Josh isn't happy to be starting at a new school. Maybe it's a chance to be somebody--not so easy for a kid who's been pretty average and is overweight besides. But he is pumped when a cool kid asks hims to play ice hockey.
David Patneaude began writing seriously (more or less) in the 1980s. His first novel, SOMEONE WAS WATCHING, was published in 1993. His books have been named to dozens of state young readers' lists and honored by the New York Public Library, the Society of School Librarians International, the Winnetka (Illinois) Public Library's "One Book, Two Villages" program, and the Washington State Public Library. His latest was EPITAPH ROAD, a recent nominee for the Nebraska Golden Sower Book Award. But on June 1, 2018, his newest YA novel, FAST BACKWARD, launches. Check it out! When he's not in a coffee shop writing, or at a school or library or conference discussing writing, or out on the trail thinking about writing, he's home in Woodinville, Washington, with his wife Judy, a middle school librarian.
this book was not great, it was a little slow but i would recommend it to people that are not into trilling books, there was one big issue towards the end, but that was it.
When 6th grader Josh Showalter moves from Seattle to Rathdrum, Idaho, he hopes that his weight problem and lack of athletic talent won't be as big of a problem as it was at his last school. He quickly makes friends with a couple of nice kids, and the school's most popular athlete, Corey, wants Josh to try out for the hockey team. Maybe this school is going to be great. Little does Josh know what sinister plans Corey has in story for him.
If you like books dealing with the difficulties and rewards of relationships and characters who have to decide where their loyalty lies - with the popular bunch or with the person who might need some help or sympathy - then this is a good book for you. Patneaude writes well and you can be sure references to local Pacific Northwest culture or places will be mentioned.
The most important part of this book is character conflict. Two boys from different school got in same school. One is naughty, another one is not. But when he meet him, they would argue. But when they playing together, and they went ice skating with other people. Gradually, they improve their relationship. Even they became best friend. I like the process how they improve their relationship.
#168 I read this book when I was in elementary school and found the boy with Asperger's quite interesting. I have since researched Asperger's and autism after babysitting a boy who has Asperger's. I read this book with him whenever I'm babysitting and even though it's such a low level book I still am enjoying reading it with him again.
Colder than ice was a breath taking story at times. I loved it! It was about how a new kid josh is starting out his first day in his new school. He wants to fit in with the popular kids. The mean and popular kid wants to hang out with josh because his dad is a coach. So they invite him to play hockey at poor rooneys pond and you'll half to read the rest to find out!
A new boy is befriended by both the "cool" kids that increasingly show themselves to be bullies and another set of classmates that are more caring. Besides the bullying aspect, I was also impressed with the depiction of one of the main characters that has Asperger's.
