Detective Boone Drake has just masterminded the most massive sting in Chicago history, bringing down the heads of not only the biggest street gangs in the city but also the old crime syndicate. The story is the biggest in decades, and the Chicago Police Department must protect the key witness at all costs. Despite top secret plans to transfer the witness ahead of his testimony before the grand jury, an attempt is made on his life. And the person suspected of leaking this information may be one of the CPD's own.

The Betrayal by Jerry B. Jenkins is the second book in the Precinct 11 series. It was an interesting book that was filled with suspense, deception, and the loyalty of friends. I did not read the first book, the Brotherhood, but the Betrayal's plot line seems to follow immediately after where the first novel ends. The plot line was exciting and filled with mystery. I was captivated by the book and read it in one sitting. I quickly figured out who was the betrayer in this novel, but the suspense in this book was still phenomenal. Throughout the entire novel I had no idea who was working with the main antagonist or how everything would be resolved in the novel. The tone of the plot line of the novel varied nicely, and there was a good mix of slower, more reflective moments and action packed scenes throughout the novel. The book followed the perspective of Boone Drake and gave the reader a good idea about what he was thinking during the novel.
The characters in The Betrayal were excellently developed and very realistic. Boone Drake was a very flawed character, but he did experience considerable growth in the novel. I did not read the first book in the Precinct 11 series, but I gathered from this novel that his relationship with God had already grown significantly from the events that had happened previously. His character had many admirable qualities, such as, loyalty to those he loved and incredible perseverance and honesty. His boss, Jack, was a great character as well. He was an unbeliever, but I enjoyed seeing his steps toward discovering the power of God's love. His interactions with Boone were hilarious and definitely my favorite part of the book. They had a really awesome friendship and camaraderie. Not only were the main characters developed well, but I thought that all of the supporting character were very dynamic as well. They all had unique and varying personalities that added a lot of flavor to the book.
Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, and I would highly recommend the Precinct 11 series by Jerry B. Jenkins to anyone who likes a good ol' mystery and detective work. I would suggest starting with the Brotherhood before this book, however, just so more of the connecting plot lines are clear.
Hm. Even less of a fan of this one than I was of part 1. I have no idea what my problem is with these books. A lot of people love them. I just wasn't feeling it. Still seemed a bit fake to me. And I really really really don't like the character of Haeley. I'm sorry. She just rubs me the wrong way and irritates me.
The 2nd installment of Jenkins Precinct 11 trilogy picks up where the first left off. Boone Drake is hospitalized after being shot in the line of duty.
Now who is behind the cover-up and set-up of now girlfriend Hayley. Who has it out for Boone and going after Hayley to set her up?
Boone works with former partner and now boss Jack Keller and few other trusted to get it solved before Hayley ends up back in jail, or his protectee and gang turncoat from book 1 is killed.
High stakes take place over a few days before Boone has to go under surgery for shoulder reconstruction surgery.
Boone Drake is awesome in this series. The book makes you want to keep reading so that can see what unravels. Good Christian fiction. And the corruption in the police department is riveting.
Love how this novel ties picks up directly with the first book ends. Very gripping and kept me wanting to read. Looking forward to reading the last book of the trilogy
Crime, fear, secrets, love, betrayal, and faith all come together in this new thriller by Jerry B. Jenkins. Detective Boone Drake is part of a special task force protecting a former crime boss. He is going to provide the evidence to take down a large crime organization, but while secretly moving Pascual Candelario, someone attempts an assassination. Boone, unfortunately, takes a bullet to the shoulder, setting up a whodunit with lots of pieces and clues. It had to be an inside job, but after Haeley is arrested and evidence mounts, Boone knows he has to find out who is responsible. Who can he trust? Is it someone he has worked with; someone on the police force who is supposed to have his back? Is it the woman he loves? Or, could there be someone else? The twists and turns will keep you guessing and pushing for Boone to find answers.
Jerry Jenkins has another hit on his hands! I had a hard time putting this book down. It will make a great gift for anyone who loves a good suspense novel and might make an interesting book club choice. There is plenty to talk about. Many thanks to Tyndale House Publishers who furnished me with a copy of this book.
Even better than the first one! And that is something I very rarely say! Great twists and plot turns. Sometimes makes you want to pause and double check that you aren't secretly dirty also!! This was quite a deep and long running conspiracy. The one part that was unbelievable was the shoulder surgery, walking out, doing all he did and how much meds he took (the kinds listed) and was still able to function and go hours and hours without sleep while out running around! I have had 13 major surgeries, I've been up hiking a two day 32 mile Alaskan mountain lake trail with a 30 lb pack months after a hysterectomy. But, three days later with bullet frag and bone chips and still needing surgery?? Doubtful.
I am a sucker for detective books and i usually love it when I find a Christian one. This novel was part two but I hadn't read the first book. It didn't seem to be a problem. The plot was simple enough, who had betrayed Boone Drake that almost cost his life, and the life of someone who had important information? I did want to find out. But I was surprised at how I didn't enjoy the writing as much as I had hoped. I am used to crisp writing, where everything contributes to the main story. So I was exasperated at times. I know there is character development needed but other scenes seemed superfluous. For example one scene in particular involved people saying that they had to get down to facts quick and had no time to waste. But the talking, back and forth, about how they had no time to waste, wasted so much time and was frustrating.
I did try to read quickly so I am sure I missed a lot because there were phrases and comments that I didn't understand. Like when a character makes a statement about how well he sleeps, "Like a baby, and don't go for the old joke, Jack". I didn't want to take time to figure out the "old joke" since it wasn't relevant to the story so I kept pushing through. There was one description that I just couldn't figure out. A character was referred looking like a "fire hydrant". In what way? Red? Had lots of power? It was explained that, "She wasn't more than 5 feet tall but weighed more than two hundred pounds. " Neither of those sound like a fire hydrant. If she was stocky there might be a better way to say it.
I probably would have liked it better as an audiobook or a movie, but as a book I struggled at times with the conversations. Things that people said didn't seem in character. And some conversations were a bit too blunt. For example, Boone is a Christian and found out that his police partner's live-in girlfriend was a Christian. So the conversations gets awkward when at the breakfast table the girlfriend bows her head to pray. Margaret sees his shocked response and she replies, "You're wondering how a Christian girl grows up to live in sin...C'mon, you're curious." Yes, we are all kind of curious. It works itself out later but these kinds of interjected scenes interrupted the flow of the story and were a bit shocking, to say the least.
I needed some light reading as I did a lot of traveling recently, for that this book worked fine.
I liked it more than I thought I would. This is my first foray into the Christian Fiction Mystery Genre and I didn't have high hopes, but the story was engaging and, for the most part, the character were interesting (although I found Boone and girlfriend Hailey to be a bit "preachy", which I find offputting). There were some things I rolled my eyes at (superman Boone solving a crime just after getting shot, is a bit of a stretch and I am not on board with consenting adults waiting for marriage thing, but that's just me). Considering it is the middle of the series and I wasn't lost, I thought the writing was good and it kept me engaged. Johnny Heller was the narrator and I thought he did a good job.
Crime, secrets, and suspense make up this riveting action-packed thriller. It features Boone Drake, a young up and rising detective with the Chicago PD. The book is a very good Christian thriller. Boone is a noble character and a decent, relatable Christian protagonist. He deals with dirty cops, crime bosses, and other things, but still prays and acts like a Christian growing in his faith. It is a very good thriller with elements of a police procedural. If you like a good thriller that that has Christian themes but is still a good page turner.
This is a classic mystery / thriller / police procedural with a Christian viewpoint, the best of several genres from my viewpoint. I cannot improve on the plot summary given above.
(There were a few editing oversights in the Kindle text: Page 83, regardless what happens to her / regardless OF what happens to her ; 118, Oh, no you don't / Oh NO, you don't ; 190, me and my first wife were newlyweds then too / MY FIRST WIFE AND I were newlyweds then too ; 218, I been a cop a long time / I'VE been a cop a long time ; 238, Boones and me are gonna be / Boones AND I are gonna be .)
I really do like this series, but honestly was disappointed in the lack of spiritual content in this book. In the end of The Brotherhood, Boone was shot while transporting Chicago's biggest gang leader. The thing is that only five people knew about the transporting, that means there's a rat inside. When someone very close to Boone is taken into custody, Boone will do anything he can to save them and figure out who is behind this all. New characters, new love, new trials, new mysteries but still the same loving immutable God!
A great read. Lots of action and several twists and turns. Detective Boone Drake has masterminded a massive sting in Chicago sting and brings down the heads of the biggest street gags in the city and more. The police must protect the main witness at all costs. Someone tries to kill the witness and they begin to suspect someone of leaking the information from inside the CPD's own. Will he be able to find out what is going on and who is behind this?
This was a really hard book for me to get into. I picked this one up at the library because I was waiting for some other book to arrive. The first half of the book I thought was quite verbose and could have been cut drastically. The underlying story was good, but it just seemed choppy to me. I like the main character and his boss, but the others I was struggling to embrace.
I love that she said she’s only talking to the women!
And the officer who explained being able to use tech because he has grandchildren!
Another great storyline & characters from you, Mr. Jerry Jenkins, who I had the honor of meeting years ago with your wife, and your young son, Dallas, at the time. What a family!
I came across this book series through my local library.
I downloaded the audiobook for this (same narrator throughout the entire series). I was more into this book than the first one. I still have the same issues with this book like I did with the first book.
While I liked the plot-line of the book and the action kept it moving, I felt some things were clunky at times. However, it won't stop me from reading more of Jerry Jenkins' works, as I am watching for how he combines faith with his stories.
This is going to be one of those rare reviews of a 2nd book in a series that says it is better than the first book. Since half of the first book covered the back story, this book was fully devoted to an actual mystery, and it was much more developed.
I very much enjoyed this second volume in this series. One of the things that makes a good book is that you care about the characters and this is true for me in this series.
