The book I purchased has the same cover art but is a first edition, hard cover copy. It is absolutely beautiful. I love Eichenberg's woodcut illustrations and discovered his art after I purchased a set of Bronte sister books -- Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, (1943 Random House first edition). His illustrations in those books were so emotionally haunting, perfect for gothic novels.
One of the great things about this book is that there are 2 pencil, concept drawings (sometimes one is in color) before the actual woodcut illustration. Eichenberg's talent as an illustrator is exceptional. His writing is great -- loved After the Blast' - great fable, as well as 'The Peaceable Tree' and 'Isaiah's Riddle'.
From the book -- Eichenberg's work does not so much "enhance" as it "embodies" a text. The word of the text is made flesh, as it is in the work of Rembrandt and Holbein and Durer. -- Williama Packard, 1979
