Julia A. Beck was born in Mountainview, California, USA on 1965. Her father was an aeronautical engineer, and her mother worked as a secretary. She grew up in Austin, Texas, where she attended Lyndon Baines Johnson High School, graduating as valedictorian of her class. She went on to the University of Texas, where she received a bachelor's degree in communications (radio-television-film). Afterward, she worked as a media specialist for a community college, before enrolling in Baylor Law School. Coincidently, her father was attending Baylor and earning his law degree at the same time. She graduated second in her class, and started to work as a lawyer.
She married with Donald "Don" Kenner, and when in 1995, she and her husband , moved from Los Angeles back to her hometown of Austin, she decided to try to focus some of her creative energy. She has always loved making up stories, particularly those with a happy ending, and romance writing was a perfect fit. Though her first manuscript will never see the light of day, her second sold to Harlequin Temptation after placing first in the Tampa Area Romance Authors' Contest. That novel, Nobody Does It Better, was published in February of 2000. Since that first sale, Julie continued writing and publishing, she quit the practice of law to write full time in 2004. She was the winner of Romantic Times' Reviewer's Choice Award for Best Contemporary Paranormal of 2001, the winner of the Reviewers International Organization's award for best romantic suspense of 2004 and best paranormal of 2005, and the winner of the National Readers' Choice Award for best mainstream book of 2005, and was also the two-time RITA finalist, both times for books about strong women. Her novel, Carpe Demon, is in development as a feature film with Warner Brothers and 1492 Pictures.
When she's not writing, she loves spending time with her husband, her two daughters, her cats and with the neighborhood cats who tend to hang around her house. She and her husband also love to travel—whether to small towns in the Texas hill country, or to more distant venues such as Ireland, London, or Paris. I wavered between three and four stars for this; I'm not sure why the lower rating was a factor. Caris is a strong, valiant warrior and loyal family member; Tiberius is a valiant warrior and an ethical keeper of his vows, so they are a well matched couple. I enjoy a lot of fated mates romance, so instalove is not off-putting for me. This is a quick novella, so I understand there is limited space for character development. And yet, something is lacking for me, hence a three and a half star rating rounded up. I'm sincerely baffled!
Midnight is a prequel to Beck's next novel when When Passion Lies and stars the same pair, Caris (Carissa here) and Tiberius.
When Carissa's young brother is kidnapped by a man known to consort with demons, Carrisa just can't understand why her father refused the aid of the dark and dangerous Tiberius. Carissa, who will do anything to save her brother including using her feminine assets, approaches Tiberus to secure his help.
Set way back in old Italy, Caris and Tiberius' connection is quick and there isn't anything too original about this vampire romance short - especially knowing that the pair's story continues in the future and that Caris starts out human here, it isn't too hard to connect the dots to know where the story is going to take us. And since an excerpt of When Passion Lies is included at the end, it is kind of sad to read the teaser for their upcoming book and see that their happily ever after wasn't - at least not yet. Still it did wet my appetite for When Passion Lies, but now the long wait until May begins...

Good story line, and many gripping turns. Hold your interest and makes you want more. 4 stars.
"Midnight" by J.K. Beck. Book 3.5 of The Shadow Keepers series.
I really really enjoyed this novella featuring Tiberius and Carissa (Caris). Both characters have been in the previous books and this story tells us how they met.
Carissa's brother has been kidnapped and her father is refusing help from the one man that is offering to get her brother back. Tiberius is indebted to Carissa's family from a past encounter with her ancester. Carissa is determined to get her brother back so she makes a deal with Tiberius herself offering herself as payment.
The story is very fast paced and to the point with lots of action and great chemistry between Tiberius and Carissa. It's a really great novella to read for background information about these two characters.
It was a good short story, the only problem I had with it was that they professed their love so early. I mean They knew each other a day (if that) and they was like "I love you." That threw me off a bit but other than that it was a really good short story between Caris and Tiberius. If you're planning on reading this series, read this one before When Passion Lies because if you read it afterwards like I did, you'll know what happens already but the short story gives it more detail.
This was a novella explaining Caris and Tiberius relationship before we go into their current messed up lives. It was the story of his turning her and how it all came about. Enjoyable and a nice build up to the next book.
It's too short a story to really have any character development, but that's more a function of the medium than the author, I think. This is the first of this author's work that I've read and I definitely think I'll look for more. I have a feeling she'll do better with a larger canvas.
3.5 stars. Wish there would have been some more drama between Tiberius and Carissa. She accepted him being a vampire rather easily. This was definitely a nice tease before getting into their book.
Not sure what the point of these short shorts is. Interesting enough premise, but no character development - presumably it's in the other books in the series, which my library doesn't carry.
