I used this for my independent study in historical linguistics. I'd only ever delved into the subject of linguistics on my own before so was (nor am) by no means fluent in all of the ~linguistics lingo~ but this book was incredibly helpful, well laid out, gave amazing examples (almost too many--but thats never a complaint) to root you concretely to the topics it explained, and also many great exercises (if there was one you did not fancy, there'd surely be another offered within the same chapter for you to test out whether you understood the contents...though some were quite lengthy). I'd highly recommend to anyone with a curiosity in how language changes despite whether or not they've studied linguistics before :)
