If I’m going to put up with a love triangle in a manga, it needs to be something like this. Normally I would use the term ‘frictionless’ as a pejorative, but for this title it’s a reflection of how wonderfully breezy it is.

As I mentioned in my last review for the series, this is Archie and Betty and Veronica, just replace Riverdale with whatever Japanese high school this trio attends. Right down to wondering what the girls see in the guy, precisely.

But, for all that Otaku-kun is a bit of a potato, he’s at least a nice one. He’s awkward, yes, and self-conscious to boot, but he’s not a lech and he also wants to not bore them with his nerding out (not that Amane minds).

That thoughtfulness helps with his baseline persona. Similarly, he at least grows as a person, which puts him far beyond similar characters. It’s nice to see guys learning from friendships and not being awful.

And I like said friendship between the three of them, twisted up as it is with adolescent romance. These are friends and they genuinely enjoy one another’s company, which is very important in selling a story like this (again, this is obvious to say, but so many stories forget it).

The contrast between the girls is well delineated, with the clear romantic lead and the dark horse candidate based on how honest the two of them are with themselves about how they feel at any moment.

Ijichi is the most straightforward member of the cast - she’s become very fond of Takuya and that has translated to romantic interest on her part. The two share the more intimate moments and have the most obvious path towards dating, if it ever goes that way.

Amane remains hamstrung by her borderline tsundere behaviour when it comes to admitting that she’s nerdier than she lets on, yet she and Takuya are way closer than Ijichi and Takuya are because of their shared love of Glittermon. They have very similar tastes, which can count for a lot.

While such differences might be obvious, it still makes for a fun story. Ijichi keeps getting jealous because she can’t relate, but Amane getting all that time with Takuya doesn’t mean anything when she won’t be up front about anything.

And we get a gaggle of new characters that add to the story in some brilliant ways. Amane’s “younger sister” turns out to be her elementary school age next neighbour, Sayu, a straitlaced shogi player who is a real hoot.

Sayu being more mature than any of the high school students is a great laugh and the way she accidentally charms Ijichi’s younger brothers when everyone ends up at the beach is icing on the cake.

And so we go. Ijichi and Takuya have the most obvious romantic story going on and it’s admittedly very charming. Amane spends too much time being her own worst enemy, but she’s also got the ‘cool beauty’ archetype on lock.

Even better, the two girls are both really good friends and the trio have a blast hanging out together too. There’s a sweetness to this that’s very wholesome, even if it doesn’t seem like it can possibly last.

This honestly exceeds its very basic premise by virtue of having solid leads and a frisson of romance. It’s almost gentle compared to some of its peers, but that really works for it. It doesn’t eschew the sexy you’d expect, but it is much more than just a fanservice parade.

4 stars - this is quietly sneaking up my list of ‘stories I read first’ and I’m not mad about it. It’s memorable for all the right reasons.
