At some point during my elementary school years I was read this book and for some reason the story stayed with me. Although, honestly... I couldn't remember anything about the book except that it was about a porcupine, or maybe a hedgehog, and that I loved it :)
Well, I finally found it! Yay!
Except now I'm left wondering why this story stayed with me for over 20ish years... I mean, it's not awful. It's just... hmmm...
I just can't figure out why I loved it as much as I remember loving it.

I read a German translated version in order to practice my German. The story was ok, a bit predictable. But since it's a kid's story, I guess it needs to be simple.

This is a nice children's book. It's about a porcupine who tries to save others from being killed on the highway. It takes a couple of tries for him to succeed. He teaches himself to walk upright and dresses in a floppy hat and coat. People assume he's a little old man. If you want to get technical with it, you could discuss some social and political issues. But for me it was just a cute story.

Why do porcupines cross the road only to die? This is the consternation
of losing his relatives and friends for Hugh Pine. He tries in many
ways to help his own kind. It's a horrible frustration to try to save
others from themselves.
Hugh is a hero and kids love this book. I loved standing in front of
the class and drawing Hugh on a paper and easel while they read.
