First off, the title of this book is accurate. This is a book about Western Philosophers, not Western Philosophy. The author assumes a great deal of information on the part of the reader. This would be a good book to read for those who are already familiar with the works of the philosophers in question. That aside, the book presents fairly compelling biographies of 18 Western Philosophers. The author, in many cases, includes value judgments on both the works of the philosophers, and the philosophers themselves. Although such judgments may be widely accepted, I found it jarring. Finally, the writing is a bit thick throughout, so it wasn't the most pleasant of reads.

In short, read a book about Western Philosophy before you read this book.
