Illuminating and lucid, this humble book was my first introduction to these marvelous works. Antony Hopkins excells in his descriptions of these pieces, providing a useful summary of each symphony without too much technical jargon.

A great book to start in the 250th birthday year for Beethoven. Maybe not as illuminating as Lockwood’s account of these works, but I found it a great read nonetheless.
