Spunky Kylie Jean Carter's life ambition is to be a beauty queen. This fall, she is chosen as one of the Little Dazzlers, a group of youngsters who learn some of the dance routines that the older girls do. When she is chosen to perform at halftime at her brother T.J.'s homecoming football game, Kylie Jean can't let T.J. down since he calls her his lucky charm. The book is filled with lots of warm family love and support. Unlike many teens, especially star quarterbacks, T. J. actually acknowledges his little sister in public. Young readers will enjoy this easy-to-read title and fall in love with Kylie Jean's other sibling, bulldog Ugly Brother, as well as the illustrations that show off the characters' great big eyes. While I remain convinced that there are better things for which to aspire than being Homecoming Queen or a beauty pageant queen, I still like Kylie Jean.
I read this to my 2nd grade students. It was full of laughs and portrayed Texas football culture PERFECTLY! It gave me the chance to share more about my childhood with my students, about something I don't usually think about sharing.
