Provides the story of the migration of the wood thrush as it travels between New England and Central America and meets two very different boys on either end of the long trip who protect the bird's nesting place until it returns. Jr Lib Guild.
Mary Lyn Ray is a conservationist and author of several picture books for children. She was born in Louisiana in 1946 and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. Ray has lived in New England since 1964, when she first came east to attend college. She currently lives in a 150-year-old farmhouse in South Danbury, New Hampshire, which she restored herself.
This was a very nice way to understand bird migration. It may need to be explained that this is what the book is speaking about, but it is a neat way to see how bird migration affects people too.
3.75 stars I like the poetry and I could hear the sound of the Thrush...but then I got confused. There are two boys in the story. I guess one speaks Spanish. It is hard to tell as the two pictures look the same.
I hope this one works for storytime because I really like it. It has some Spanish language dialogue, if you're looking to incorporate it into your storytime or just general reading to your own child.
I didn't care for the illustrations and the text was just OK. I liked the concept of describing the summer and winter habitats of the thrush, but I didn't like how it was done.
