Erin knows who killed her sister. Now she must prove it .
Quinn Roberts’ body is found spreadeagled in the ransacked bedroom of her modest rented apartment. She’s surrounded by a sea of pills, every color of the rainbow.
But this is no suicide or accidental overdose. The post mortem reveals shocking results. Quinn was strangled to death.
Suspicion immediately falls on Alec, Quinn’s estranged husband. He’s a bully and an adulterer, but is he a killer?
Evidence is hard to come by. As weeks, then months, then years pass, the case remains unsolved. The cops have other murders to investigate. Quinn’s children grow up and move on with their lives. Her friends forget her. Only Quinn’s sister Erin refuses to let go.
Convinced of Alec’s guilt, Erin vows that somehow, someday, she will bring her brother-in-law to justice. But Erin’s determination to uncover the truth may have horrifying consequences . . .

All my stories are character driven. I try to throw in lots of twists and turns to keep the reader interested and guessing. Most of my writing is inspired by real people or events that trigger my imagination.
I am married with two children and currently live in Connecticut where many of my stories take place. I'm happy to FaceTime or Zoom into your book club if our schedules permit. Reach out and I'll do my best to make it happen.

I am torn about my rating. I almost gave it 4 stars. The reason I didn’t is because it had no twist or real mystery to it. It is about a woman who is murdered. In fact she is one of the narrators in this story. We switch back and forth to her life before she is murdered and the horrible treatment by her husband. We are also drawn into the active investigation of her death. While the story was interesting, it read a little too slow for my tastes.
I’m on vacation right now and I just finished my 3rd book! I’m giving four stars for *My Sister’s Killer* by McGarvey Black.
So this was my first book by this author, and I was, like, totally excited when I realized the setting was mostly in Rochester, NY—about an hour from where I lived! I wish she’d included a few more names of local places instead of generic coffee shops and grocery stores, but it’s fine—not a deal breaker.
What I appreciated most was the different viewpoints, and the flashbacks from different characters were, like, done right. This was a textbook psychological domestic thriller, which I, like, love. The reason I’m giving this four stars is because there was a tiny part that really didn’t fit and didn’t add to the story; it almost felt like the author forgot to finish that… and that the twist really wasn’t a twist at the end. Otherwise, great read; will definitely look for more of her books!
Firstly, there's 103 chapters. However, they can be anywhere between a 1 minute read and a 15 minute read. Most are about 5 to 7 minutes. The book is split into 8 parts to help the storyline.
It's an odd perspective to read from. Sometimes, it's Quinn, who responds to the event that's just happened. Or it's various others, like the detective, Quinn's Sister Erin, sometimes even Alec. At some points, I would want Quinns thoughts on what was said, and the next chapter would be Quinn's narrative.
I do feel the sections on Avon Ladies was useless, as it didn't add anything to the story or change anything, other than how they didn't care for her when she wasn't the life and sole of the party.
I really enjoyed this book, actually. I really hated Alec, and I knew you were supposed to, but still.
This story was perfect. The characters were alive and real and inspired a wide range of emotions. Even though I thought maybe at times it was a bit repetitive I had to o keep reading. It was the authors way of telling the story through different voices. I was sad, happy, frustrated, furious, curious and a slew of other emotions that I don’t know how to verbalize. Just a truly exceptional read. Thank you McGarvey Black!
This book has a lot of chapters but they are short and it was such an easy read. I love a good crime mystery so I felt very invested in the investigation part of the book. I did enjoy how the story was told and even the short chapters from the murdered character (I didn’t think I’d like that but it added to the story). I did find some things were repetitive but I was able to get past that. I had the murderer figured out but I liked how it all unfolded at the end.
I absolutely loved this book! There are a lot of POVs, but I actually liked it. It gave the story depth from multiple angles with different characters and timeline perspectives. Quinn, as a ghost, also has chapters which I liked. It was so heart wrenching to see her watching her family struggle with her death and be unable to comfort them. This isn’t a story of Quinn solving her own murder, the day of the murder is “fuzzy” and she cannot remember what happened or how she died. It comes more of the perspective of “unfinished business” for a lack of a better term. She wonders around, without clear purpose and hoping her family won’t give up on finding her killer. Throughout the book, the love shown by her family is immense. Her sister and brother in law, especially, never give up the fight and continue to push the police for answers. We see a lot of the abuse Quinn suffered from Alec through her sister’s eyes. Alec is easily the worst, most unlikeable characters I’ve read recently! A true narcissistic psychopath: he is mentally, emotionally and physically abusive to Quinn. He habitually cheats on her with his college students and manipulates her into believing it’s her fault. What kind of major asshole degrades the mother of his children for her body after she birthed said children?! He is disgusting. Not to mention he is convinced his PhD in history makes him an expert on absolutely everything - another sign of a narcissist. This guy is the worst! Thankfully everything comes around in the end and his own arrogance finally bites him in the ass. Isn’t that always what happens to narcissists?
More on this below with spoilers! 👇🏼👇🏼
Of course I couldn’t write a review without discussing Alec’s demise! I think it was clear from the beginning he didn’t physically kill Quinn himself. He’s “too smart” for that, knowing the police would look directly at him. Willingly giving up his DNA right away told me he wasn’t there and knew that would turn the police off to him. However, like Quinn’s sister and Detective McQ, I had no doubt he was involved in her death. He was hateful and vindictive towards Quinn for wanting alimony, in his mind there was no way to solve the problem without her death. In the scene where he catches a hit and run murder on tape, I immediately suspected he paid off or blackmailed the drunk driver into killing Quinn. No doubt he saw his “opportunity” and took it. I was unsurprised by the ending considering it seemed clear to me from that scene what happened. What I didn’t expect was all the videos! A true narcissist thinking he was too smart to get caught even though he literally recorded himself raping drugged women and admitting to murder for hire. What a downfall for such a superior mind! 🙄 the perfect ending came with his arrest, being found in bed with a 15 year old girl. His raping, cheating, lying ass finally caught up with him. Perfect ending to an excellent story. I loved it!
This book takes you through every emotion that the family of victims deal with. Survivors should be cautioned as this boom has a very real feel to it. I cried many times and felt for every character. Spectacularly written! I will definitely look for more by this author!
I just finished the book “My Sisters Keeper” I absolutely loved the it and all of the character’s, with the exception of “Alex” what an evil, selfish, know it all pervert. I have a twin sister and she and I are close like Erin and Quinn, so reading My sister’s keeper resonated deeply and painfully. This book is a must read.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and due to how amazing this book was I can’t wait to see others by McGarvey. I’m sad it’s over I wish I could read it again for the first time! So good
I truly enjoyed this story, from beginning to end. It was entertaining, suspenseful, and well written! I found myself being drawn in more at each turned page, visualizing the characters and locations.
WOW....WOW...WOW couldnt put this down, was on edge of seat all the way threw book, finished it in a day and half,(as had to sleep at some point) 100%+ recommend 👌
This book was definitely different. I enjoyed reading and had a good twist. It's a easy read. I liked the understanding showing how the police and family interacted. Read on.
A ghost of a murdered woman, stats in hope of justice.
Wasn't sure about this when I read about the victims ghost having around. However, as with his other books, well written, fully formed characters, that you can picture on the page. Will they ever get her murderer? Read on.
I love this new author who I just discovered this week and have already read two of her books. Once I start reading, I’m drawn into the story and hate to put the book down. Can’t wait to get started on a third book by McGarvey Black.
4 stars! Kept me engaged throughout and I had to finish it because I needed to know what happens! Let’s just say karma got the bad character in the end!! It could be a little choppy at times and wanted to know more of what happened to the kids, but overall a good read!
Slow start but all in all a good story about how Quinn was controlled by her cheating husband I gave it 4 stars as the story was pretty much predictable and was waiting for a twist that never happened
This is a story that gives merit to the saying, the truth will always come out. Great satisfaction can be had when it (the truth) finally does come light.
We’re getting the prose from a dead person? That was unsettling and certainly unamusing. I should’ve known I wouldn’t be that into it considering the first book was a 3 at best. Not a worthy read.
Easy to read and follow. Never a doubt who was guilty but author tried to make you look elsewhere and was very good at it. Will definitely read another book of his.
Although I like mystery with a twist, I finished this book. It was pretty easy to figure out who killed Quinn but I enjoyed reading how it all unfolded.
