The Monkees and Davy Jones continue to have a lot of fans. This amazing book, Daydream believin' is wonderful. Many would be surprised to learn that Davy continued to live in the US, and up until his death in February 2012, he was still performing.
If you were a little girl in the 60's, chances are you spent one evening a week glued to the television watching the Monkees. Many of us spent the rest of our spare time listening to the records over and over again...and daydreaming about marrying the beautiful little English member of the group, Davy Jones. Many would be surprised to learn that Davy continued to live in the US, and up until his death in February 2012, he was still performing.
Around twenty-five years ago he wrote his autobiography, They Made a Monkee Out of Me. After all this time had passed, he realized that his life had changed and he had more to say, so he went back to the original book, made some changes, and doubled the size of it to include everything up to the time he wrote it in the year 2000.
It's an interesting, smooth read, with many never before published photos of David and his beloved horses and family. He talks of moving to the states as a teenager, far from home and on his own for the most part. Originally he starred in the Broadway play "Oliver!" which started him on the road to being a Teen Idol. The tv show came along and for the rest of his life, Davy would be known as a Monkee, which he embraced and was proud of. He was a sweet, down to earth man, and most every fan who ever met him was amazed at how accessible and friendly he was.
His book is a mostly happy telling of a Hollywood story, stars that he met, his life in the 60's, marriages, divorces, and things he's done recently. If you liked the Monkees, I highly recommend buying the book. However I just noticed it's now $250 in Amazon. It must be out of print.
I had read, They made a Monkee out of me previously. Lots of sour grapes as he seemed to be taken advantage of more than the others. Sad but that happened to so many of the musicians and actors through the years. ( I have read numerous biographies and autobiographies and that seems the norm not the exception). This updated book seems to bridge being upset and holding a grudge to my fans are everything. On one of the so-called fan tours, he did not show to a meet and greet I was at because the venue misspelled his name on marquee. So much for fans are everything. I don’t hold a grudge as I knew this about him before going so not totally surprised. I was able to get him to wave to my son after a concert by telling him to yell “thank you Mr Jones!” When everyone else was yelling Davy. That’s him, RIP, but dang I enjoyed his music.
