Trout: Second Edition, revised and enlarged, with new illustrations and two chapters on Spinning for Trout

Rate this book
Many of the tactics still used by today's trout fishermen were first documented almost 80 years ago by Mr. Bergman in this book. This is the consummate reference book about trout fishing for trout fishermen, and it is written in an easy-to-read story-telling type style. One can easily learn by reading it for pleasure without even realizing you are gaining knowledge and insight. Some parts of the book are more instructive, especially regarding types of flies, fly patterns, and where and when they are most effective. Other parts can almost be viewed as historical relative to where Mr. Bergman was fishing and how he fared. Through it all, Mr. Bergman presents the information not as an expert, but as a fellow fisherman sharing what he has learned from his many years of fishing. It is an incredible book especially considering it is still relevant today, more than half a century since it was first published. ( Amazon customer)

Someone told me this was the "Old Testament" of angling literature and I think that's a pretty apt description. Fascinating in some parts, dull in others. With plenty of time-honored, fundamental truths undeniably scattered throughout but also lengthy sections - mostly about equipment - that are now completely outdated though still valuable from a historical perspective. Overall, very well written with lots of great stories and even a fair amount of humor mixed in. Deserving of its status as a 'classic' IMHO.

This is a great old time Trout Fishing Book. The author is a well known angler and writer. He wrote the fishing column for Outdoor Life Magazine for many years.
A feature of this book is the colorful illustrations. Plates of dry, wet and streamer flies are a colorful addition to this book. Ray is a great writer and can help any of us anglers to improve our technique and enjoyment in the outdoors when fishing.
