Bennis is University Professor and Distinguished Professor of Business Administration and Founding Chairman of The Leadership Institute at the University of Southern California.
“His work at MIT in the 1960s on group behavior foreshadowed -- and helped bring about -- today's headlong plunge into less hierarchical, more democratic and adaptive institutions, private and public,” management expert Tom Peters wrote in 1993 in the foreword to Bennis’ An Invented Life: Reflections on Leadership and Change.
Management expert James O’Toole, in a 2005 issue of Compass, published by Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, claimed that Bennis developed “an interest in a then-nonexistent field that he would ultimately make his own -- leadership -- with the publication of his ‘Revisionist Theory of Leadership’ in Harvard Business Review in 1961.” O’Toole observed that Bennis challenged the prevailing wisdom by showing that humanistic, democratic-style leaders better suited to dealing with the complexity and change that characterize the leadership environment.

كتاب "المجتمع المؤقّت" عبارة عن تمرين ذهني يحاول فيه مؤلّفوا الكتاب التنبّؤ لما سيحدث في المستقبل على ضوء: تسارع وتيرة التغيير في الحياة الإنسانية. التغيير سنّة كونية، وإنّما (تسارع وتيرة) التغيير، فهذا ما يركّز عليه الكتاب.
تسارع وتيرة التغيير في الحياة (بسبب التقنية والرأسمالية والعولمة وغيرها) لها تجليات كثيرة في الحياة الأسرية والمهنية والاجتماعية نراها اليوم أكثر مما مضى:
•الحياة المهنية: ففي الماضي البعيد، تصبح مهارات ومعارف الرجل العامل التي اكتسبها في بداية حياته المهنية بائدة في نهاية حياته المهنية. وفي الماضي القريب تصبح تلك المعارف والمهارات بائدة في منتصف الحياة المهنية. أمّا اليوم: فالعديد من المعارف الحياتية والمهارات تكاد تتبخّر قيمتها حالما يتمكّن منها المرء.
•الوحدة الأسرة: أصبحت معارف الوالدين أقل اتّصالاً بالحاضر أكثر نظرًا لهذا التغيير المتسارع. فالشاب في الثانوية ينبغي أن يخطط لحياته بناءً على معطيات اليوم (الجديدة)، لا على قناعات والديه التي لم تعد ذات صلة بالواقع.
وبهذه المقدّمات يؤسس الكتاب للنتيجة الرئيسة:
وتيرة التغيير في الحياة في تسارع -->بالتالي كثير من تحديات الحياة متجددة وطرق مجابهتها متغيّرة --> الأقدرعلى التغلّب على تحديات اليوم، هو الأكثر استعدادًا على التخلي من الماضي (الأقل تمسكًّا بالقديم)، والأكثر قدرة على تبنّي الجديد.
على ضوء هذه النتيجة يُبحر المؤلف في الآثار المترتّبة على الأسرة والمجتمع والصداقات والفرد فيما لو شجّعنا فكرة "التخلّي". فمثلاً التخلّي في الغالب سيجعل الفرد ينفصل عن الدوائر الاجتماعية وطرق التفكير السائدة ، بل إن التخلّي عن طرق تفكير \ حياة الوالدين سيؤدي إلى فجوة. وفي المقابل الإنسان بفطرته مجبول على أن يكون جزء من منظومة. هذا بالتالي سيخلق نوع من الصراع الداخلي بين رغبته في النجاح، ورغبته أن يكون جزء من منظومة.
الكتاب ممتع بحق لولا لغته الجافة بعض الشيء.
المفاجأة: الكتاب نُشر في الستّينات الميلادية، لكنّي لو لم أقرأ تاريخ النشر، لظننت أنّه نُشر في 2019!
