After a terrible accident in the ambulance, EMT Olivia Jordan didn't expect to wake up chained to a bed. The tall dark sexy man holding her prisoner is not what she expected either. But Garrick Blackthorn's not your every day kidnapper, no, there's something extraordinary about him. Something that attracts Olivia. Something dark and secret.
USA TODAY bestselling author, Vivi Anna likes to burn up the pages with her original unique brand of fantasy fiction. Whether it's in ancient Egypt, or in an apocalyptic future, Vivi always writes fast paced action-adventure with strong independent women that can kick some butt, and dark delicious heroes to kill for.
When Vivi isn't writing, you can find her causing a ruckus at downtown bistros, flea markets, or playgrounds. Oh and on twitter at @authorViviAnna.
This book had all my favorite components until about half way through: 1. Crime/mystery. There was a mystery component and it had all the markers of being great until it fell apart. 2. Paranormal. I loved how real the EMT scenes were at the beginning and how the look at the werewolves had a new essence but again even the paranormal part fell apart. 3. Romance. The romance could have been good but at the midway point it fell for all the contrite romantic things that happen in every other romance book and in an old way. Sometimes authors can go the contrite route but they bring it back around and make it new, that did not happen in this novella. 4. Thriller and moments of suspense: they were there but not well done.
I was really liking the book and its characters until the halfway point. Then it all fell apart for me. A good novella, no matter how short, does not leave you annoyed and yearning for the first few pages when you finish.
Overall, I'm glad it was free and I'm disappointed. There was so much potential and then it all fell apart.
If the author could have given her characters reasonable reactions, I would have reviewed this better. The writing felt rushed, the sex very flat and mechanical, there is no emotional involvement between the reader and the characters. At all. Period.
Olivia is an EMT who, on the way to the hospital with a badly injured woman, winds up hitting something in the ambulance she's riding in. The ambulance crashes through a guard rail, goes over the embankment, terrible accident ensues, and when she wakes up, she's chained to a bed in a basement guarded by a werewolf. At this point, the author can't decide whether Olivia should be angry and fight, scared and wheedle for her freedom, and/or desperate and attempt to seduce her way out. So what follows is this schizophrenic jump from one slightly off emotion to the next that left me thinking, if this was a real woman and she wanted to get out of this situation alive, there's no way she'd be acting like this. You don't go out of your way to antagonize the guy who has you chained in his basement. Not if you want to get out alive. And after being this angry and volatile, she falls into bed with her captor with dizzying and unbelievable enthusiasm. There is very little time spent on the sex and it's poorly written. Not even the ending is any good. There is no resolution to the story. One minute the werewolf is telling her she's his mate, and the next he's made leader of the pack and throwing her out 'for her own good'. Huh? This is the end of the story? There's an excerpt at the end for another story, but it's not for part two continuation of this debacle, which at least I'd understand. It for a completely different set of characters.
So in short, you have a good beginning (and the beginning actually was pretty good), a hurried and unbelievable middle, and a virtually non-existent and unsatisfying ending. This is erotica without eroticism. Not even the sex redeemed it.
This book had a lot of potential. I liked how the werewolves were portrayed and the world building seemed interesting enough. The reason it only got three stars was because the story was so rushed. Olivia went from a captive in his basement to lover in three seconds flat. I also absolutely hated how it ended. Thanks, the sex was great but you need to take the truck and get out of here because it isn't going to work between us. Seriously? Thats the end? This was a total WTF moment. I'm so glad I took the time to read other reviews and see that this was a prequel to another series. So my assumption is that basically this was a tease to make readers happy while the author works on a full length novel. Its always tough when you want more than you get. I'm glad this particular book was free on Amazon. To be honest though it served its purpose because now I'm dying to know how it is all going to work out and I am going to go and buy the next book.
“Bad to the Bone” by Vivi Anna is the first story I read from her. And I have to admit that this novella was very good! Fast-paced but very well-written, the story is hot and steamy with fitting characters.
This novella is about Olivia and Garrick. Olivia, after an accident, awakes in an unfamiliar place, hostage to Garrick, a very attractive and sensual werewolf. But from the beginning they both knew that the attraction between them is inevitable. Olivia is a brave woman who is not afraid to do her best to survive. Garrick is the typical alpha male but he’s also strong and protective.
So, good plot and characters. But what I liked most? The end. Not the typical ending in a novella! I realize that this is a prequel for a book and now I’m looking forward to read this book!
If you like novellas with sexy alpha males, then you should read this one!
Olivia: EMT who responds to a call; when she arrives, a woman is on the ground with 3 bullet holes in her chest. She is bleeding out, but it is a silvery substance. The woman keeps trying to get away. The ambulance is then in a bad accident which causes it to flip and go over an embankment. The woman tells her he is coming. Olivia sees a massive shadow appear and then everything goes black.
Garrick: Has Olivia chained downstairs in a cement room in his basement. What to do with her?
Surely I have peaked your interest, so what are you waiting for? Read it!!! One in a series and not a stand alone (big, huge disappointment to this reader)book. Sexually graphic.
Garrett and Olivia have a chemistry that does not relent no matter what! You would think being chained up or beaten by a woman would lessen ones libido. That's not the case with these two. But when Garrett makes a decision that does not include Olivia's involvement what-so-ever. He feels it almost as much as she does.
I enjoyed this short read. It left me wanting for much more and luckily I have the next book waiting for me on my ereader.
Id give it a 3.5 it was good for free. Its a quick easy read but its.doubtful ill read Hungry Like a Wolf. It didn't intrigue.me.that much and the writting had some issues especially the switching of POVs. It could be jilting at times. Grab it while its free. :)
Very quick and easy read. It was a bit of sex in it but I think with this book it does flow together. This book is in third person.
Olivia and Rodger get a call to help out someone who got shot three times in the chest. On the way, to the hospital they crash or something crashes into them for the whole vehicle to flip over. Olivia then wakes up in a room and finds a hot dude. He questions her, and then after that is the sex scene. Then, Olivia get attacked by a wolf and is told to go home. And that is the end, I didn't go into the detail but this is what happens.
I have it 3stars because some of the writing was a bit hard to follow and understand the direction the writer was taking things. It felt rushed. Seems like all of the writing work went into the steamy scenes and left the lead up and backstory adrift and stale. Looking forward to reading the other books in the series to see how the story develops.
I have always loved this author, but.....This trilogy that I have already bought all, is the same characters and why did they not put all 3 together. We all know the reasons. I love werewolves. I love when they are the good guys but the way it ended led me to believe that maybe the Hero is not the hero I would expect. ON to the next one.
It was well written but moved too fast for my liking. I want to get the version with all the parts together since reading stories in chunks annoys me (my problem, not the author’s). Over all, I’d read more by her.
This was a fast paced book, a little to fast past and I didn't really like how it changed completely half way through without any real reason. On minutes it's about one set of characters and the next it was about some different ones with no real link between the two groups or real story flow.
Original title: The Werewolf Liaison: (part one): Billionaires After Dark (**previously titled Bad to the Bone**) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00... Purchase Kindle on December 24, 2011.
A great short story that grabs you from the start. Really need to find out what happens between Olivia and Garrick. This book has been retitled by the author since I have had my copy.
This is another cliffhanger but at least I was prepared this time. I find this a bit on the controversial side and I'm curious where part two will lead.
This was a "D" story at best and I am probably being too generous.
First of all, I will say that I absolutely hate when authors leave cliffhangers to their stories. This was a novella so I should have guessed that it was a prelude for a full-length novel, Hungry Like the Wolf. So we are left to wonder what becomes of Olivia and Garrick. The problem for me when authors do the novella way in advance of the novel is that I forget about or lose interest in wanting to read the novel by the time it comes out. My suggestion to authors is to space it so that the novella comes out no more than a month in advance of the novel.
SPOILERS
Now...with that said, on to Olivia and Garrick. Olivia is a tough EMT who arrives on the scene of incident where she is needed to assist a thrice shot female victim. She is amazed that the woman is still alive and coherent. During her transport to the hospital, the woman starts uttering strange things, to Olivia's ears. Enroute, the ambulance suffers a blow out of some kind that causes it to summersault over an embankment. Note: Ms. Anna never explains what caused the blow out. Was it Garrick, was it a cut in the tire, an run in with another car...what? After the ambulance lands at the bottom of the embankment, the victim -- Sonja, who is on the verge of death says, "the keeper comes." Olivia looks up and sees shaggy hair, sharp fangs, and a clawed hand reaching into the ambulance to grab her and she faints. She wakes up later chained hand and foot to a wall in a non-descript basement. I'll fast forward details but to make a short story even shorter, not much time passes before Olivia is hot for her captor, Garrick. Seriously?!?! You are kidnapped and chained and your panties are getting damp. She had been there less than 24 hours to suffering with Stockholm syndrome.
I guess I wasn't impressed by the pace of the story. Everything seemed to happen way too quickly for my licking. I understand that it was a novella but I would have liked a bit more character development and background. She was kidnapped...she got aroused...he got aroused...they had sex...she was attacked by another wolf...and he sent her away. Literally, it was just that quick.
It seems as if Ms. Anna was in a rush to get to the end of the story to leave the reader at the cliffhanger. A few more words at the beginning and the middle and a bit more story development would have made the book a decent read. For me, reading this novella has had an effect adverse to what the author intended...I'm not at all eager to read Hungry Like the Wolf if this hurried writing style is indicative of what I could expect in the full novel.
For me the best two things about the book were the cover (on Amazon) and the end.
Olivia Jordan was working the night of the accident when she finds out that there are other beings besides humans out there... and who might those other beings be? Werewolves... Garrick Blackthorn is a keeper of secrets. In charge of dealing with the fallout between two werewolf clans, Garrick takes Olivia captive to see if she's seen anything or knows anything about his world. Entranced with each other, Olivia can't help but be attracted to his big, brooding, sexy man and Garrick can't stay away from the stubborn, beautiful Olivia Jordan.
This book is really short.. So, with that being said. I'll keep this review fairly short. Since this is a short read, I thought it was okay. I'm not so sure about the characters, I think there's some promise there, and I do want to know what happens next, seeing as Garrick just took the Alpha title in the end and left me with an empty feeling. I want more.. Need more.. MORE, MORE, MORE!!
Dislikes about this book would have to be the length, of course. There really wasn't enough time. The characters were thrust upon me like, "HERE! TAKE THIS!" Definitely not enough time for character development. Now, what I did like about this book was the story as a whole. I think there's promise and I do find myself wanting to read the next book, probably not right away, but I'll definitely want to find out what's next for Garrick and Olivia.
I would not recommend this book to anyone. I just don't think it's worth the read. But, because this was a free ebook from amazon, I'll say if you want something short and to the point with a sexy werewolf thrown in the mix, then yeah, go for it.
Novellas are tricky in that the author has a limited amount of pages to create a connection between characters and readers. With more pages and a little extra plot, this book would have been very good.
First, let me say I enjoyed Ms Anna's writing style. Voice is important, and that kept me reading. Unfortunately, the characters hit the page and there wasn't enough development for me to really connect to them.
Olivia is an EMT. Cool. A caring, nurturing, possibly hero-type personality. When push comes to shove, she shoves back. So when her character goes from "I'm going to rip this psycho kidnapping killer's eyes out" to "I want to jump his bones" in an abrupt 180...without any explanation why...I hit my first serious disappointing hurdle.
Garrick Blackthorn is an interesting character. He's built and gorgeous and clearly alpha. His preternatural disposition is obvious to anyone that reads the genre. Initially, he's true to his "do the job" attitude. One he never wavers from. But then he does...again, without a real explanation. His inconsistent character responses were the second disappointing hurdle.
Then there's the final conflict, which wasn't bad as far as novellas go. The resolution for Garrick's situation is plausible...but Olivia's reaction is clearly whacked. She's spent one day with Garrick, slept with him a couple of times, and she's prepared to make life-altering decisions immediately. At 40'ish (though she sounded 25'ish) I was shocked by the drastic reaction without any real reason. And that was the third disappointing hurdle.
Will I read the next book in the series? If it's a full-length novel, yes. If it's another novella, I'm not so sure.
This is the deliciously erotic story of Olivia Jordon and Garrick Blackthorn. Olivia and her partner Rodger were transporting a girl that had been shot. Pretty routine. What was not routine is the silver leaking out of the bullet holes. Her last words to Olivia was a terrifying warning that the keeper was coming. Then a crash...Olivia wakes up chained in a basement with no idea what became of the strange girl they were transporting, or her partner Rodger, she is faced with her captor who is none other than the keeper. But as she gets to know him, Olivia's fear turns into an overwhelming desire. Lust that is unnatural. Garrick knows that he is suppose to get rid of anyone who learns what they are. It's his duty to protect the packs and their identities. There is just something about Olivia that calls to him. Can he trust her to keep their secret if he sets her free? .... his wolf wants her. It's becoming increasingly difficult to keep from just taking her.....that is until he realizes her desires echo his own. ...Unfreaking believable lust fest.... Now all Garrick has to do, is find a way to keep Olivia alive. And she's not going to like it.... I enjoyed meeting Garrick and Olivia. Their characters are well developed and the storyline flows well. Never a drop in the action weather it be erotic romancing or the challenge of a fight, it had my attention from start to finish. ( I think a surprise concerning Olivia's roots is in our future) I do recommend this to adults, 18+
This book had a lot of potential. It could have been great. It started off really well. We had something strange happening, two possible witnesses, but one died, so second witness wakes up chained to a wall by a really hot guy. Okay, that could lead to a really great story.
Even the next part where Garrick (the hot man) starts to question Olivia (the witness) at first comes across realistic. Then, within an hour of reading, they are in bed today doing the horizontal limbo. That part was a bit of a stretch for me. Hot or not, nice or not, I don't find it believable that anyone would sleep with someone who kidnapped them and chained them to a wall within hours of them doing so.
Okay, so there is this hot attraction between them. Supernatural and all, I could believe it. She accepted who he was after a panic attack and fearing for her life when he showed himself to her. Believable. Then bam, "take my keys, take my truck, don't come back." What the hell? It all went from "man, I have to have you forever" to "okay, sex was great, but get out of here before I eat you."
It was a promising read, but it could have been a lot better.
I read this as a free read from Amazon & I liked the set up. The character introduction is awesome. I'm an avid reader of the paranormal fiction genre & one of the things I find that keep a lot of stories from being great is the fact that there is such an emotional connection between two people who really know nothing about each other. This story suffers a bit from that...I get animal attraction & lust, totally down for it in fact...but Olivia's response in the end to the situation in this books feels like something that she would be doing at least a few months later from meeting Garrick. So I was a bit taken out of it because of that. This really is a teaser novella...the story continues in Hungry Like the Wolf. As a novella there are lots of things you have to overcome, I'm not sure that the author did in this story. The pacing is jarring, that's the main issue. Having said that, the story has room to grow. Garrick is a decent alpha, Olivia has the potential to be an interesting heroine...I'm just not sure I was hooked enough to actually pick up the full novel.
This short story was just ok. Normal wolf meets girl and undeniable lust plot but a lot of the minor issues bothered me.
There is no time set for the book, but with the technology mentioned the publication date of 2005 sounds right. That would make the heroine 40 years old. No offense to the over 40 crowd but the voice of the heroine did not convey that of a 40 year old, more like a 20 something. There was also she went from thinking I hate you & your psycho to hey i can't leave until we have sex, to I never want to leave. To instantly running away.
And there the story ends. I have read several of these lately. I am getting really upset that authors think this is ok to do. It does not make me want to rush out and buy the next book. It makes me think you don't know how to do a proper story with intro, story, climax and conclusion. This is very basic story writting taught to even elementary school kids. If I don't have faith in your ability to write a whole story I am not interested in more.
If I had to choose one word to describe this book it would be that, YUMMY! and yes, in all caps.
Olivia is an EPT, protecting the world in her own way. Until she shows up for a gun shot victim, who is bleeding very oddly. On the way back to the hospital, something slams into them and throws her for a loop. When she comes to, she is chained against the wall by a very tall, menacing, YUMMY man Garrick. He is so very big and intimidating, but Olivia cannot help but want him, with every fiber in her being.
Garrick, even though he doesn't act it, is having trouble functioning with her anywhere near him. Already right away he decides he cannot kill or even hurt the women that has fallen into his lap(where he likes her).
Over the course of this WAAAAAAY to short book, they discover what they mean to each other, at least on a physical level. ;) But also realize that it goes beyond that. Garrick seems to know more about what is going on than Olivia.
In the end... well, you'll have to read about it to find out! I will definitely be reading the next installment.
Oliva, a spunky and petite EMT responds to what she thinks is a routine shooting but is suddenly caught up in something much bigger. After picking up a patient, who should be dead after three shots to the chest, the ambulance is in an accident on the way back to the hospital. When Oliva wakes up she is chained to a bed and has no clue why or how she got there. Enter Garrick, dark hair and stunning blue eyes, this adonis is more than what he seems. Known as the Keeper of Secrets, Garrick is responsible for keeping the Werewolf clan's war a secret and Oliva is now a liability. Sparks fly between the two and hot steamy sex ensues. They make a connection but is that enough to stay together?
This is the first book in what promises to be a totally hot and seriously yummy series. The sex is beyond hot and Garrick will be on everyones top hotties list. I just wish this wasn't a short novel and I hope the remaining books in the series are much longer. I need a lot more Garrick, without a doubt.
