Monsieur Lambert

Rate this book
The fifth book by Jean-Jacques Sempé to be published in English by Phaidon, Monsieur Lambert is a gentle, sophisticated and unmistakably French illustrated story for adults. In this short graphic novel , Sempé shows us a glimpse of life in a small Parisian bistro. The restaurant and its regulars are vividly brought to life in a series of drawings which, together with the handwritten speech bubbles and laconic texts, display Sempé’s usual unerring eye and ear for the telling details of human behaviour.

This simple GN about a group of friends meeting at the same place for lunch everyday is wonderful - the conversations about politics and sports drift around as the menu changes - really wish I had a place like this where 'everybody knows your name'. A real feeling of time and place that makes you understand how quickly time goes by.

A fun read. My favourite line was, "As everyone knows, all life's troubles are caused by women." It made me feel powerful!

This is a sweet little graphic novel by the whimsical writer/illustrator Jean-Jacques Sempe. It follows the day-to-day presence and absence of the titular Monsieur Lambert from his local bistro, which the remaining regulars take as an opportunity to gossip regarding his whereabouts. Lambert, unlike the stuffy locals who populate the bistro everyday, is a romantic figure whose absence prompts the bistro denizens to recall their past lovers and exploits. In classic French fashion, the novel ends without the bistro clients ever really knowing where or what Lambert is up to during his absences. He reappears as mysteriously as he left, only to disappear again. The illustrations, as with everything that Sempe draws in The New Yorker and elsewhere are whimsical representations of the lively figures and locales they depict. Delightful.

Monday through Friday at the same little cafe the same group of men meet for lunch. One group of men discuss politics, one man speed eats and Monsieur Lambert (that's Mr. Lam-burt to us 'muricans) and his friends meet and discuss football (that's soccer to us 'muricans). One day Monsieur Lambert comes late and doesn't eat, one day he does not show. His friends say they don't pry, but those bitches do, as it turns out Monsieur Lambert met a woman.

Day by day, lunch by lunch we learn the trajectory of Monsieur Lambert's relationship as his friends reminisce about their days of man ho'ing it up.

The illustrations are quaint and the story is simple and gentle.

Beautiful book. Sempe captures the feeling of Parisean life so well. It's set in a restaurant in Paris where all the men have their lunch. When Monsieur Lambert stops turning up, all the men wonder what he is up to. He has fallen in love which triggers the other men to reminisce about their past loves. Truly humane, funny and a little sad at the same time!

Monsieur Lambert by Jen-Jacques Sempe - This is a delightful graphic novel from France about a group of men who eat in the same bistro every day. They all know each other and talk about sports, politics, etc. When Monsieur Lambert begins to show up late and even misses some days, he becomes a topic of speculation. It’s a lighthearted story with appealing graphics.

A sort quick droll graphic novel. When Monsieur Lambert begins to arrive late for lunch his friends would never speculate our ask what he has been up to, they would just heavily hint they wanted to know. A light read mocking the gossip and talk of men with Sempe's usual charming pictures. Glad I picked this up today

Completely charming. I love the way Sempe uses fleeting bits of conversation to bring these charming, old French dudes to life. Makes me want to spend the rest of my life having lunch in the same restaurant day after day.
