The book I read to research this post was Way Of NLP by Joseph O Connor et al which is a very good book which I bought from a local bookstore. NLP or neuro linguistic programming is the study of how others who do things well do things studied in detail and then applying how they do it oneself. This book tends to stick to applying the principles of NLP to your own life and how you can do that in a way that achieves results. There are 4 what they call pillars of wisdom in NLP which are the first is realizing that you want to achieve it here and now, second is knowing what you want to achieve, third is not being afraid of achieving it and what the results of that will be and finally fourth is belief that this is what you want. If you know what you want from life you are already way ahead of most people in achieving it. We often don't realize it but our subconscious is often unsure about what we want and the changes that will bring are right for us so a good thing is having rapport with oneself and knowing that is what you want. This book looks at ways in which you can do that. I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend it. It is also a reasonable length book at around 190 pages and includes a glossary of NLP terms.

This book – just like the title suggests – talks about NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming. I have previously listened to an audio tape by the name of Introducing NLP, by the same authors. I thought I had written about it here, but it looks like I didn’t.

I do not know how to describe NLP properly. It is some sort of a model that describes human psychology, and uses this knowledge to suggest some practical solutions to deal with humans better. How it achieves this claim, I am not sure. To be honest, I find it more theoretical than practical. I wouldn’t say I am a big fan of NLP.

The way I see it is that NLP takes all these psychological theories thought out by so many people before, and put some complex sounding terminology for them, and puts them up for sale.

The idea that we can “model success” is a really nice and noble idea, but does NLP really do that? I couldn’t see it really. Maybe I need to read more about it before I can judge that.

This book and the audio book, however, are much better than things I have previously read about NLP. At least they are not dead boring. They haven’t shown me the magic that is NLP though.
