Have been stuck in Florida for as long as I can remember, and much as I'd love to see snow sometime in the future I'm happy as can be. I'm a Liberal and Progressive, but also well aware that corruption is always inevitable in politics which explains my strong Machiavellian streak. Since I discovered my passions will always lie in the arts a few years back, I've been teaching myself how to draw and am currently training to be a concert pianist and composer.

I've always loved to write, but fan fiction helped me realize my dream career. A bit about my books; The Evanescence Chronicles is a satirical joke (mostly revolving around irony) on modern day paranormal romance. Like Wax Under Flame is a short story that I'm currently developing into a series of novels. The first one is tentatively scheduled to be released in the spring of 2013. A brief warning to all: Though I include these elements with a purpose Like Wax Under Flame is my most violent, dysfunctional, perverse story yet. Even more so than my fan fiction.

My favorite author will always be Matthew Stover, but like the common geek I'm a huge fan of Tolkien, Rowling, George R.R. Martin, and Orson Scott Card. My favorite show is "The Vampire Diaries" (something I never expected, really, REALLY hoping they never jump the shark), and my favorite movie is a balance between Crash(2004) and The Dark Knight.

My cat is lord and master of the universe.

THE MIRROR is the second book in the Evanescence series, and continues right where EVANESCENCE leaves off. Mercedes and Shadow are still have a passionate connection, and while getting to know each other after their ordeal with Xavier, a new threat presents itself to the human realm and seeks to destroy all they know, including the entire race of vampires.

That threat, is Tarasque, the King of Dragons. He and the dragon kings before him, use a mysterious mirror to peer into other realms and watch for any dangers to the dragon world. I've never really read a book dealing with dragons, so this was entirely new to me. I thought it was interesting that in order for him to inhabit the human world, he had to shift into three human bodies to accommodate his massive dragon body. Being able to add entirely new elements (vampire society, following the laws of Duality, etc.) is just one of Pelaez's strong suits.

While I really like this series and will continue to read it, I feel that there were too many POV switches. It was just too compartmentalized for my taste. I would have rather 'seen' some of these through a main characters eyes. I think that if it had been kept to the four main characters ' (Mercedes, Shadow, Tarasque and Blackhole) more of the story could have developed. For example, instead of changing to the perspective of one of the dragon soldiers to give Tarasque a report, I would've liked to have 'heard' it from the kings' vantage point, only because it would help bring out his personality and depth a bit more.

Pelaez did a fantastic job of conveying both the despair of Shadow and Mercedes at being separated, and the struggle of Blackhole and Tarasque between pleasing someone else or doing the right thing. She is currently working on book three, and also a new dystopian project that I am pretty excited about. THE MIRROR is another great story from Alexandra Pelaez.

A good second instalment for the series. The plot I found more interesting than the first and although I don't generally read much fantasy, I think the blending of south american mythology, with vampires, computer hacking and creatures most commonly found in fantasy works well. It's such an interesting twist and the blending of the elements is nicely done.

Character-wise I like Thomas, he was interesting and I liked his examinations of what it is to be human. Brandon and Black Hole are also good. I'm less keen on Mercedes and Shadow, which is probably why I don't connect with the story as much as I might.

The quality of writing is better in this book I think - and I quite like the single POV story-telling from a range of different characters: the author does deliver variety in the voices, which some miss completely in multi POV stories.

I started this straight after Evanescence - wondering where it might go - I'm still interested to see what happens with the story, but I'll probably come back to the series in a few books time.
