I rested the ball on my hip and walked back toward the equipment shed. In the dark. Alone. With a boy. I would be completely freaking out over varsity soccer tryouts if it weren't for the new student, Graham, who's helping me practice. He has the most amazing green eyes, curly brown hair, and perfect legs. Plus, we have lots in common, since all we both care about is soccer! Well, that's all he cares about. But my heart beats so fast when we're on the field together . . . and I don't think it's just from all the running around.
Trisha is focused on soccer. Her two best friends, Sara and Beth, also play soccer, but they'd rather be hanging out at Pop's flirting with the boys.
When the JV Soccer coach announces that two of the players will be bumping up to Varsity, Trisha is overjoyed to hear she's on the short list for consideration. Sara is by far the best player, but she isn't nearly as excited as Trisha. So while Sara and Beth head off to Pop's, Trisha decides she's going to put in extra practice time.
When she heads over to the other field, she finds a lone (cute) boy practicing, as well. Trisha has never seen him before, and he's good! He introduces himself as Graham, a new student. He invites Trisha to practice with him, and the two get serious. They push each other harder and soon they are both aching and drenched in sweat. They decide to continue practicing together each afternoon and Graham is just as determined to help Trisha reach Varsity status.
But it doesn't help Trisha when her two friends notice Graham and start telling Trisha how hot he is. Trisha isn't into boys yet, and Graham can't be bothered with girly girls. But when Sara and Beth keep on about Graham, Trisha slowly starts to realize that she gets strange feelings when she's around him.
When the Varsity coach comes to preview the girls before tryouts, Trisha loses her concentration and knows that she can't be around Graham anymore. She'll just have to practice on her own to make the Varsity cut.
THE BOYFRIEND GAME is a sweet look at first love. Trisha is taken by surprise with her feelings for Graham, but what is equally as appealing is seeing Graham struggle with his own conflicting emotions.
The story is simple and quick, but leaves the reader with a happy feeling by the final page.
Truthfully I didn’t mean to read this book. Sure, I bought it on amazon and it had been sitting on e-reader for a while now, but I never meant to read it. I was actually looking for one of my favorite scenes in another book The Boyfriend Thief, and I only saw ‘The Boyfriend’ part and I skipped to the part where the good scene in that one happens. I realized after I had started reading the scene that wasn’t really the scene I was looking for that I was in a different book, I was now curious. Cause you see I had gone to one of the only kissing scenes in the book and what can I say? It was a good kissing scene. And now I wanted to read the book. So, I’m sitting in bed curled up reading the e-reader when I realize that I am half way done with the book and that it is almost 1am. And my thoughts were to keep reading. So even though I really didn’t mean to read this one, I did and am I glad I did. Because this one was definitely worth it. It was just some light YA sporty fluff, that was thoroughly enjoyable.
I liked the characters, Grahm and Trisha were such a sweet pair and I loved how their friendship and eventually relationship developed, it was very sweet. I also liked most, and I say most of the side characters, sure I wanted to strangle half of them. But I want to strangle half the people in my life, so no difference there. But the person I wanted to strangle the most was probably Sara. God, you and clones like you are the reason I don’t play Soccer and Basketball any more, no matter how much I try I am never as good as people like you with your…grrrr! I’m all frustrated now. Oh well. Enough of me, back on to the actual book. Right, lets move on to the plot.
I really don’t feel like explaining the book to everyone, so I’m just gonna give you a picture telling. [image error] And then... Then more... [image error] And then finally...!!
You got that right? Well. Who cares if you didn’t? Satan (A.K.A. My younger sister Vidya could have probably understood that, so if you didn’t I recommend checking yourself into a mental institute). Moving on…I liked the plot, I thought it was refreshing from all of the other YA novels I’ve been reading lately, and the plot was original and I really enjoyed reading what happened. Like how the plot was based around Grahm’s and Trisha’s friendship, but there were several other stuff in there. I thought that it was done really well, it was really likeable/enjoyable.
The writing was also really likeable/enjoyable and the writing was a lot like most of the other YA novel writing I’ve read lately but it was still good, it still kept me interested. And cause I don’t know what else to say here, I figured I would just rate it, so I have decided to give the writing a 3/5. It was good, not extraordinary, but good, and I liked it.
Overall, this is a good book that I recommend to a few different groups of people. 1) YA Lovers 2) YA Sports Lovers 3) People who like books about sports, and teen romances in the sports. 4) That’s about it. If you think you would like this book you probably would. It’s very enjoyable. Right…so that's the end of my review. And all I can say is...
Right. The Boyfriend Game. I have a lot to say about this one. I’ll just get this out of the way first, I love the cover. Very chic. Very cute. Very attractive. Super lovely. I like.
What’s it about? Well, we have a freshman girl -Trisha- whose sole reason to live is soccer and she wants to make the varsity team this year. Problem is, there are only two spots on the team and her best friend Sara is definitely getting the first one. So to get the other one, Trisha works harder and goes to extra practices with a sophomore Graham.
Both of them hit it off because they don’t like the other sex and only care about soccer. Wait, it gets better. They’re not gay. They’re just not into the whole dating shebang. Of course she ends up liking him. She just can’t admit it because ’Omigod he’ll like, run away’
Moving on. I found Trisha extremely annoying. She takes the term ‘tomboy’ to a whole new level. Hello? I’m kind of a tomboy myself but I’d NEVER be flattered if the boy of my dreams called me a guy with highlights. That actually happened. I’m not kidding you here. She also doesn’t wanna get noticed because of her boobs and gorgeous hair but gets jealous when Graham notices other girls. Interesting.
Let me also add that she doesn’t like attention from any guy who doesn’t play sports. I mean, she was pretty irritated with a guy who liked her until she found out that he played *gasp* hockey. Then he magically got cuter and had attractive dark green eyes and long lashes. Awww swoon. Not.
Through half of the book, Trisha wanted Graham to not notice that she was a female and treat her as equal and when he does exactly that, there she is yelling and saying you know I’ve always been a girl blah blah. I did not enjoy hearing about how better Sara was at soccer after every single page and there’s only so much of Crud! that I can take after every.single.line.
Okay. The romance itself was cute and fluffy and very ‘he likes me. he likes me not.’ I did enjoy the whole soccer thing and sometimes Graham and Trisha were funny but the only couple that I loved were Beth and Ross. Because you know, they were shy and made gaga eyes at each other from across the field. Great.
Still, I found myself smiling at the end so this book wasn’t that bad. An OK read.
I really liked how this story started out at first. Girl who loves Soccer so much everything doesn't seem to matter to her, until she meets a guy who was so good at the sport she loved and everything changed. I liked it how Trisha seemed clueless and awkward of the feelings she's starting to have for Graham.
What I do not like is how she's whiny and blames it to her bestfriends. I mean how could you blame your bestfriends for making you realize you like someone? Shouldn't you be grateful that they helped you realize that? I was a little bit irritated with Trisha because she was being a brat. Instead of helping Sara with her situation with Kirk, she goes on and complain about how Sara and Beth ruined her life. She loved soccer that much that she's blaming everything on her friends?
This is a classic example of how girls should not assume. How can Trisha assume that Graham doesn't like her? And all the other assumptions made the story unnecessarily complicated.
I feel bad for her though. She had to denounce her feelings for Graham because she was so afraid she'd lose the one thing that matters to her the most. Soccer. And when she saw Sara and Beth getting all happy, and she felt alone, I feel really sad for her.
She finally realized she was a girl in a really painful way.
It's funny how things seemed to worked out for her in the end though. She got into the Varsity Team, she made up with her friends and she felt good about Soccer again. I guess in the end Trisha is just so naive and stubborn and totally clueless how to deal with her feelings for Graham. She was so unsure and it was kind of cute in a way. Her friends had to help her out again.
Overall I think this an okay book. I enjoyed reading it. It wasn't the best but I was satisfied with how it ended. I think Graham and Trisha would make a cute couple!

So I'm officially in love with jocks and jock-reads. I mean, how can I not? That's the only time I can really read something related to sports because sports and me? We can't go together in one sentence.
The Boyfriend Game is such a sweet, fun and cute read about young love at its simplest. Oh, young love. The wonders of it.
Trisha is my type of character, those who subvert female stereotypes. I don't know I just like reading about girls who aren't girly-girly and now, I'm officially in love with sports. The closest I could get to them is to read about them. Trisha is witty, funny and well, fascinating to read. It's so engaging to read about her voice, her thoughts are like that of a young girl not sure how to approach this wonderful thing called love. Isn't that just cute?
Then there's Graham.
Those kind of boys who see people for who they really not. Not looks, not appearance not what others see. It's like they can see through you and they still appreciate and like you. OMG. This is like falling in love all over again.
It's so fascinating to read how these two characters discover and bond with each other, they have so much things in common despite being different genders. They have this huge chemistry going on and it's just so cute and so giddy and then there's me. With my boring life.
I love who both these characters change and develop over the story, being young can be such a good thing can't it? It's great how sports can lead them to each other.
I'M SO GIDDY AND CRAZY AND KINIKILIG WHILE READING THIS. REALLY.
It breaks my heart with happiness. Too much emotions.
Simplemente estuvo bien.
The Boyfriend Game is a short and incredibly cute story. I didn’t know what to expect but I found that I really enjoyed this short story. I finished this book with a big smile. Trisha and Graham have one thing in common- Soccer. Upon meeting each other and finding out that they are both dedicated to soccer, they train together to improve their performance on the field and for Trisha to be bumped up to the Varsity team. They keep each other focused and they push each other to the limit. When Trisha’s friends make her notice that Graham is hot and totally swoon-worthy, she begins to develop romantic feelings for him. But Graham isn’t into dating girly girls… Trisha is a freshman that loves soccer above anything else. She was such a naive and cute character. She has a sense of humour that made me smile. I loved her dedication to soccer and willingness to push herself to the limit. She’s insecure and has a bad habit of assuming things and jumping to conclusions. Graham is like Trisha in so many ways. I liked Graham, he was a sweet guy. As predictable as this story was, his feelings for Trisha was actually really confusing in the beginning. Nonetheless, I think that Trisha and Graham make a really cute couple. Their conversations made me laugh and giggle.
The Boyfriend Game is an easy-read and it doesn’t disappoint. I recommend this book for those who love cute romances and are looking for a sugary sweet love story.
The Boyfriend Game is a romance story about two football (soccer) obsessed teenagers who are too scared to admit their feelings for each other.
This is a an easy read though it did not hold my attention enough to be pick up, read and finish in one go. Having said that it was still an okay read.
The plot was simple, revolving around a girl who's only focus is getting on the varsity football team. There are, of course, complications but they were predictable. The ending is
You will cringe at the obvious cluelessness of our couple, However cute when together, the couple had bizarre conversations that definitely entertained me though probably not in the way the author intended (though who I am to say what the author intended).
I found the heroin, Trisha, I bit of a drama queen. This annoyed me no end and is probably the main reason I gave the book a 3 start rating. I will forgive Trisha a little of her drama as her dedication and love for football (soccer) was admirable.
The male counterpart, Graham, was clueless . Despite this I would actually like to have a friend like Graham in my life.
This book tell about Trisha, a girl that like soccer. And she have 2 bestfriend, Beth and Sara. Life of Trisha will be completed when She have been choosen from her coach to varsity for the rest of the season. Her coach, Merrill said that they will be having tryoutrs with the vasity practice and for this the top fice girls on JV will be invited to that practice and only two will move up. Beside Trisha Perkins, Sara Myers as friend that have been choosen too. So after the announcement, Kirk that the boy who falling in love to Trisha although Trisha don't like him and she think that Kirk is the stupid boy and she only like for the boy that love sport specially the soccer . He invited Trisha and her frien for going to Pop's for a little celebration. But, Trisha won't for going that party. She choose for practice than party. So, when her friend going to party, Trisha going to the field for practive. When, she want to practice, she shocked by someone. And that is Graham Forham that trasnferred a couple weeks ago. And he is a athletics too like Trisha. So, they finish for practice, they make a point for meet again and practice together.
After some day, When Trisha with her friend and Kirk too. They meet Graham that has been talking with a girl,Ashley. And in this, Trisha think that Ashley as his girlfriend. And I think, in there, Trisha start jealous because of Ashley. Ok, after that, Sara, who falling in love with Kirk, is angry because she jealous when she know that Kirk only see Trisha and not for her. Beside that, Beth talk to Trisha, that Graham maybe like her. And in this, Trisha try to say not like to them. So, I think in this book, talk a complicated of love. Trisha like Graham but Graham only say that the relation of them only friend and Trisha think that Graham only like to Ashlye, and then Kirk that only love to Trisha although Trisha don't like Kirk and plus Sara that love to Kirk.
After that, When in the party, Trisha that always like a boy. Her mother has been success for change her daughter to be a beautiful girl. So in that party, Kirk was suprised with the changes of Trisha. and Trisha hope that Graham will see her and like her. But in this party, not like her expectation. Because, when she said to Kirk that she dont like him. Kirk said that he is a athletics too, Ice hockey and will be go to Canada for some tournaments. So Trisha start to speak with him. And this is make Sara very jealous and she angry to her best friend. Beside that, Sara talk to Trisha that Graham has been kiss with Ashley. When Trisha listen about this, she hope that devi says is not true.
Trisha meet with Graham. And finally, Graham kiss her but after that, He say that this kiss dont mean anything for him, so when Graham kissh with Ashley, that is only friend. When, Trisha listen that statement from Graham, and make her hurt. So, after that, Trisha said to Graham for not meet her again forever.
So, What happen after that?
Whether friendship from Trisha & Sara could be come back again? Whether relationship from Trisha & Graham could be come back again ? So, Who will be chose Trisha ? Graham or Kirk?
Ups, I think, If I countinue my review, does not make suprise for my friend that want read this book, so I will end in this, enough !!!.... And overall story, I like this book + make me smile with this ending
Well, it was a very quick and light read. Nothing unusual or new that I haven’t read before but sine I am bumming around the house before my night duty later, I figured, why not try to lessen your to be read books while I’m on it to at least do something. Since the TV programs I used to watch also had their season ender (a total bummer that is) and I can’t play Angry Birds (since I learned long ago that it was not as fun as it is when you play with some of your friends so all of you can go “yey!” and “how did you do that!” whenever you hit all those green pigs), so all the options I have is to watch a movie saved in my desktop or read.
Since you already figured that I’m going to go on and on about this, (before going to my actual review) you have to maybe just skip the paragraphs that I just blabbered to fill some spaces around.
So, here it is, I discovered my athletic side when my best friend and some of my friends tagged me along to try out in Taekwondo way back when we were in sophomore year in high school and it was fun, hanging with your friends and learning some cool techniques and different kicks. Plus, I am also competitive in nature so I also understand Trisha’s frustration when even her friends do not take her passion seriously. By the way, I wasn’t that good. I won some medals but didn’t managed to get a promotion (since my friend [we where only three left came junior year] also wanted to quit because of late hours we spend, and now I’m also telling my history. LOL)
To cut the review short, because I’m feeling very talkative today, it was okay for a quick read. It’s about a story of a girl, a sporty girl at that meeting a guy who shared the same passion she have in soccer but then she started liking him and the guy panicked because he see her as one of his buddies. Then she have to do some damage control to save their friendship until the guy kissed her to prove that friends can kiss and it won’t mean a thing. Trisha decided then that she can’t be friends with him at that point or not temporarily. Graham on the other hand, the main guy on this book, begins to realize that he likes her too, like, like that is. For more than a friend and begun to see her for more than like a boy with highlights.
It was quite funny too with Trisha’s conversation with her friends, her mom and Graham. If anyone is looking for a very quick, light read about a sporty girl and a guy who couldn’t figure if they like each other (at first, that is), well what a spoiler I am? But then, you probably guessed already. Yeah, I am still a definitely sucker for romance-thingy. I wonder how long will this phase last. LOL. Or if I will ever get tired of reading these books? Or if I will grow old and still enjoy it? Or when will I stop wondering? Shush. Okay, stopping now. What a klutz-y review I just made. My apologies for that but give me some slack; I’m trying to entertain my self since I’m bored out of my mind now. Okay, shutting up now.
They have one thing in common - Soccer. But would that be enough to take their relationship into the next level?
Trisha and Graham both have the nature of sports in their blood. Upon meeting each other and finding out that they are both dedicated to soccer, they decided to train together to improve their abilities and performance on the field and in order for Trisha to be chosen for the Varsity Team. Together they declare their passion for playing sports and their dislikes for the dating scene. But things get complicated when Trisha's friends makes her notice that Graham is hot and swoon-worthy. She begins to feel something romantic for him, but that should be washed away immediately, before Graham runs from her as fast as possible...
I could say that its really not the type of story that would surely wow its readers. It was pretty much average. But I think that is the reason that you would surely want to read it over and over again. It's extreme simplicity. The story beautifully portrays the spark of having your first love.
The characters are just so cute! Trisha is such a cute and naive character. I really love her dedication to soccer and her ability to push herself to the limit just to reach her goals. She also has a great sense of humor and has a way of looking at things that is really adoring. Though she can have a bad habit of assuming things, she's still as sweet and cute. Graham is much more like Trisha. They are very much alike in too many ways. Which clearly what attracts them to each other. Nonetheless, I think the relationship of these two are way too cuter for anyone.
It was an incredible short story. At first I didn't know what to expect from it aside from having sports present on its premise. hah!, but after finishing it, I found that I really do enjoy it. It was an easy-read and it would surely not dissapoint you. I finished it with a big smile on my face. Especially that everyone has it's own happily-ever-after on this book. Cute!
This is such a cute little sugary sweet love story.
PS. Sorry for the extreme use of the word "Cute" on this review. It's just that, no other words can help me describe it. It's just cute! :)
This book is about Trisha Perkins. She's a freshman on the JV soccer team at her school and she's got a shot at trying out to make it onto the Varsity soccer team. This is something that she wants above all else and because she knows that there are better players on her team that will probably get it, she decides to practice a lot harder because though those other girls are better than her, she's got more heart and she wants it more than they do so she's going to work her little butt off to get the spot.
Enter Graham.
Graham is a sophomore playing on the Varsity team and he's really good. He's also pretty dedicated to soccer just like her so they hit it off and they start practicing together in an effort to help Trisha's chances of making the Varsity team.
--------------------------- my review:
Cute Romantic First Love story!
For me The Boyfriend Game is just a typical YA romance. Simple and fast reading novel (it only took me 3-4 hours to finish, i guess?) but it definitely worth reading. And the idea of first love is totally cute and sweet. :)
The Boyfriend Game will definitely give you the satisfied-happy-feeling like other happy-ending stories. ;)
After reading this I'm really getting into this soccer. haha, At first soccer is not my thing - I'm more like table tennis girl - but after reading some novels with the touch of soccer (like Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowan Boys, Angel Cup- both my favs, and this novel) I'm really looking forward to learn how to play soccer. :p
Trisha's life is about soccer. She really wants to be a part of varsity and she is willing to work harder than everyone to reach her goal. The problem is none of her best friends who are in the same team with her want to practice with her. Not that they don't want to, but they are so into their men crush that anything else seems to be less important. Trisha has an admirer. Kirk likes her so much even though she never gave a good respond to him. Meanwhile, one of her best friend, Sara loves Kirk. Things get more complicated when a young boy,Graham came out of nowhere, a quite charming one and more importantly, he is good in soccer.
Graham offers to help Trisha work with her skill on soccer. And just like they said, when two people spend a lot of time together, there'll be a chance to fall in love with each other. But the problem is, Graham hasn't figured out how he feels about Trisha yet, whether it is just a friendship or more than that.
It's a quick and fun read. I love how Trisha tried the best out of her to achieve her dream, but I'm not a fan of her relationship with Graham, which is quite confusing. This book is recommended for those who love reading and soccer.
I haven't read YA fiction in a long time, so reading this was like a blast from the past.
Trish, the protagonist, loves soccer and doesn't really understand why her friends are going gaga for boys. When she meets Graham, attraction is instantaneous, if they both weren't so phobic about relationships. Graham is the same as Trish, his life is all about soccer and he has no place of girls. of course, both of them like each other, but have no idea how to go about it - fearing that telling each other would mean the end of their friendship.
For a short YA, the Trisha's insecurities were nicely portrayed, especially about her view of Graham's feelings toward her. Trisha also faces other stressors, like making it to the Varsity team and being hated by her BFFs.
This was a cute and quick read. I thought the characters were great, and I totally loved their awkwardness, so adorable. :)
I also just have to say that if I'd had a hot guy like Graham to practice soccer with when I was younger...I probably would have kept playing. :P I do watch soccer sometimes though...mostly when Cristiano Ronaldo is playing...that still counts, right? haha
Anyways, this book was adorable, and I think it's the perfect book to just sit down with when you want a quick a fun read. It's got a light and flirty feel too it, and it's great when you're not in the mood for anything too serious. The Boyfriend Game is about 150 pages long (the other 20-some is an excerpt for Love At First Click), and it has a fast pace, so you can honestly finish it in a solid hour or two, depending on how fast you read. ;)
The Boyfriend Game is a light read about Trisha, a soccer lover, who's trying her best to get into varsity and Graham, the boy who she ended up practicing with and spending time with.
Trisha and Graham are both devoted to soccer and had uttered at the very beginning that they couldn't imagine themselves being in a relationship since they couldn't find something -- or someone -- more important than soccer.
It was fun reading about how Trisha and Graham spend their moments together, the things that they talked about and the smiles and the laughter that they shared. Predictably, Trisha realized that she has developed feelings for Graham and I guess, that's the start of the crisis.
In the end, after so much trouble and cold shoulders, the two ended up together. Reading the novel was cute and it provided some light and sweet romance for me.
A few months ago, I just skipped through this book. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER ! 'Cause this is my kind of story! The only reason why this book made me sad is because it's so short. If it weren't for school work, I would've finished this in one sitting. Besides the story being short, it was a great book!
\I like the part where he said, "So does this mean I have a varsity girlfriend?" my insides were so giggly! I've always wanted to be a varsity soccer player (just like trisha, it's my dream to be in a varsity team, but then i never had the guts to try out for varsity, my soccer playing = fun time only, and my soccer playing days ended in junior year, unfortunately). Plus! I really like soccer players so I enjoyed this book so much. Love love love <3
Are there anymore books like this?! Please recommend!

I looooove this book. Soccer is sexy when you think of Trisha and Graham. Both not into dating (which was what kind of frustrated me). But you cannot deny their chemistry together. They are both extraordinary. But Graham is the more frustrating one. He's like, allergic to girls. I mean, what's his problem? It's obvious that he likes Trisha so much :D Trisha, who was indenial at first too. They are so cute together. Where do you see a couple who finds soccer as the center of their conversation? NOWHERE, right? :)
The Boyfriend Game will tell you to act like yourself. Don't change for other's sake, because maybe, they like the real you. And once you find your better half, don't miss the opportunity. Because FRIENDS is never enough ;)
So this was definitely meant for a younger audience, but I still enjoyed the overall story. Trisha and Graham both love soccer and have a great time practicing together. Their relationship was cute and although he really acted his age at times, he was also pretty sweet with her. The story moved along pretty quick. The characters acted pretty young at times, which I guess is okay since they were only fifteen. I was first drawn to this by the cover and thought it sounded pretty cute. I honestly wouldn't have read it if I had realized just how "young" it was written, still a cute story though.
(The edition I read is called The Boyfriend Game, but I found it on GoodReads under Playing the Field.)
The Boyfriend Game is an adorable story with cute boys, first crushes, hanging out, going for pizza, and sharing ice cream cones. Just too cute for words really!
Trisha and Graham are all about soccer. They are friends, but do they want more? This story is about taking that next step. Putting yourself out there and in the game—the dating game. How do you balance cute boys, varsity tryouts, and best friends all while trying to hold on to what makes you who you are?
A light read with a wonderful message to both boys and girls that if you work hard, stand up for yourself, and be yourself—you just might come out on top on the field and off.
