I know there is a difference between reading about a place and going to a place and descending from a place and being from a place. When we walked in Taiwan, unlike in Japan, it felt like a land I loved but did not recognize. I did not know what to say without flattening or essentializing. The lands are separated by all that water between. (p.255)
It is easy to probe--to interrogate--to love--the dead because in the end they do not require much of us except that we remember them; how much harder to love the living, who have wounds that we could actually attend. (p.298)Warmly recommended!
