Growing up is realizing that the Outer Planet Guardians are the coolest. I don't think the anime ever explained why Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn never show up until now, but in the manga it explains that the other guardians protect other places in the Universe while the five guardians of the inner planets protect Earth and Serena. We already know that Pluto protects the Time Gate. But also, unlike the Inner Senshi, Neptune and Uranus seem to know exactly who they are and what they're doing on Earth. But I'm also wondering if it's because of what happened in the 30th century and the fact that they messed with time, so the timeline has been altered.
Also Haruka is such a powerful lesbian, that she makes even Usagi stray. Also, I know it's never said, but Usagi is such an obvious pansexual because she falls in love with just about anyone at a drop of a hat, regardless of their gender presentation.
I'm also really happy because in the last couple of volumes the pacing has really slowed down and we actually get to a nice progression of action and development of the story. It's especially evident in this novel, since it's taking the guardians awhile to figure out the mystery, but also Neptune and Uranus don't just show up, help them beat the bad guys, and become part of the team.
I'd also like to give a huge shout out to my girl Chibi-Usa for conspiring with Diana to get Mamoru and Usagi to make-up (and make out) after they have a bit of an unhappy moment. Though I'm with Mamoru on that one considering that he only ever talked to Michuru and Usagi got kissed by Haruka twice and she hadn't told Mamoru and is even unsure if it's cheating. Usagi, you got the hots for her, yeah that's cheating.
Can't wait to read the next books-- but I gotta wait for them to arrive T_T
So after saving thins last book, here we are to see chibiusa go home and Usagui's life go back to normal, only to find out, they sentchibiusa back to be trained as sailor. New enemy, new story-arc, new sailors, new characters. Good start.
It's going to be a long wait till I can read book 7, that's sad.
Rating: 4.6 leaves out of 5 Characters: 4.5/5 Cover: 4/5 Story: 5/5 Writing: 5/5 Genre: Fantasy/Romance/Shojo Type: Manga Worth?: Yes
WOW! I never thought the day would come when I would rate one of these volumes a 5, but here we are. After that horrendous Vol 5 (should have been burned in the damn trash) this one is LOADS better. This is what I have been hoping for since the beginning. Sailor Moon seems to be growing ( a bit) and when she meets This just... adds on to my affair theory from last book!
Takeuchi's doing a pretty good job including everybody in the adventure, even if there's so darn many of them now. I like the outer senshi a lot. They add mystery and mysticism to the story.
Finally getting to read my fav couple, my lil bad ass lesbians 🥺. Love seeing them be so mysterious and iconic together, stirring the drama pot for Mamoru & Usagi. Both got them encountering jealousy horrendously!!
Also realizing once again how much they left out in the 90’s anime, because I didn’t know chibi-usa knew what the holy grail was (or I don’t remember). But I surely don’t remember them saying Neo Queen Serenity used it for her youth.
When all seems to be quiet and peaceful a new enemy appears that has to do with the Mugen Academy. I definitely loved that the Death Busters are here! And I am also delighted to meet Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Pluto! I am not sure how I felt about Haruka at times, her flirting with Usagi was just a bit too cringy for me giving that Usagi is in a relationship (I feel sorry for Usagi that everyone tries to kiss her without her permission). Plus later on Haruka says: “Stop hanging out along my route home. I might take advantage of you.” Wtff?? That is just a big no in my book. I also get pain in my boobs, as Haruka has (given some images) quite the boobs, but since she generally walks around dresses as a male (and everyone calls her that) she must have strapped in those boobs, ouch. There are some plotholes that had me rolling my eyes. Also you would think that Chibi-Usa knows better than to show her true identities to everyone, but apparently she doesn’t care (and she should just not walk away from things if she has appointments with people). I know that Hotaru is x, but Hotaru doesn’t know that and for now she may not even be Hotaru completely. I did think the friendship between them was sweet. I did think it was hilarious that the girls thought that Uranus and Neptune could be enemies (and even thought one of them was a Tuxedo Mask). There was a lot of excitement and we learn tons of things about our new enemies. I love Witches 5, and their design was fantastic. Though I did think it was hilarious that there was one for each senshi. 😛
Meh. To be honest this took me a long time to read. Each time I picked it up I'd get maybe 10 pages in, become bored and drop it. Then repeated that process for about a year. The problem within those first 10 pages was that it had become apparent things were not going to develop how I'd hoped volume 5 had teased. Deep down I knew volume 6 would not pickup.
In a way I was right to a degree. After the lackluster of the Black Crystal arc, it's time to move on. A lot of new characters, ideas, and new villains are introduced. Reminding me what I don't enjoy about certain Shojo works. Basic ideas with no development.
The promise is here, but sadly not truly explored. And considering how fast these volumes go—and arcs—the likelihood of any of it developing beyond more than just an idea is slim.
Usagi at the beginning seemed to be the same. Especially the whole relationship between Mamoru, Usagi, and Chibiusa. AT first Usagi is frustratingly jealous of her daughter and Mamoru's relationship again. There are subtle changes with Usagi showing a bit more affection towards Usagi, so that's something. Mamoru and Chibiusa don't seem as incestuous, thank goodness. (That's a big something for me.) In fact I'm finally seeing Usagi and Mamoru as more big siblings, which is a relief. Though I do find some of Mamoru and Usagi's romance cold at times, they do have some very warm moments that make up for it later.
This issue shows that Takeuchi has definitely mastered her skills as a manga artist and her style. It's beautiful and I love it. In fact, I can see how it influenced A LOT of manga visually.
Also, I like what this volume is doing with gender bending. The real questions aren't answered, and I fear won't be developed and it will act as more of a gimmick for the series. In the end I can only hope that the next volumes can do more. The core Sailor Senshi feel like puppets, and while used here, are clearly getting left behind. They're falling victim to side character neglect, and being left behind for new characters. Even the cliffhanger felt boring because I called it in my last review. Trudging on.
Sexual Content: Hmmm, I suppose gender bender is here. Woman dressing like a guy. The lesbian/homosexual themes are very minor and probably hard to pick up. Some smooching.
After the adventures in the thirtieth century, Chibi Usa remains in the present with our current cast of Usagi, Mamoru, and the remaining four Sailor Senshi to train in order to become a proper Guardian. This sixth instalment of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon starts off the Mugen/Infinity arc, opening with Mamoru and Rei both having a terrible premonition about the destruction of the Earth.
A new school is introduced, meant only for the elite: Mugen Academy, built on a triangle of reclamation grounds from a new delta (or: creepy things will soon happen on this strange triangle intersection). The gang keeps running into two attendees of the Mugen Academy – the country’s number one car racer, Haruka Tenoh, and an amazingly talented violinist, Michiru Kaioh. Both have a mysterious air and whereas Haruka appears to flirt with and pursue Usagi, Michiru can often be found hanging around Mamoru.
As students of the Mugen Academy are often attacked by monstrous entities, the gang decides to investigate the Academy (and Haruka and Michiru) in more detail. Meanwhile, Chibi Usa befriends a member of the Academy; the pale and often sickly Hotaru Tomoe.
This volume succeeded in getting you interested in the new big bad and new situation right off the bat – though the witches running rampant at the Mugen Academy aren’t that interesting, it’s really Haruka and Michiru who steal the show by apparently manipulating and interfering with our main cast of characters. The sense of dread increases because of the premonition and bad dreams the characters keep having about destruction and death, and it makes you wonder whether Haruka and Michiru can be trusted at all – are they friends or enemies?
Chibi Usa also gets some well-deserved screen-time as the normal child that she is, as opposed to her initial introduction (withdrawn, insecure, and a bit bratty) and her role in the Black Moon arc (grown-up, very angry, but ultimately redeemable). It was great to see her acting like a real kid with confidence, and she shows her sweet nature and ability to easily befriend others, which of course very much mirrors Usagi herself.
A mysterious start of the new arc, with a familiar face introduced on its very last page to tease you even a little bit more about the next instalment. And I’m surely looking forward to it!
It’s no secret that Sailor Moon is my favorite manga ever, but I thought I’d review it since the new anime version is coming back, and this is the volume they’ll start off with. (Hence my twentieth rereading of it.) It’s also many readers’ favorite character arc, and there’s a good reason for that. Most of the major relationship drama and focus on Usagi and Mamoru is over, so the story can truly take off, independent and fierce. We (finally) get the introduction of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, the infamous duo. Haruka, a.k.a. Sailor Uranus, is by far my favorite character of this volume. She is a delight—mysterious, seductive, and energizing. One thing I don’t think the 90’s anime captured was Haruka’s magnetic nature, despite her overall mystery and obvious threats. I hope Crystal gets it right. The artwork around Haruka is worth reading the manga over too. You can really see what makes her stand out. But she isn’t the only fantastic character to arrive. Michiru, a.k.a. Sailor Uranus, premieres too, and as usual, she is flawless. Elegantly cold, but with great reason. In her introduction to Sailor Moon, Neptune is emotionally callous, and I’ve always loved that about her considering how beautiful and artistic she is. It’s not the type of personality you expect at all when she begins to speak, and her overall growth in the upcoming stories is heartwarming. The ending of V. 6 bring us another great introduction, but…Oh, that ending! I wish I could say who is involved, but that just spoils it all. A great continuation of a wonderful series and a lovely beginning to The Death Busters arc. (P.S. The new printed volumes come with awesome translation notes in the back as well.) ~SAT Recommended to: Fans of shojo manga, such as Sailor Moon, Vampire Knight, Maid-sama!. If you’re new to manga, you might like this if you love fantasy, female heroines, female super heroes, and stories relating to the mythology around moon, planet, and stars. And of course I recommend reading the first five before jumping into this one. Favorite Quote: The gears of fate are already turning.
I take it back. I prefer the Dark Kingdom plot-line to this one... Honestly, I lost interest in this tankabon somewhere half-way through it, and it's only 240 pages long!
Still, the upside is that this volume does introduce us to the remaining Scouts - though how it takes Usagi and the others so long to realise it is quite surprising. The return of Pluto is also welcome, she's an interesting character and having been introduced to her in the last arc it's nice to see her human form.
Uranus and Neptune were never my favorite scouts - maybe because I never saw the anime with them in it when I was younger, but they also struck me as feeling superior to Usagi and her Senshi, when they've done far more than they have. It's interesting that they are all listed as being the same ages here, they feel like they ought to be older characters in comparison to the others but still - we already know I mentally up character ages in this series.
Hotaru is probably the most interesting new character introduced, but more so from what comes in the next volume than this. Maybe it's the fact I have read this before, but who alter-ego just feels so obvious for the others not to recognise it sooner...
So far, this is for me the weakest volume, but we shall see what follows.
This has probably been my least favorite so far. I still loved it, but the pace of this volume was so slow. The mystery of the new sailor scouts has been too drawn out and we still don't have any answers by the end of the volume. The plot itself hasn't been very interesting either. It seems pretty cookie cutter (bad guys coming to be bad) with no motives or connections to add any depth to the plot.
However, this book does do a great job exploring character relationships and showing some of the struggles in Mamoru and Usagi's relationship.
Overall, you can tell this volume is setting up for big shake up's within the sailor scouts group, but too much time has been spent setting this up with little payoff so far. And again, I'm not super interested in the current plot line.
Haruka and Michiru appear!!!!!! I love them so much even tho they are completely standoffish and so extra in the beginning. And I mean soooo extra. Them constantly flirting with Mamoru and Usagi and the "I don't remember ever saying we were allies" Y'all need to chill because we all know you love them and are allies and will help them out always. No need to be this extra but I still love it. Oh and HOTARU, I mean she isn't there so much but my poor little baby, you deserve so much better. 5/5
