This is a functional linguistics approach to language: how people use language for real purposes in our society - developing language to get our needs met and our meanings clear. I realize how important it is for children to learn the structure of language and vocabulary and how it changes with different text types:
For example: recounts Purpose : Tells what happened
Orientation - When/who/what/where
series of events
personal comment at end

Language: simple past tense, action verbs, linking item to do with time (then), use of first person pronoun for personal recount
