The author of Brush Up Your Shakespeare!, It's Greek to Me! and By Jove! reveals the many touchstone phrases and words from the Bible that are part of everyday speech, including book, song, and play titles.
I found this book a pretty useful overview of all the ways Biblical literature shows up in our culture. Each section is about two pages of lively information on where a phrase or reference (The Tower of Babel, Forty Days and Forty Nights, Sodom and Gomorrah) shows up in the Bible, what it meant in that context, and where its been taken since Biblical days. The references are handily organized in Biblical order.
