I read this cuz I have always wanted to know why my mom and many others say it’s really good. I originally thought this series was a mystery/ detective one, but it is actually a sci-fi adventure (Welp stupid me). But no sci-fi element is shown in this book. The author said it himself that he hadn’t considered this a sci-fi series when he wrote it.
3.5 stars cuz it didn’t particularly speak to me. But I still had a great time reading it.
Plot:
This book was a ride. The plot is insane. It goes from the main character checking out someone throwing diamonds to the sea, to a whole journey of treasure hunting and keeping alive. Literally everyone is trying to kill our main character. The ocean surviving bit caught me off guard. It’s such a wide range book. There are so SO many plot twists and it’s insane. And then there’s so much fighting, like A LOT. I also didn’t expect there would be such a heavy romance plot. Towards the end, everything is completely drama.
Writing:
When I first started reading, the writing style was a bit weird to me. It isn’t bad by any means, it’s just not the usual style I've read. But after a while, I got used to it. I love the humor in this book. Every sentence that is written solely for humor is perfectly my cup of tea.
Every character's actions in this book are romance-driven, but there are no backstories to all these romantic interactions - they're all love at first sight. I was not emotionally invested in any of them as a result. The action scenes are a bit excessive and boring. It took a bit too long to get to the mystery behind the treasure, which was, by the way, anticlimactic.
This is the first in the series and it shows. It doesn't know what kind of story it wants to be. Wuxia? Mystery? Inconsistent characters with a story that is uninteresting.
This is terrible and not worth the time to read. Just stick to the later additions to this series.
I had this impression all of his wisely series were soft scifi, but this was actually just an adventure story. Ni recently passed away. I thought I'd revisit all his stories.
