I'm so happy I did because it doens't disappoint !
Victoria is so much more and I loved reading about her journey of finding herself and finding real true love. The dynamics between the differents characters were really unique and untypical. I never read something like that.
This book is the definition of I am so much more than what you see.
" I no longer wondered what the point of everything was while aimlessly buying bags and shoes in Haddles to fill the gap in my heart. [...] Amara had amplified every wonderful part of me and make each trait that was once a weakness into a strength. Life was complete with her".
I recommend this book to everyone who wants to read something they haven't read before. If you get triggered by suicide attempts and near death experience, I would skip thought.
I was given this book as an e-arc to read and give an honest review. This book is a great example of the seven husbands of evelyn hugo meets gossip girl. If you like drama, lgbtqai+, romance and a little bit of spice. I recommend this book. I give this book a 4,5 stars because you will laugh, cry and you wont be able to put the book down. I genuinely loved this book. The main character is a strong female. She is rude at first but when she meets the love of her life, she turns soft and is more positive.
The quote that I loved the most was;
“I’ve spent my whole life looking for a Prince Charming” “But you never found him.” “Because it was Princess Charming I needed all along.”😭
There are some parts that suicide is mentioned and near death experiences so I would skip that if you get triggered by it. But overall it is a great story. It is a perfect summer read! I need to know more about her and what happens next.

This is a really cute and fun rom com, I didn't like victoria at first she was rude and closed off, she has been married for 9 years and they more tolerate each other than have an actual partnership but as we get into her story she is in the process of her life massively changing as she is exploring her sexuality and developing her relationships with friends and family. Victoria is a strong female lead but as she falls in love we see her soften and become vulnerable with her emotions. She grew so much I absolutely loved her dad, I loved him telling her "other peoples messes are not your fault, especially not your parents" he was such a sweetheart. Its a sweet and fun read it does have some big issues in it like cheating and suicide but they are handled well and the side characters are all amazing.
A first I wasn’t quite sure about this book because I found the main character wicked annoying and rude but as the book went on I totally got into it. I was fully invested in the story and literally couldn’t put it down. I love how Victorias character developed. I don’t usually really a lot of books like this but found myself really enjoying it. It’s listed as a rom com but I probably would just class it as a regular romance in my opinion. I would definitely recommend this book. It’s full of ups and downs and shows that having money isn’t always everything. No matter how much money you have everyone has the same problem to an extent. I can’t wait to read Marcus point of view in the next book!! I will be waiting!!! I would also like to thank Matilda Swinnney for giving me a free copy of her book. I can’t thank you enough.
First I didn‘t like Victoria, because she is the definition of a spoiled and rude person who is so far away from a normal life. But I realized that there is so much more to her character and following her character development and growth were amazing. She was so unhappy with her life, but comfortable in her misery at the same time. But she stepped out of her comfort zone, risked things with being vulnerable and finally found her happy ending. Because fairy tales do not just find you, you have to risk things too. And I really liked that message! Some parts, especially towards the end, made me quite emotional. However, for some of the side characters I would have liked to get to know them better, their description was not deep enough for me.
I found this book to be somewhat of a translation of Made in Chelsea. You’re focusing in on a group of Londons upper class, reading about their Pilates classes and their shopping trips for Jimmy Choos.
To begin with, I throughly disliked the main character, Victoria, however, as the story progresses and we get to learn more about her and watch her relationships with others develop, you begin to start rooting for her and her happy ending.
I adore the LGBTQIA+ representation in this story, as well as the depiction of the nightlife that often comes with this.
This is a fantastic summer read, and would recommend for someone looking for a LGBT slow burn/rom com type romance!
I was sent this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review. Thanks!!
The author describes this as 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets Gossip Girl. I haven’t read or seen either, so I approached this book pretty blind. I was very pleasantly surprised!
This is the wealthy getting up to mischief and having a good time. But there’s no villains so you’re having a good time with them. Our lead, Victoria, has her life turned upside down when she and her best friend meet Charles and Amara out at their favourite club one night. A steamy, slow burn, enemies to lovers romance with great queer representation.
I recommend this to lovers of rom coms who are looking for a twist on the trope.
4⭐️ Matilda offered me my very first arc and once she told me it was ‘Evelyn Hugo meets Gossip Girl’ I couldn’t say no!
I honeslty felt like I was watching an episode of gossip girl as I was hooked from the very beginning. The only thing I wasn’t a massive fan of was the cheating trope but the more I read I felt as though that made the characters more relatable for some people.
It was such a fun and sweet read that does deal with some big issues such as suicide. However, the spice 🌶️ in this book - *chefs kiss*
Matilda’s writing was so captivating and I cant wait to see what she writes in the future.❤️
I enjoyed the build up of this, there are a good group of individuals in this that make up the big picture. I love Amara, her presence can be felt through the pages. Her connection with her husband dwindles but a new bond is made.
This book took a while to finish but that's because of life, nothing to do with the storyline. It's a tale of love, loss happiness, found family and making new connections. Some marriages last, some don't, some people are meant to be together, some not. Life can be full of change and this is about not settling for the mundane if it doesn't make you happy. We get one life, do what makes you happy!
This book was wonderful. I found the main character to be a little frustrating at times. But not in an overwhelming way. In a reasonable, perfectly human given the circumstances of her life completely changing around her, type of way. It was a great story of love, family and finding your true self. Where Victoria’s 9 year relationship was ending and she found love in an unlikely person. I would recommend it to anyone that loves romantic comedies. I do not typically like them but I enjoyed this book.
I'm basing this story solely on how I rate all my other reads.
The Other Side of Love was a definite 4 star! Possibly even a 4.5/5 ⭐ And a 4-4.5/5 for the spice! 🌶
This story follows the love life of main character Victoria. She has been engaged and extremely unhappy for fiancé Marcus. Victoria has wholeheartedly lost the idea of true love existing. That is, until Victoria and her friend Sienna run into Charles and his wife Amara at a local club!
i was kindly gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
i’ve never ventured into romcoms before, but i think this book has changed that! i genuinely struggled putting this down and i was hooked! it had a good amount of smut without it being overbearing, and i loved the LGBTQIA+ representation.
honestly, i’m no english teacher when it comes to the analysis of books, but i rate books on whether i just liked to read them or not, and i liked reading this. i have no doubt that i’ll re read it a few times either! very excited for the next book!
This book is different than the books I typically read. I don't like to research a book before starting it, so sometimes you get things you don't expect. Because it is different, I almost stopped reading. Then I thought about it. Do I like this book so far? Yes. Do I want to know where it is going to go? Am I invested in the outcome of these characters? Yes. So, why would I stop reading? Good news! I didn't! This read is very enjoyable. The characters are complex and not nearly as simple as they would want you to think they are.
LOVED this book I thought the story was amazing and loved how all the characters connected to one another in so many different ways. I think it was a heartwarming story about how sometimes love changes and that’s not always a negative thing but something that needs to be done to be able to grow and live a happier life. Also, loved that there were a couple plot twist that I did not see coming. Highly recommended to anyone who’s looking for a new rom-com.
Absolutely loved this book, could not put it down!! Mixture of seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo, gossip girl and sex and the city!!!!! All my favourites. The light heartdness does not swipe over the heavier taboo subjects without bringing the story down! The characters in the story are quite relatable and their lives are not totally unattainable to everyone! There is normality within the fiction! Cannot wait to read the next one!!!! Brilliantly written and a favourite for my shelf!!!!!
WOW!! This book absolutely blew me away. This is the first rom-com i’ve ever read and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt like i was reading a grown up version of gossip girl. Victoria was such an unlikeable character in the beginning but halfway through the book i found myself caring & rooting for her. Absolutely loved all the LGBTQ+ rep! This was truly such a beautiful story and who doesn’t love a happy ending!! Will 100% be reading more from this author.
This book was really easy to get into. I like the dynamic that certain characters have with one another and Victoria trying to get her happily ever after. I felt like I was really getting to see the characters be their true selves at the end, I felt the ending came too soon only because by that stage I was so invested!! Love the book and would recommend to others. Can’t wait to see what the author Matilda brings out in the future 😊
