Baron Cranston doesn’t believe in happily-ever-afters. Experience has taught him that love is a risk not worth taking.
Forced to marry another man when she was younger, Abigail didn’t know she was carrying Cranston’s child until after he’d entered military service. Now widowed and out of mourning, she is no longer trapped in a union she never wanted.
When Abigail tells Cranston about his daughter, she doesn’t expect his proposal. But their marriage of convenience could give her the second chance she never dreamed possible. Now she only needs to convince the cynical baron that his heart isn’t as closed off as he believes.
THE BARON’S RETURN is a Regency Historical Romance. It contains the themes of marriage of convenience, second chance, and secret baby.

Thanks to BookSprout for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
This is a relatively short angsty second chance at love historical romance. In the previous book, The Unwilling Viscount, there was allusions to the broken relationship between Lord Cranston and Lady Holbrooke, and that was the central plot to this book.
About 9 years prior, Abigail was a young Society debutante, the daughter of an Earl. She was being courted by the 21 year old Gideon, the current Baron Cranston. They had given each other their hearts and prepared to wed. However, before this happened, Cranston had his heart broken when she broke off with him, and wed a wealthy viscount old enough to be her grandfather. He bought a commission to the army to run away from his heartbreak and vowed never to trust and be vulnerable to a woman again. On his return from the military, he earned a reputation as a rake, wending his way through many a Society widow.
Abigail, now the widowed Lady Holbrooke, is back in Society after mourning, and being isolated in the country since giving birth to her daughter. Despite Gideon's wish to avoid her, they share acquaintances, and when they are forced to confront each other at the Viscount Ashdown's wedding, Abigail takes steps to clear up some lies about the past, despite knowing that Gideon may never forgive her.
When Cranston finds out that she gave birth to his daughter, after marrying Holbrooke, he wants to ensure that he never misses out on any part of his daughter's life again and proposes a marriage of convenience to Abigail, which she accepts, hoping for a chance to at least be a good wife to Cranston, and Cranston hopes for a congenial family life, but is determined to guard his heart and never be vulnerable to Abigail again.
This was angsty with past pain and secrets, and both MCs having suffered heartache and loss, and presenting with current distrust/fear for their hearts. Both Abigail and Gideon went into their second chance relatively open with each other with their expectations, with relatively no intention for manipulative games - it was actually the secondary characters that tried to promote the games to test their relationship. Regardless of their past, they both seemed to want a congenial marriage/family, even while protecting their hearts from further pain in their own ways. What they did not deny was that they were both still very attracted to each other, so the physical relationship was not an issue, but there were a lot of emotional barriers that needed to be overcome to reach the HEA. What I would have liked to have known was what the old Earl's motive was - in his manipulation of the relationships of his children.
After nine years, Abigail finally has a chance to reveal her secret to Gideon, Baron Cranston. He doesn't trust her after she rejected his proposal and married someone else, but she is persistent to talk to him and he gives in. With eyes like his own, he finds out he has a daughter. A second chance romance of a lady who has never stopped loving the man who gave her a daughter and her hope to break the ice surrounding his heart. An emotional love story that moves at a fast pace with a happy ending. Explicit open bedroom. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I received an advance ebook copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for review.
The Baron’s Return by Suzanna Medeiros is the seventh book of the Landing a Lord series. Baron Cranston believes love isn’t worth the risk. After the woman he loved married another, he vowed never to fall in love again. Abigail was forced by her father to marry someone else, but she didn’t know that she was carrying Cranston’s child. Now a widow, Abigail is no longer trapped. She longs to tell Cranston of their child together. When Cranston learns of his daughter, he proposes to Abigail. This marriage of convenience will ensure he is in his daughter’s life. Abigail feels that this is the second chance she needs to convince him that their love is true.
This is a very quick read. The secret baby trope is not one I’ve read much of before, but this story definitely leaves me open to reading more of it. Both Cranston and Abigail were likeable and their actions were understandable on both sides.
This is a well written book with strong characters in Cranston and Abigail. The author does a great job building the story and pulled me in with the second chance at romance. She brings secrets, drama and intrigue, adds in the romance and love and delivers a terrific read.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Regency romance is my favorite romantic subgenre. Part of what I love about it is the play of manners, gentleman-like conduct, and gently bred ladies. While I have enjoyed books by this author in the past, I had several issues with this book, the most serious with the hero. Part of what I demand from my Regency heroes is that they treat their ladies well, even if they struggle with their feelings, their perceptions of their lady’s feelings, or some other internal or external conflict. I did not like this hero because he just did not treat the heroine well for far too long. He takes all manner of what I would call cheap shots… not a heroic action to be sure. Yes, they have a complicated past—more complex than he even knows at the beginning—but the way he treats her is just outsized terrible for what he blames her about in the past. Yes, she did not act well back in the day, but he was unwilling to listen to her or trust her about the truth of it until he found out more information through his own investigation. I honestly felt bad for the heroine, even though she seemed to believe she deserved his ill treatment--and I so dislike when heroines do that!--it was hard to watch her being maltreated, especially after she had suffered for so long at the hands of the cruel older husband she was forced to marry. Frankly, I almost wished she married the new Viscount Holbrook, as he was the only man who treated her well in the last ten years. I'm not a fan whatsoever of profanity or crude language in books, especially historical romance’ I believe should be a cut above that nonsense. To me, it was beyond the pale when the hero actually uses the F-bomb when he tells the heroine part of what he expects from a wife (and yes, he's talking about the activity!). Ugh! She should have slapped his face instead of kissing him! I love the heroine's (and hero’s) 8-year-old daughter. She seemed realistic in her resilience and acceptance of the man she soon found out was her father, as well as her fear of separation. At least the hero treated *her* well.
I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Abigail and Gideon were young and in love. They wanted to marry, but her father had other plans for her and manipulated her into marrying a man older than himself. Brokenhearted, Gideon purchased a commision and headed off to war. Nine years later, she’s a widow and he’s home and jaded about love. After an awkward reconnection, she tells him about his daughter and he flips out and demands she marry him, but it will be a marriage without love. Poor Abigail, she has always been in love with Gideon, but spent years married to a man who abandoned and despised her. Now that she was getting to marry the man of her dreams, he was cool and formal and refused to love her. The characters are wonderful, and the friendships are those one can only dream of. Gemma is a delight; the new Lord Holbrook is insightful and generous; Amelia and Mary are loyal matchmaking romantics; and Ashford and Lowenbrock are Gideon’s true brothers-in-arms. This story will break your heart one minute and inspire you the next. Emotions run high, pride takes its toll, and the ending tees up the next book in the series. Loved it!.

This is my first book from this author and I read it in one sitting. Abigail and Cranston were cruelly separated when they were young. Cranston always blamed Abigail for betraying him never realizing that it was her father who forced her to marry another man. He also never realized that she was carrying his child when they parted ways. Once the widowed Abigail finishes her mourning period, she wishes to make peace with Cranston for the sake of their daughter. Cranston accepts his daughter immediately, but he can't get past the fact that Abigail hurt him terribly. This book is about Abigail's fight to win the heart of the man she never stopped loving. Two couples from past books are featured as the friends of Abigail and Cranston. I especially liked the nephew of Abigail's late husband and how he enjoyed making Cranston jealous. Another standout was little Gemma. She was definitely the apple of her daddy's eye. This book was an enjoyable read even though it made me tear up a few times.

This time it's forever. - Separated in their youth due to her father's greed, Cranston grows bitter against love, marriage, the whole shebang. Abigail vows never to suffer another arranged marriage without love to hold it together. But she will do right by her daughter and ensure Gemma has a father's love, even if Abby missed out on that paternal emotion herself. How can she convince the man who still holds her heart that she is true? How can he trust that she won't hurt him again?
I wanted to cry for Abby practically from page one. Cranston's every word and action were dipped in disdain for the girl who tossed him over for another. Her reasoning is covered by the love she felt so long ago. That she still feels. But his immediate acceptance of his child lets us glimpse that his heart is not the rock he claims it to be. The loving nature of his wife will surely win him over. That and the solace they find in each other's arms. Supportive friends, a sweet angel in little Gemma and all the feels make this a good read.

This is the wonderful book seven in the Landing a Lord Series by Suzanna Medeiros. In the Baron's Return, Abigail and Cranston's story is a rollercoaster of emotions, separated in their youth due to some serious father problems. Cranston's grown bitter about love and marriage, while Abigail is all about breaking free from the chains of arranged loveless unions. But there's one thing they both agree on: they want the best for their darling daughter!
Abigail's determination to give her daughter the fatherly love she never had is nothing short of inspiring, even if it means winning back the man who once held her heart. Can she convince him that her love is true this time? And can Cranston let go of his past hurt and trust her not to break his heart again? I think he can!
This is such a sweet love's second chance novel with a great scandal! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes regency romances!

This is a delightful second chance romance between a widowed Abigail Holbrook and her former love, Gideon Cranston, who has served in the army for the past 9 years. They are reacquainted at his friend’s wedding reception - she’s nervous, he’s aloof. He has not forgotten “that woman’s” refusal of his offer of marriage. Her goal is to tell him a pair of green eyes, just like his, has been greeting her daily for the past 8 years…but not at the reception. He just wants to be polite, and get her out of his system, so he half heartedly agrees to meet her at her home, another time. What will Gideon’s reaction be to her revelation? He has been mistrustful of her all these years. Will Abigail tell him the circumstances of her marrying a 60 year old man of her father’s choosing, rather than marry Gideon? Will he believe her? Read this well written romance. And as it is with other stories, children steal the show…like a green-eyed 8 year old girl named Gemma.
Abigail and Cranston had cared for each other when they were young until her father made sure she would not marry Cranston and instead gave her to a man old enough to be her grandfather. Cranston naturally blamed Abigail for the pain she caused him, even though it was never her fault in any way. Nor was he aware that she carried his child when she was sent away.
When her husband realized the child was not his, he sent her away to one of his lesser holdings and had nothing more to do with her. When the now widowed Abigail has an opportunity, she tries to get Baron Cranston to forgive what happened for the sake of their daughter Gemma. Although he does accept his daughter, because she has his eyes, he does not seem willing to forget that Abigail had hurt him. He is willing to accept a marriage of convenience, but will it ever become a “real” marriage? Can she win back his love? Will he ever trust her again?
Abigail and Gideon were in love when they were young, however her father did not want her to marry Gideon so he pressured her to marry a man old enough be her grandfather. Cranston was devastated and left town. Abigail was pregnant with Gideon’s child when he left. When her husband found out she was pregnant with another man’s child, he was angry and banished her to another home and had nothing to do with her. Years later she is now a widow and Gideon is back so she approaches him to explain what happened. Gideon wants to get know his daughter and agrees to marry Abigail but wants nothing to do with her. Can these two mend their broken hearts and reunite? Oh the angst. I love the angst. I’m always here for the longing and pinning one character or both characters have for each other, it makes the book so good. Loved the book. This is the first book in this series Landing a Lord that I have read but I’m going to go back to read the others.
I have read these tropes before and I have to say that in this story it was so beautifully written. The more I read of the secret baby trope the more I love it. Now, I don’t like when the woman drags it out and never gets the cojones to speak up. In this story, Abigail puts herself out there and confronts Gideon with the news and I absolutely loved his reaction. His acceptance is the beauty of this story. Now, on the other hand, second chance is a favorite trope but I must admit I wanted to sit Gideon down and give him a come to Jesus talk about being so stubborn. Fortunately, I did not have to do that because he does come to his senses. Abigail and Gideon are beautiful people that I guarantee will speak to you and make you have a big grin on your face.
Historical romance. Regency-era England. Book 7 of the Landing a Lord series. The third of the friend group from Book 5 and 6 is a baron who has had his heart broken when a lady cruelly rejects him and marries another. After the heartbreak, Gideon joins the army, becomes a rake, and is distrustful of women. Abigail is finally out of mourning from the much-older husband that her father forced her to marry. With Gideon back in England, she tells him that they have a daughter together, and then he declares that they’ll marry. He’s got no intention of falling in love again, but she’s determined to win him back.

Book: Read the summary, this is what the books is about. I don’t reiterate in my reviews.
genre/troupe: historical/second chance POV/narrative: 3rd person SA / cliffhanger: stand alone but part of a series
Ingredients:
writing quality: 5 stars ease of reading: 5 stars plot: light but fun steam: open door, graphic description
Recommended for: second chance, historical, unknown parenthood
Notes / opinion:
I was glad to read a historical romance that actually portrayed the historical period correctly. I enjoyed the story and although it’s part of a series, never felt I was missing something for not having read the other books in the series. I’d recommend this book as well as read others by this author.
Baron Cranston won't give his heart again—not after the way Abigail broke it by marrying another man. Now a widow, Abigail reveals that Cranston, not her late husband, is her daughter's father. She's shocked when Cranston proposes a marriage of convenience. Can she restore the trust between them?
This is an uplifting story that gives the characters a second chance after the heartbreaking way their young love ended. They both carry a lot of hurt, and Cranston a lot of anger. But he's sweet to his daughter and devoted to being a good father to her. It's an entertaining and heartwarming book.
Thanks, Booksprout, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Abigail and Cranston were young and in love when her father arranged a marriage to man man older than her father. Cranston and Abigail were both crushed but she had no choice and heart broken Cranston signed up for the military. Nine years later he is home from the military and she is widowed with a eight year old daughter named Gemma. She goes to tell him that he has a daughter and he intends to marry Abigail for the sake of his daughter but tells her he will never love her. Loved this romance with some heartbreak but in the end nothing but sweetness.

This book was the kind that snagged my attention almost immediately. I love a second chance romance. Especially when secrets start coming to light. It wasn't a long book and the pace flows along so well you don't realize you are near the end. The characters were well-written and I hope they make an appearance in future books. This book is number seven of a series but can definitely be read alone. The series is worth reading. Warning there are some very steamy parts for those that don't like sex scenes.

A wonderful romantic love story of second chances but in order to find their HEA the truth needs to be told and Gideon needs to forgive.
He loved Abigail years ago but due to her betrayal gave love up, can he give it another chance with her and can he forgive her for the past. He’s found it in his heart to love his daughter but will he admit to his love for Abigail before it’s too late.
A beautifully written story with steamy moments, wonderful characters and new friends!.

Loved reading Gideon and Abigail's story of a thwarted young very much in love couple. Abigail's father is a ruthless man who will do everything he can to tear them apart and ge succeeds with alacrity. 9 years later fate has intervened and Abigail is now a widow and living in London with her daughter. When she decides that she must tell Gideon the truth about why she broke his heart 9 years ago and the secret that she hid his daughter from him. Will he ever forgive her, can he ever open his heart to her again or will Abigail's hopes of requited love be dashed forever.
Short enough for a quick read. This book used the second chance romance trope along with a unique twist on accidental pregnancy, but the author failed to make me feel anything positive for the characters. In fact, I liked the side characters more than the main characters. Gemma, too, was sweet enough but wasn't a very remarkable child.
I would have liked to see some more emotions from both characters, maybe some conversations where they talk out their feelings and get over their past. The love confession and realisations both weren't as effective as they could have been either.
This is a second chance Regency romance between Cranston and Abigail who were in love but were separated by her father so she could enter into an arranged marriage with a much older man. Unbeknownst to Cranston, Abigail was pregnant with his child at the time of the forced wedding. When Abigail becomes a widow she seeks out Cranston to tell him about his daughter Gemma. Their story is filled with angst, mistrust, strong emotions, and twists.

Big disappointment. Way too sexually explicit. Many of these authors, who used to write genuinely erotic and romantic novels, have resorted to pretending their heroines--Regency or Victorian-- are modern day women and girls hungering for freedom and lusting after men. Have you ever read Jane Austen?? or closer to home--Georgette Heyer. If you want to write current romances that are sexually graphic--go ahead--but don't pretend these are historical novels. Mary Balogh, Joan Wolf write beautifully and do not disappoint.
The Baron's Return is a novella-length story in the Landing a Lord series with an unusual story line for a historical romance. It's a refreshing, heart-warming tale of a second chance at love that includes matchmaking friends, a secret child and a marriage of convenience that's anything but, leaving me with a smile on my face.

Great second-chance romance This book is a very good short story. I liked the main characters, Abigail and Gideon, their second-chance romance after many years apart and their heart-breaking resentments. I go through the book captivating with secrets, romance, steamy scenes and HEA. Great page-turner. It was my first book in the series: there is no problem reading it as a standalone book.

Great characters. This was a touching story about a young woman who keeps a secret from the man she loved. Was it the right thing to do at the time she thought so. When fate brought them back together would the truth destroy or bring them back together? It is a very good story full of drama and emotion that hits just the right notes. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.
Abigail crushed Gideon when she broke up with him years ago. Their secret daughter brings them back together, but will he open himself to love and potentially being hurt by her again. Gideon was cruel with the way he would sleep with Abigail but then push her away even after he discovered what her father had done to drive them apart. Abigail thinks she can be content with this but I don’t see how when she still loves him. Gemma was lively child with plenty of love to share.
This was a very charming book about a second chance at love. The male and female lead had a history that seemed difficult to overcome. However, they proved that love conquers all. I enjoyed this book tremendously.

Absolutely lovely! Once I started, there was no way I could stop! Gripping from the beginning, a few hiccups and many fears but a lovely love story! It is great to learn more about the rest of the fantastic characters that we have met and fee in love so far. Counting the days until the next story!
