Reading this manual for teaching English pronunciation to non-native English speakers reveals dozens of ideas for becoming a more effective instructor. There's a reason why pronunciation practice has always been put on the back burner by instructors and creators of teaching methodologies for pronunciation improvement. We have been trying to teach students to minimize their accent whereas what we should be doing is to encourage them to discover the beat and balance of how to pronounce the language. It's not the accent that's the problem but knowing where to put the stress in each thought group.
Judy Gilbert has boldly taken on this challenge to dig deep and find out what the real root of the challenge is. Then she offers some interesting tips using such interesting tools as a kazoo and thick elastic bands that are usually used to hold together broccoli.
There's lots to learn here and one read through is clearly not enough.
