Sandra Ridley was a finalist for the Robert Kroetsch Award for Innovative Poetry in 2009. Of her new "In minimal and carefully chosen language, Ridley mesmerizes. Each poem pays heed to the senses. When necessary, Ridley troubles syntax , but not in a heavy-handed way. Lines are built and broken, based on rhythm, image, sound. Ridley gives us mood, tone and exquisite detail enough to allow us to be compelled by her characters, but she hasn't gone overboard. She's given us spaces to fill in for ourselves." Hauntingly beautiful. Sensuous and dark. I highly recommend it if you enjoy poetry books written in a contemporary style and especially if you like books where all the poems are good individually, but tie together to make a greater whole.
Note of caution: If you are good at interpreting poetry and are disturbed by themes of sexual abuse and mental illness, I would be cautious about what state of mind you are in when you read this.
The imagery is startling, a kind of shock treatment for the reader, the equivalent of being tarred and feathered, being addicted to morphine. Ridley succeeds in garnering all the empathy she can for her patient.
