Little Pear, a little Chinese boy, likes to help his father on the farm. When they go to the fair, at nearby market town, to sell food and animals, he spends the coins his father gives him on a pair of rabbits.
Lattimore was an American author and illustrator born in what was called the American Compound in Shanghai and raised in China where her father, David Lattimore, taught English at a Chinese government university. Lattimore came to the United States and studied art in Oakland, California, Boston, and New York City and worked for several years as a freelance artist. She became known as the author and illustrator of more than fifty popular children's books; her first book, Little Pear, is considered a children's classic.
One more Little Pear book. I like these books because they're funny without being rude, and charming and sweet. I like how Little Pear is growing older and smarter. I also liked how the merchants took into account his age when selling things. It just seemed like a kinder, gentler time in the world.
This fun book about China inspired us to go to San Francisco's Chinatown last week so Joshua could buy little firecrackers (poppers) to throw onto the sidewalk and where Rachel could buy rice candy and fortune cookies.
