Abigail Returns: A Novel of Memory, Secrets and Slow Burn Romance

Rate this book
With just over a decade missing to Dissociative Amnesia, and a newly broken heart, Abigail finds herself with no choice but to return to Lochside. The supposedly idyllic home on the Isle of Skye she had fled so dramatically six years before.

And while struggling to find her way in a world she can’t recall, she must battle the conflicts of the present with the shocking secrets she uncovers from her past.

Jamie’s support is invaluable, but how much does he know? Greg is loving and attentive, but does he have an ulterior motive?

Meanwhile, the presence of a stranger on the island shakes Abigail to her very core. With no memory, she can only trust her instincts as she strives to build a life and a future she can call her own.

But Abigail soon discovers the stranger’s trail leads far too close to home.

A riveting novel about new beginnings and second chances.

First off, I have to say that the setting was idyllic. An old cottage on the shore of a loch in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland.
The protagonist, Abigail Sinclair, was a sympathetic character who has faced some tough situations in her twenty-nine years. She has no family now, and cannot remember a whole decade of her life. Years ago, after the trauma that stole her memory, she fled the Isle of Skye and went to London. Now, after a painful betrayal by her boyfriend, she has retreated back to the island of her birth. She has inherited her grandmother's old cottage where she herself grew up. It needs a lot of work, but has potential in spades. Abigail is a novelist, and the quiet and beautiful setting is perfect for her writing.

Her first night on the island sees her meeting up with Jamie Campbell. He remembers her fondly, but she has no memory of him at all - despite the fact that they were once engaged to be married. She does feel drawn to him though and values their budding friendship. Greg, one of the workers who is helping to restore her old cottage is very attractive and she starts going out with him.

Meanwhile, there is a man whom travelled to Skye on the same train that Abigail did. He is acting suspiciously and Abigail has a strong feeling that he means harm...

Torn as to whether she should stay on Skye or sell up and return to London, she dithers until events culminate in danger. Will Abigail's memories return? What caused her amnesia?

Essentially a romance, this novel also has elements of mystery and could be classified romantic suspense. The book held my interest, though I did have some quibbles with some of the plot devices. I look forward to reading the second book in this series "Anna's Promise".

Abigail Returns by Pauline Tait is a quick, enjoyable easy read that’s actually quite a page turner too!

It kept its cards close to its chest and revealed stuff bit by bit. I thought this was done well and at a good pace if a little slowly at first.

I wasn't entirely keen on our main character Abigail, at first, although I did warm to her more throughout the story. I would've perhaps liked there to have been higher stakes. Perhaps a little more sense of danger would've made it a little more exciting and engaging for me (in case you didn't know, I love a bit of action).

I wasn't expecting it to go the way it did, but I quite liked how it surprised me. It was so much more than I was expecting especially when Abigail’s grandfather was introduced into the story – I thought that’s when things got exciting. However, perhaps the stuff relating to the criminal activity could’ve been researched a little more as it was quite vague. I would’ve loved to have more detail about that as I think it would’ve made things really interesting.

The foreshadowing was a little too obvious for me in terms of the American Tourist, but honestly, I just enjoyed the journey of reading it.

I thought the emotions were raw and realistic and I really loved the sense of setting too. In fact, I could’ve read this quite happily all day and just stayed in this world.

I read it in one sitting and found myself really enjoying it too. Recently I've been in a bit of a reading slump and have not quite been enjoying reading as much, but I feel like this has got me back on track. I felt it was the perfect length too.

Overall, I found it a quick, enjoyable easy-read and it was just a pleasure to read throughout.

Thank you, Pauline Tait and Anne (Random Things Tours), for my copy.

This was a quick , easy to read story of love, loss and intrigue set around the missing years in Abigail's memory as she returned to her Grandmother's island home. The story flows easily from Abigail fleeing her life in London to return to the Isle of Skye, which she fled six years previously, leaving everything, including her memory behind.

The sinister plot within the story is developed slowly along with the renovation of her Grandmother's house and her growing unease as to her unknown past; wondering what happened in her missing years and what other people know about them that she doesn't.

As I said this is a quick, engrossing read; I read it in one evening, and it conjures up lovely images of sitting on a jetty looking out to sea with a glass of wine in hand on many occasions. Personally I would have liked the last section of the story to have had more depth to it and to have been developed more, as I felt this section had a lot more potential. However, that could possibly have moved the book into a different genre which isn't the story's intent.

Overall this is a book I would recommend when you have an evening to yourself with a glass of something to enjoy and I am hoping that the next book in The Maran Bay series will be with us in the very near future.

I read this book in one sitting as I really enjoyed and needed to know the end at the same time. We meet Abigail while she is living in London with her boyfriend Darren. Not long afterwards Abigail returns back to Lochside, the place she grow up with her grandmother. Abigail meets Jamie, he's dropping some shopping off, that his mother has put together for her, but why has someone dropped shopping off when nobody knows she's here? After a week of sitting around doing nothing, Abigail decides she needs to do the house up to either keep or sell, she doesn't know what she's going to do at the minute. Jamie, has been there for her, helping her find workmen and taking her to town as she has no transport. Abigail meets Greg, and they start to seeing each other, but who is Greg really?
I loved the storyline and the authors style of writing. There are a few things I didn't expect and few things I thought I knew but I was wrong. Will be reading more of Pauline's books.

My Thoughts: this book would have been a one sitting read for me if work hadn’t have got in the way, so much so that I read on my commute to and from work, which I never do as I rely on lifts and taxis and don’t like to be antisocial but Abigail’s story had me well and truly in its clutches!

Abigail has just recently had her heart broken and with the help of a friend she returns to the Isle of Skye, a place she knows she fled from 6 years ago but with no memory of why and nowhere else to go she’s left with little choice.. her grandma left her the house when she died so at least she still has somewhere to call her own.

She’s left feeling uneasy and not wanting to leave the house when she realises that everyone around her knows who she is, they remember her she can tell by the pitying looks, but thanks to her Dissociative Amnesia she just doesn’t know anyone.

With a little bit of mystery and a little bit of romance this story truly captured my heart, I was more than satisfied with the ending despite not really being ready for it to end 😅

I can’t wait to return to this series for book 2 next year!

Abigail Returns is a stunning debut to the Maren Bay series—a narrative tapestry of second chances, suspenseful secrets and deep emotions.
I have read a lot of excellent books this year, but I have been waiting for ‘the one’- the book that you look forward to going to bed with to find out what happens next. The book that you can’t put down, ‘just one more chapter, I promise…’
This is the book.
I loved it and devoured it in two days on holiday.
I have wanted a cottage on the shores of a loch for a long time, since I first visited the Outer Hebrides, so the setting was just perfect. I felt like I was on the rickety jetty sitting alongside Abigail with the cool air drifting up from the loch.
Pauline Tait’s blend of evocative writing, strong characters, unexpected plot twists and the majestic Scottish backdrop makes this a highly recommended read for lovers of romantic suspense. I can’t wait to dive into the sequel, book two in the Maren Bay series, Anna’s Promise!

This was an unusually quick read as I started reading and then got completely immersed in Abigail's world and couldn't put this down.

I found the very beginning just slightly slow and hard to settle with, I think because I wasn't too keen on Abigail at first. But once we got into the story and Abigail goes home to Skye, things move on at a much better pace.

The storyline was interesting but what grabbed me was the style of writing, bringing lots of emotions into the mix and that really endeared me to Abigail in the end.

The other characters were well written and thought out and I loved how I wasn't really sure who to trust or how things were going to play out in the end.

I loved the setting of this too! I'm always intrigued by small island settings as the communities are always much tighter knit and add that sense of closeness, but creepiness.

A really enjoyable read and I'd be keen to explore other books by this author.

From a serious incident that happened a decade ago, Abigail had dissociative amnesia. After catching her boyfriend cheating on her, he ups and leaves and goes back to her hometown, where it all started.
While trying to find her way, some locals recognise that she is back, but of course, Abigail has absolutely no idea who they are.
Then she meets Greg, and they hit it off quickly. Is Greg truly interested in Abigail, or does he have an ulterior motive.
Things quickly take a sinister turn.

I completely loved this book! I never, in a million years, expected the twist within this story. It was incredible and completely unexpected.
When it came to Jamie, I absolutely adored him, I admired the amount of respect that he had for Abigail and how patient he was.
It was very difficult to put down, I was completely consumed by it.
Well deserved five stars 🌟

This is such an interesting story. I love that it is set in Scotland, especially on an island as beautiful as Skye. I also really enjoyed the authors writing and language style. It flowed so well and truly kept the story interesting and very engaging.
I liked the premise of the story, as it could happen to any of us. What would we do if we lost our memory? Where would we go and how would we interact with people we used to know? It’s such a tricky path to navigate and none of us could really know what we would do. We could still trust our gut though, couldn’t we?
I really liked the characters and the time the author put in to the development of them. It made the story very real and nice to connect with. I also found the flow of the story worked well with the story and the development.
Overall, a brilliant read and one I would likely read again.

This was a short read and it seemed to start off in the vein almost of Agatha Christie, for me.
I’m glad to say the pace got faster, but not nerve wrackingly so, and was a quick enjoyable read.
I live on Skye and I could see the places described without any romanticism, which was lovely. It took a bit of time to warm to Abigail as she felt like an unreliable narrator, right from the beginning. It’s cleverly written and I enjoyed the story of second chances and almost a coming of age in an adult way after Abigail moves ahead with her life.
A well written story to enjoy in an afternoon.
With thanks to Anne Cater, and the author for the advanced reading copy of this book.

A Beautiful and Heartfelt Story of Second Chances

Abigail Returns is such a touching and beautifully written story. From the very first chapter, I was pulled into Abigail’s journey her emotions, her strength, and her courage to start over felt so real. The author did an amazing job creating a setting that feels warm and alive, and the characters are layered and relatable. It’s a story about love, healing, and finding your way home that stays with you long after you finish reading.

I truly enjoyed every page and can’t wait to see what comes next in The Maren Bay Series. This book deserves to be read by so many more people it’s heartfelt, genuine, and full of hope.

It was an enjoyable read with lots of twists that kept me interested in the novel. I also loved the descriptions of the landscape, which added depth to the tranquillity of the location.

Returning to the place that holds so many memories forgotten by Abigales amnesia. She finds happiness again, but not before being deceived by the greed and hidden secrets her grandfather took to his grave.

I can't help but wonder if she will completely trust the people around her. Maybe that's for the next novel? 🤔

I ate this book up! I bought this book based in Skye while I was there a few days ago. I love to buy locally based books when travelling. Turns out the location within the isle in this book was where I have just stayed for a week. I love being able to really visualise places and areas in a book, like you can really step inside it. I couldn’t put the book down. Beautifully written. I loved the characters a lot, I really felt emotion towards them and the story kept me captivated. I have just ordered book 2 in this series.

Abigail Returns was a fantastic read - I couldn't put it down!

Leaving London in a hurry, Abigail returns to the Isle of Skye where she grew up.  Here, she starts to make a life for herself, despite the fact that she has a decade missing due to amnesia.

Along the way, she encounters friends old and new whilst struggling to make sense of her life.

A romance as well as a mystery, Abigail Returns is a riveting page turner! Definitely recommended!

Wow, what a book! This plot had me gripped and intrigued the whole time. I felt so sorry for Abigail and what she went through. I loved Jamie and the way he was so patient with Abi, as she had dissociative amnesia. I loved all the twists and turns this book took and how they all added up at the end in an explosive revelation. Really enjoyed this one and recommend giving it a read.

Saw this book on a shelf when on Isle of Skye last summer so filed it away for a future read, it was decent - little confusing at the beginning as you don’t realize something about the character until a bit later. One of the plot features though would not be much of an issue in the U.S. I did love the descriptions of Skye.

‘Abigail Returns’ by Pauline Tait is an engrossing thriller set in the Isle of Skye. We follow the main character Abigail as she attempts to reconcile memories from her childhood after being forced to return to her childhood home. However, with memory loss the proposes a bigger challenge.

The plot twists were twisty and the pages wouldn’t stop turning on this book. While, the novel isn’t the most in depth, the characterisation is so entwined in the plot it creates a very enjoyable novel. Furthermore, the novel takes on multiple POVs allowing the reader better insight into Abigail’s past, which I personally loved.

I absolutely loved this book and I am very glad to have gotten the second in the series.

Thanks to Anne at Random Things Tours for a copy of Abigail Returns in exchange for an honest review.

Abigail Returns is a romantic suspense that follows Abigail Sinclair as she returns back to Lochside on the Isle of Skye, a place she hasn’t been to in six years. But as she returns, she hopes she can piece together her memory as she suffers from dissociative amnesia and has lost ten years of her memory. However, it’s hard to know who to trust and who to open her heart to. Will it be helpful Jamie or loving Greg?

I found this book slow to start, but in general the mystery of what happened to Abigail and her family all those years ago had me hooked. I wanted to find out what caused her dissociative amnesia and whether she would remember the truth about her past. The descriptions of Lochside and the Isle of Skye were utterly breath-taking and made me want to visit the area. While the suspense part of the novel was interesting, I wish more could have been made from the romantic side of the story.

If you love a story filled with love, drama, romance, intrigue, suspense, criminality, twists, turns, surprises, new beginnings, second chances, and a satisfying conclusion. Then Abigail's story is one for you.

I really loved Pauline's style of writing, which made the book enjoyable and easy to read. So much so that I read it in one sitting.

It has a great pace, with an engaging storyline and believable and relatable characters.

The setting of the remote Scottish Highlands. Coupled with Pauline's brilliant imagination and fabulous descriptions. Draws you into a point where you feel like you are there in amongst it all.

A recommended read from me. I look forward to reading more from Pauline.
