Eyes Wide Open is a collection of stories that span the lives of four generations in the Landry family. From lost boys to beaver tales and frog legs, each adventure in everyday living is a slice of life served up with smiles and laughter. Even the tough stuff can be worth a chuckle. It's all in how you look at it.
First, a disclaimer that is sure to affect my rating. I'm not much for reading short stories. But I enjoyed the smorgasbord of often hilarious stories Robin Livingston gives us in this volume.
The stories are short, easy to read and full of human interest and humour. In fact, I wondered how so many interesting things could happen to one family. They range from stories of her parents' lives in Northern Ontario, events in her own childhood there, her courtship, her children, and current events in her family in Southern Ontario.
Adventures with creatures: black bears, moose, skunks, porcupines are salted with happenings on rivers and in the bush along with more mundane and modern locations.
Since Livingston goes back and forth between stories from her childhood and stories that take place now, one never gets bored with one period of time. Her imagination keeps us reading and our interest seldom flags.
I am not normally into books about people's lives, but I really enjoyed this read. I can easily relate to the stories shared in this compilation of epic adventures and mishaps.
The author has a real gift for catching the imagination of the reader and taking them on each adventure and experience!
Robin's father, depicted in many of the stories, is very inspirational to me. As an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and adventurer, I have only ever dreamed of adventures like those lived out by this man! He is larger than life and his exploits are every bit as outrageous and daring as those found in fiction!
What astounds me is that even the craziest stories in this book actually happened! That life could be lived with such fullness and ferver is truly wonderful and exciting. This book sparks the inner child in you that dares to think outside the box and to live a life that is limited only by the extent of what the mind can think of!
