Jolan en zijn metgezellen hebben hun eerste proef overleefd. De onheilspellende Manthor moet nu bepalen welke van de vijf kandidaten zijn ware uitverkorene is. Daarvoor zullen ze moeten doordringen in Asgard om het schild van de god Thor te stelen. Een menselijkerwijs onmogelijke opgave, temeer omdat de tijd beperkt is. Het is nu ieder voor zich!

PT Confesso que tem sido uma experiência algo estranha ler estas novas histórias de Thorgal sem o seu protagonista habitual. E, nos breves momentos em que surge, parece uma sombra do que foi, quase uma personagem diferente — distante do Thorgal que aprendi a conhecer.
Ainda assim, há algo de refrescante em acompanhar as aventuras de Jolan e dos seus novos companheiros.
Este volume não me cativou tanto como o anterior, mas continua a proporcionar uma leitura agradável.

EN I must admit, it’s been a somewhat strange experience reading these new Thorgal stories without its usual protagonist. And in the few moments when he does appear, he feels like a shadow of his former self — almost a different character, far removed from the Thorgal I came to know.
Even so, there’s something refreshing about following Jolan’s adventures and those of his new companions.
This volume didn’t captivate me as much as the previous one, but it still offers an enjoyable read.

'Het schild van Thor' draait met name om Jolan en speelt zich voor een flink deel in Asgard af. Tot nu toe bleven de Germaanse goden op de achtergrond en zagen we alleen Frigg, maar nu laten Sente en Rosiński een stuk meer van de godenwereld zien. Hoogtepunt wat dat betreft is het verhaal dat een lid van het houtje-touwtjeleger aan Jolan vertelt: Rosiński past hier een meer illustratieve stijl toe die charmante plaatjes oplevert. Het houtje-touwtjeleger zelf is overigens Sente's beste vondst en Rosiński heeft zichtbaar plezier in het tekenen ervan. Sente's meer pacifistische scenariostijl is verfrissend na decennia van de dood en verderf zaaiende Van Hamme: ook in dit album gaat er niemand dood.

L'aventure continue avec Jolan au centre. Il y a aussi un développement intéressant à propos du troisième enfant de Thorgal. Les pions se placent pour ouvrir la voie à d'autres perspectives intéressantes pour la suite de la série. Il n'y a pas la magie que générait les actions avec Thorgal, mais l'esprit de la série demeure grâce aux dessins de Rosinski.

Jorhal and all his little buddies going off to be the wizard's apprentice is a good idea but sadly they don't get to do a whole lot. The whole trip to Asgard feels like a bust. Wasted opportunity. A bit of a shame. Is this the first depiction of Odin and Thor in the comic?

Jolan ma w sobie tyle charyzmy co ojciec - czyli w ogóle. W tym tomie momentami jest zdecydowanie za dużo gadania. Poza tym wszystko spójne z kilkoma poprzedniczkami - kompletnie niezajmująca historia

Jolan doit récupérer le bouclier de Thor afin de remporter le concours de Manthor. Toujours intéressant de visiter Asgard avec les personnages et d'approfondir leurs relations avec les dieux nordiques.

Je fais ma fangirl à emprunter des Thorgals à la bibliothèque pour me réconforter en cette période stressante lol. Mais purée j'avais pas encore lu celles-ci (je m'étais arrêté à l'album "Kriss de Valnor" depuis genre........ mes 18 ans lol) et j'adore cette nouvelle direction!! Le changement de cap est un peu tiré par les cheveux lol mais les COULEURS!!! Et les vibes de Labyrinth (1988), avec les petits soldats de chiffon qui contiennent les âmes des morts!! Et les petites scenettes dans le village Viking aussi sont parfaits <3 Et j'aime tant Jolan, ça ne me dérangerait pas du tout que la série continue juste avec lui (j'ai réalisé assez abruptement que c'était exactement à son chara-design que je pensais, quand j'ai créé mon propre protagoniste Viking blond :'D J'ai ouvert "La Couronne d'Ogotaï" et soudain je me suis trouvée nez-à-nez avec mon perso en voyant Jolan adulte... c'était lui en fait qui vie dans ma tête depuis tout ce temps :'D)

Magia połączona z prawdziwą przygodą - myślałam, że wolę bardziej przyziemne odcinki, jednak "Tarcza Thora" pozytywnie mnie zaskoczyła. Przygody Jolana w Międzyświecie i Asgardzie tchną świeżością, a dodatkowy wątek Czerwonych Magów działających w wiosce Thorgala sprawia, że część ta stała się jedną z moich ulubionych.
Wielki plus za towarzyszy/adwersarzy Jolana, każdy jest inny, część butna i niemożliwa, część opanowana i myśląca, a Jolan... jest po prostu synem Thorgala, a to mówi samo za siebie.
Nie mogę się doczekać rozwinięcia wątku Aniela.

De longues explications historiques, verbeuses et d'une utilité contestable à mon avis, viennent ralentir le récit (qui, déjà, n'est pas super palpitant).
Jolan se révèle le parfait sosie de son père, côté caractère : bon, pas guerrier pour une miette, bienveillant, le cœur sur la main, toujours gagnant mais jamais triomphant. Trop beige, trop lisse, comme personnage pour susciter de l'intérêt.
On comprendra que pour ce lecteur-ci ce fut un pensum.

En este tomo, Jolan y sus compis deben competir por recuperar el escudo de Thor y así demostrar quien es el Elegido.
Por otro lado, en las tierras del norte, un grupo de magos secuestran al hijo pequeño de Thorgal y Aaricia, Aniel... Quedan varios temas por resolverse, vamos pues por el siguiente tomito!!!

Bello, ottimi disegni. L’unica critica che muoverei: è tutto troppo secondo le regole. Non ci sono vere sorprese (e se Jolan non fosse stato l’eletto? Tanto per dirne una). Comunque sempre interessante.

Pues tengo que decir que lo he disfrutado. Creo que estábamos ya tan cansados de tantas penurias con Thorgal, que darle algo de protagonismo a Jolan acaba funcionando bien. El grupo de aventureros tiene carisma y se nota.

The focus of the Thorgal books is now squarely on Jolan, with Thorgal very much a supporting character. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the building blocks that make this such a remarkable series are all still in place. It remains a great blend of mythology, fantasy and history, all neatly tied together with Rosinski’s distinctive artwork. Perhaps if he were removed from the equation it would lose that essential element – but thankfully, to date, that’s not been the case.
Jolan has successfully fulfilled the task set by Manthor and has assisted his fellow challengers to boot. Now Manthor has set a new challenge, to retrieve Thor’s shield from Asgard. On the surface it looks like a difficult task, made worse by a tight timescale and the fact that of the five challengers only one can be crowned as the Chosen One. The other challengers all have abilities as strange as they are different to Jolan’s, and all seem as intent to collect the shield for themselves. But brute force and a show of strength are not what’s needed to claim the shield within the allotted time, and it’s Jolan that pieces this together. The question is, can he put this knowledge to his advantage.
We learn a little more about Manthor’s backstory too, and how Jolan’s family is being drawn into the mystery back on Earth. Thorgal, it seems, isn’t completely out of the picture.
Sente’s writing complements Van Hamme’s nicely. The emphasis and focus are different, but it still very much feels like we’re operating within a Thorgal book. The five challengers do feel like they’ve been lifted directly from a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, but at least Sente has avoided misogynistic stereotyping. Manthor’s Army is also an interesting touch. Dead warriors reincarnated in the bodies of rag doll soldiers. I’m not sure where he’s going with this, but coupled with Rosinski’s visual depictions they’re certainly an interesting addition.
The Thorgal books remain one of my favourites. I’ve you’ve not tried them before I’d suggest you start from the beginning rather than here, as this book does lean on characters and situations that we’ve come across before. It doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t enjoy it, but you may find it’s a richer experience to do so.

Désormais, on suit les aventures de Jolan, mais Thorgal est encore largement présent, bien que peu impliqué dans l'action principale.
Le dessin de Rosinski est toujours aussi somptueux (et peut-être même plus qu'avant maintenant qu'il est passé à la peinture directe.) et sert au mieux un récit comme toujours très impregné de fantastique.

I wasn't interested in Jolan til I ran out of Thorgal adventures, without having to skip this cycle through stuff happening to/about him, so I went for this run and am pleased! Sente is the ideal "non-Van-Hamme" for this and maybe I just like his "version" of the character better.

Les transitions entre l'histoire de Jolan et du reste de sa famille se font un peu maladroitement. Jolan est d'ailleurs beaucoup plus intéressant que la sorcière/chat un peu clichée. Le dialogue entre Thorgal et Aaricia est bizarre. Par contre, j'aime bien les compagnons de Jolan.

Vraiment le vent nouveau qui court sur la série, plus ciblée sur Jolan est vraiment bénéfique, et le nouveau scénariste a su relancer l'histoire !

Jolan continues to be the protagonist of this story arc that concludes Manthor's quest. The trials will end in Asgard with Jolan competing for Thor's shield.
