More than a quarter century ago Ed Garvey drew public attention to the wonders and precariousness of the Appalachian Trail with his much publicized thru-hike, so memorably documented in his Appalachian Hiker books. Twenty years later, at the age of seventy-five, he once again began the long trek northward, to rediscover a trail that had changed significantly in the intervening years. The New Appalachian Trail is both the story of his journey and a practical guide to backpacking on the AT. It is also a tribute to the unprecedented cooperative effort of government and volunteers to secure and maintain this extraordinary national treasure.
Not your typical hiker. He spent more time off the trail with his friends and fans than he did on the trail. It was interesting to read his perception of trail maintenance, reroutes and litter.
Ed Garvey came to speak at my Girl Scout troop and inspired me back in the 70’s. Good to read his daily journal. He is 70 as he makes this hike. Rough going for him.
Wonder what it would be like to hike the Appalachian Trail in the 1990's? Look no further. Garvey outlines everything you'd need to know in a half guidebook, half travel journal format.
hmmm, what would it be like to hike the appalachian trail when I'm 75? this is one person's take on the task. there is one great piece of advice for all would be hikers-this from lewis and clark's expedition and relayed by mr. garvey. don't forget your umbrella.
