When her aunt who raised her dies, sixteen-year-old Alana goes to live with her uncle on another plantation, the plantation her deceased parents lived on. After months of inquiries, she questions if they're really dead. She sets off to discover the past...her past.
The storyline had a lot of potential. It was hard to keep focused because of all the grammatical errors. I would encourage Mr. Q to get a reputable editor. Also, this story is just not possible. Even for a fictional story. Slaves were not given this amount of privilege. The dialogue between slaves was incorrect too. I only finished the book because I was committed and needed to see how it ended.
I definitely would recommend this book to anyone interested in the slavery Era. At times, I wanted to cry because of the cruel and unfair way that slaves were treated. Other times, I wanted to cheer the characters on, white or black, they made some very bold actions that showed the depth of the morals instilled in them. I am sure glad that I picked this one!
My first time reading this author. Fast pace read. Harsh at time in how the slaves were treated. I read it in three days. Characters had personalities... Knew what they wanted and was able to by pass the laws of slavery. Character s had minds of their own. Freedom was the goal and the were brave to move toward the directions. The out smarter the fox. I will read his next book Rayed 4.5 stars.
Very unexpected story but one of a kind. If only lives could seem less complicated in the name of love. This story is a testament to the words; "We see no color. Only love shines through us." The editor of this book has an eyesight problem yet the descriptions and direction of the book over shadowed all of the written mistakes. Recommended for the great yet unbelievable storyline.
This book was so far out. Slaves did not have wedding with best men etc. They jumped the broom. In the affair with Mimi and Charles he would not have been the romantic partner coming in from the field. He would have been hot, sweaty and smell. Just not a realistic book at all.
I like all the twists and turns in the story. A lot of secrets and suspense. However, please invest in a proofreader. It takes away from the story when wrong words are used - desert instead of desert. There are numerous grammatical errors in the book and can cause confusion to the reader as to what you're trying to say. GREAT ENDING!!
This book was really good. The story was well-written and a nice break from the murder mysteries that I usually read. I came across this book because it was one of the books recommended when I recently joined Kindle Unlimited.
This, I consider one of his best works. The suspense was agonizing, I couldn't wait to go read the next chapter. I always have admired his work. I highly recommend this book. You will love it as I did.
I started this book as I needed to get away from my typical thriller genre for a bit. It was a nice quick read and I really enjoyed the storyline. I don’t usually go for historical pieces but the summary intrigued me. Glad I read it!
This book was an emotional read, It shows the power of love between races at a forbidden time. This book had a different twist of events in the life of young Alana.
This is one of greatest time piece written in regarding slavery time I have read lately and I truly enjoyed how the author carved out the story and in today’s world of troubles this story gives uplifting and hope.
Family, sacrifice, secrets, and love! This story kept you turning page after page! Love is the driving force of all the difficulty decision we make. Love wins!
I loved the twists and turns the author took with the lives of the main characters. The story shows "whites with hearts" during slavery. Love always finds a way!
I loved the ending. Thank you!!! I really enjoyed how The story unfolds. Surprisingly ALL my questions were answered; that doesn’t usually happen when I read.
I found this book to be more fjuff than anything. Although the plot of the book was great, slavery was not depicted to be the way it truly was. This book was way to easy on what slavery actually was.
Nice and entertaining read. The main issue for me were the historical inaccuracies in idioms, semantics, used by enslaved people; the unrealistic behaviours and relationships across racial lines. We know that Black men were lunched just for looking at white women. We know that enslaved people were required to provide paperwork justifications by their owners while travelling outside the plantation. Yet the book does not represent these realities.
