Veresaev was born in Tula, where his father was a doctor. After graduating from the Tula gymnasium in 1884, he attended Saint Petersburg University, taking a master's degree in history in 1888. He then enrolled in Derpt University and successfully completed a course in medicine. His first work to appear in print was a collection of poems in 1885. His first short story, The Puzzle, was published in 1887. In 1890 he toured the coal mines of Donetsk with his brother, gathering material for a collection of sketches called The Underground Kingdom, detailing the struggles and hardships of the exploited miners, which he published in 1892.
During the 1890s, Veresaev joined a group known as the Legal Marxists, and he published works in such journals as New Word, Inception and Life. During this period he wrote a cycle of works concerning the intelligentsia’s frame of mind at the turn of the 20th century, including the novella Without a Road (1895), the short story The Craze (1898) and the novella At the Turning Point (1902). He also wrote about the difficult position of the Russian peasantry, such as in the short story Lizar (1899) which was praised by Vladimir Lenin. His short story On a Dead-end Road (1896) and the novella Two Ends (1899–1903) were devoted to the life of the workers.
During the first decade of the 20th century Veresaev was a member of the Sreda (Wednesday) literary group and published his works in Maxim Gorky's Znanie collections. He published his most successful book, the semi-autobiographical Memoirs of a Physician in 1901, in which he sharply criticized the system of Russian medical education. In April 1901 he was dismissed from the hospital where he'd been working because of his political views, and was forbidden to live in Moscow or Saint Petersburg for a period of two years.
In 1904, at the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War, he joined the army as a doctor. He told of his experiences in his book In the War, published in 1906. In this work he showed the heroism of Russian soldiers and officers and, at the same time, the corruption of the tsarist army.
Veresaev also wrote a long critical and philosophical work entitled Vital Life, the first book of which (1910) was devoted to a comparative analysis of Fyodor Dostoevsky (Man Accursed) and Leo Tolstoy (Long Live the Whole World!); the second book, Apollo and Dionysius (1915), was a critique of Friedrich Nietzsche's views. In 1911 Veresaev established the Pisately v Moskve Publishing House which he headed until 1918.
After the 1917 Revolution, which he welcomed, he devoted much of his time to cultural development and education. He also completed his cycle of works about the intelligentsia, including the novels In a Blind Alley (1922- translated into English as The Deadlock) and The Sisters (1933). He published his reminiscences In the Years of My Youth in 1927 and In My Student Years in 1929. He also translated works by ancient Greek and Roman authors, including Homer’s Hymns, Sappho, Archilochus and others. At the end of the 1930s he began to translate the Iliad (published in 1949) and the Odyssey (published in 1953).
For his outstanding achievements in the field of literature Veresaev was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1945. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He died in Moscow in June 1945.

Всё-таки эта книга чересчур злободневна для того, чтобы не потерять значения через сто лет. Написана очень неровно. Для меня наиболее ценны были бы самые дневниковые по характеру записи, с которых собственно всё и начинается; но вскоре автор пускается в длинные разглагольствования на разные околомедицинские темы, лишь изредка вставляя в качестве иллюстрации реальные случаи из своей практики. Ну а на эти околомедицинские темы он пишет практически серию памфлетов: о вивисекции, об экспериментах на людях, о "вырождении" человека в связи с работой медицины (конкретно с этим вообще не согласна), ну и конечно же, об общем социальном неблагополучии врачей и о том, как прямо оно связано с бедностью всего населения (отсюда уже прямой намёк на необходимость классовой борьбы, насколько это возможно в изданной в 1901 году и прошедшей цензуру книге). И вот памфлеты-то, даже те, против которых не поспоришь, сейчас нам уже совсем неинтересны. Те из них, которые не устарели морально, устарели фактически.

Читал скан с ятями, что придало книге интересные оттенки.
Уникальная книга, срез времени, показывающий нелегкую жизнь врачей более 100 лет назад. Мне была интересна описанием медицины тех лет и жизнь врачей. К сожалению, изменилось за это времени очень мало - врачам также плохо платят, врачей также не уважают, и медицина в России также плохо организована.

I expected this book to be close to the myriad of books written by the doctors and telling the days of their life: simply a collection of stories and some morals and advise interspersed. I was wrong. Doctor's Notes are much more than that, this an exquisite and deep journey into the dark of the medical profession, its pains and terrors that were even brighter than now in the time of writing, in the beginning of the XXth century. Veresaev goes over the morality of medical experiments on the patients with or without their consent, mandatory autopsies in the free clinics and their impact on the future decisions of relatives of the people being examined, he looks into the terror of the fact that every doctor has to go through suffering and in the end the corpses of his patients to gain experience and do good for the others later, he laments the precarious condition of the society that makes any attempt of the doctor to help not compatible with the way of living the people should follow in order to survive. It's a rigorous but emotional examination of the path of a doctor and relation between his craft and the essence of being human. From the condition of the young doctors and their absence of any meaningful preparation for what they will see and will have to do to the deep conflict between the good of the whole medical science and the future generations and the immediate need for help of one individual he gets into the essence of hard and burdening questions that haunt medicine.
The edition of the book I've read also includes his polemics with the critics that were pretty vocal once the book came out to see the world. Some of their points stand, but mostly he managed to deflect the remarks of the people who tried to stall the righteous criticism of the condition of the medical science and practice in the day when Veresaev wrote his book and due to his efforts combined with the efforts of the others, this domain of human expertise has change for the better.

Проработав семь лет врачом, Вересаев решил написать книгу о впечатлениях. Ничего в том необычного нет. У склонного к литературной деятельности человека всегда возникает такое желание именно тогда — стоит ему отработать по профильной специальности около шести или восьми лет. Остаётся понять, о чём именно рассказывать. Некоторые писатели-медики предпочитают создавать художественную литературу, не совсем правдиво отображая действительность. Другие начинают излагать мир медицины, который они видели изнутри. И не каждый писатель скажет, будто он способен понимать настоящим образом, не дополняя повествование ощущением радости от им осуществляемой деятельности. На самом деле, медицина — далеко не та профессия, в которой трудятся люди, склонные к состраданию или к необходимости помогать страждущим. Это совсем не так. Тем более всё обстояло иначе в годы начала врачевания непосредственно самого Вересаева. Теперь скорее придёшь в ужас от прежних методов.
Основное — в те времена учебные учреждения выпускали медиков, толком не подготовленных к работе. Они кое-что освоили, совсем не понимая принципов от них требуемого. Будучи студентом, толком скальпель в руках Вересаев не держал, живых людей не оперировал. Начав сразу практикующим специалистом, не умел диагностировать, плохо понимал принципы лечения. И на тот свет он отправлял людей, осознавая совершённые им ошибки. Кому-то такая откровенность покажется кощунственной. Что же с того станется? Может в том кроется суть воздаяния за односторонне возлагаемые на медиков надежды. О чём Вересаев со столь же уверенным тоном рассказывает, когда описывал требование от медицинских работников приходить на помощь. То есть медик должен помогать всегда и безвозмездно. Викентий так и спросит в ставшей привычной манере: почему сантехник не устранит засор, электрик не восстановит электричество, продавец не постоит у прилавка, делая то по доброте душевной, в том числе в ночные часы и выходные.

Закончила читать книгу Вересаева. «Записки врача» - это замечательное произведение с точки зрения литературы и подвиг с точки зрения врача. Подвиг потому, что и сейчас мало кто из врачей с такой честностью говорит о проблемах в медицине вообще и в лечебной деятельности в частности. Услышала об этом произведении в одном из интервью Е.Комаровского. И жалею только об одном — что не прочла эту книгу впервые во время учебы в университете. Евгений Олегович Комаровский совершенно прав — это книга, которую каждый врач должен перечитать несколько раз за свою жизнь. У меня появилось столько мыслей и эмоций в связи с прочитанным, что даже захотелось их для себя записать. И еще возникло желание обсудить все эти сложные и спорные вопросы с коллегами. Мне очень стыдно, что я так мало читала подобной литературы во время учебы. Но, как пишет Вересаев, «заняты мы были с утра до вечера, не было времени читать не только что-либо постороннее, но даже по той же медицине...» Мне кажется, что взамен огромного количества общеобразовательных предметов, типа политологии, социологии, экономики, философии, истории, этики, психологии и т. п., от которых в голове практически ничего не осталось, можно было бы ввести уроки литературы с подборкой серьезных произведений и последующим их обсуждением. Думаю, такое чтение и размышления оказались бы намного полезнее для будущих врачей.

What a great book! I didn't think it wasn't fiction, otherwise I wouldn't have picked it, as I don't enjoy medical stories. But this were the notes of a man who was finishing medical school and later was a beginning doctor. It was so amazing to read his honest view of his profession. Although the book covered Veresaev's work in 1895-1900, most of the mentioned issues and problems are still there. It was refreshing to read that doctors can also be puzzled by illnesses, and mostly they are not even sure what and how to cure. How many times the wrong cure leads to the death of the patient. How ethical this profession is? Is patient-doctor confidentiality needed? How vaccines and meds were tested? How patients or their relatives react to good and bad news, and how it affects the doctor? All this questions were relevant over a 100 years ago and I was surprised while reading that not that much have changed since then.

Читал версию которая содержит полемику автора с рецензентами, теперь понимаю как выглядел эквивалент форумных срачей в начале 20-го века (медленно конечно через газеты и отдельные брошюры, но думаю авторам процесс все равно доставлял).
К перечитыванию - наверно нет.

Rekomenduoju besidomintiems medicinos etika ir progresu. Jis, kaip paaiškėja skaitant knygą, įvyko, bet vis dėlto ne toks ryškus, kaip mes manome.

Первые главы посвящены организации медицинского образования, чем оно в принципе отличается от других и почему так сложно объяснить людям, что учеба - это не просто зазубрил и стал крутым) забавно, что с момента написания этого произведения прошло 100 лет, а проблемы так и остались неизменными…

It is always a pleasure to read the author who can think. Even if it is 120 years old, the book sounds rather relevant to current states.

vairāk nekā simts gadi pagājuši, kopš šīs grāmatas pirmās publicēšanas. un jāsaka, ka tajā izceltās tā laika medicīnas problēmas kaut kādā ziņā ir aktuālas arī mūsdienās. pēc kāda laika noteikti pārlasīšu. vai nav jauks atradums "Otrās elpas" bezmaksas grāmatu plauktos? :)
