The Snow Angel is a beautiful, dreamy picture book, that will spark the imagination of children.
It's about a little girl named Elsa, who makes a snow angel and tells her younger brother that Snow Angels are real. Her brother starts dreaming of adventures with the Snow Angel, but Elsa just smiles and thinks he is being imaginative. Until one day it snows again, and the snow covers her boot tracks, but she discovers deep in the woods another snow angel, and she begins to wonder if maybe there are Snow Angels after all...
The pictures are oil paint, with lots of blues and reds. Most of the pictures span 1 and 2/3 of the two pages- a style I haven't seen before. The book also has beautiful inside covers showing the children tromping through the snow.
I would recommend this book for kindergarten through 3rd grade. It could be used to spark writing prompts, and the soothing nature of the script will probably help calm the kids down. Five stars, hands down.
Elsa creates a fun little fantasy of a snow angel for her little brother. Because he longs to see a snow angel, it comes as no surprise to Elsa or the reader that he would embellish upon her little trickery.
McAllister creates a playful and tender sibling relationship in The Snow Angel. While the story is a fantasy, the messages that it brought in are ones that a little sibling can especially enjoy: Things aren't always as they seem; and sometimes the younger, less-experienced sibling is actually right.
