"Hysterical yet poignant" love-story-cum-thriller with a science-fiction flavor that spills into the spiritual elements of nature. Even Steven is a story about a widow and widower who meet in the tiny New England town of Apple after losing their true loves to murder and misfortune. Packed with an hilarious array of diverse characters and events, this "genre-bending" tale of love, death and the meaning of life, from the author of The Walking Man, is as fascinating as it is cheekily quirky.
Wright Forbucks writes dark comic fiction. His works feature a wicked sense of humor and plots involving spiritual quests. In addition to the critically acclaimed, THE WALKING MAN, Mr. Grist has written three other novels, including BILLY GRIST, EVEN STEVEN and THE GENERAL STORE. In addition to writing Mr. Grist is an inventor. He is married and the father of three young boys. He also has a degree from a school that begins with "H" that is located Cambridge, MA. So, he really isn't an idiot :)
I've read one other book by Mr. Forbucks, THE WALKING MAN, and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I had no hesitation in picking this one up. It more than satisfies! Mr. Forbucks describes this book as 'genre-bending', and indeed it is, in the most amusing of ways. Mystery, romance, revenge driven thriller, science fiction, family drama, a smidge of religion - EVEN STEVEN covers them all in a captivating way. The writing is fast-paced and wickedly funny, and the plot twists caught me by surprise and left me snorting with laughter! (Not convenient at all when reading in bed next to a sleeping husband...)
There's quite a clever mind behind this book, and reading about the qPhone technology that drives much of the action makes me wonder what Mr. Forbucks does in his spare time - tinker with quantum physics, perhaps? He's certainly a keen observer of human behavior, and manages to capture us in all our hilarity. A solid five stars - highly recommended.
What a fun book. Funny, poignant, and unlike anything I've read for a long time. From existential themes to romance to the space-time continuum. And yet the story is fun and easy to follow with colorful characters. This is the second book I've read by this author (the first was 'The Walking Man'), and I enjoy his breezy, humorous style. A great read if you're looking for something different.
This was an unusual yet enthralling novel. The characters were so very unique and the story bizarre yet interesting. The ending was not what I expected. It was not what I usually read but I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Four Stars.
Awesome book. Intelligent, humorous and outlandish. Not only is this a completely original (and fantastic) story, but the author does an excellent job developing the characters and making them come alive in your mind. I can't wait to read more by this author.
Original and engaging. Great characters. The title is from the character Steven who starts out as a revenge artist, a.k.a. getting even. Everything gets evened out by the end, not in vengeance, but in balance. I like it.
