If you like Nic Cage, or weird horror, or anything in between, this is an absolute must read. Devoured this in a single sitting and was so sad when it ended.
I think my favorite story was Adrienne Clark's "The Night You Met Nicholas Cage" but honestly, the honor could have gone to anyone of these beautiful fever dreams.
This anthology reads like Cage's performances. Some are subtle and emotionally moving. Others are unhinged and insane. But not a single one is boring! Every author in this collection eschewed jokes and outdated pop culture references for something altogether stranger. This was a great read.
His Soul's Still Dancing is a delight. It'll be churlish to write this off as just 'fan fiction' but that's what this is. Brilliantly, passionately written fan fiction.
I'm imagining that this book was torn from within Cage's body like it was an organ that sat right next to his heart. It's pure Cage.
Of course it helps if you have a bit of Cage knowledge as there are some glorious jokes and wordplay based on Cage and his work but I think this anthology will work for anyone looking for a well written, funny, thought provoking, weird, poignant set of stories from an incredibly talented bunch of writers.
Unusually, there were no weak spots. Every story hit it's mark with a couple that I'd claim were my favourite but in all honesty, ask me tomorrow and I'll give you a new favourite. THIS ANTHOLOGY IS THAT GOOD.
I hope Nic Mother fucking Cage gets a copy of this book as I'm sure he'd see it as the ultimate compliment.
This is the essence of weird lit. As expected, this is a celebration of Nicolas Cage in all his chaotic, unpredictable, and legendary glory. Every story in this anthology captures the essence of his filmography—some are emotional and eerie, others are completely unhinged, but not a single one is boring.
I genuinely enjoyed every story, and if you’re a fan of Cage, this is for you. If not… you might be very confused (but honestly, that’s kind of the point). Each story had me saying WTF, and in the best way possible. The range here is insane—there’s surrealism, psychological horror, absurd comedy, and straight-up madness. It’s a fever dream of a book, much like Cage’s best performances.
The stories range from terrible to kind of okay. The bulk of them feel like high school writing assignments with a character renamed, and very few feel like Cage at all.
What a mind-bending and bizarre read this anthology was - Nic would be proud.
As with all anthologies, personal taste may vary but there are some fantastic stories contained within this homage to Nicolas Cage, and for any fans of the man or bizarre (short) fiction, this is a mandatory purchase.
An eclective mix of shorts from multiple authors. From the bizarre to the down right crazy. All the different Nics and his characters mixed in this delightfully dark yet comic bizarrely twisted heap of fun.
