Eager was born in and grew up in Toledo, Ohio and attended Harvard University, class of 1935. After graduation, he moved to New York City, where he lived for 14 years before moving to Connecticut. He married Jane Eberly in 1938 and they had a son, Fritz.

Eager was a childhood fan of L. Frank Baum's Oz series, and started writing children's books when he could not find stories he wanted to read to his own young son. In his books, Eager often acknowledges his debt to E. Nesbit, whom he thought of as the best children's author of all time.

A well-known lyricist and playwright, Eager died on October 23, 1964 in Stamford, Connecticut, at the age of fifty-three.

This was the first book I ever purchased, the first book I ever loved and the book that turned me into a reader. My mother had taken me to a booksale at my school when I wss in kindergarten and told me I could buy any book there. I chose Mouse Manor. It was a chapter book, and far beyond my reading ability but I fell in love with the few, but beautiful, full page illustrations of Miss Myrtilla Mouse, her visit to see Queen Victoria and Bertie Cheesebisker, the palace playboy mouse who becomes her hero. Queen Victoria, it seems, is a lover of cats.
I still own this book and revisit it often and still love it as much as I did the first time I heard the story.

Great read, I loved the references to Pussy Cat Pussy Cat Where Have You Been? I've been to London to visit the queen. Pussy cat pussy cat what did you there? I frightened a little mouse under her chair. And the illustrations were charming and beautiful! I wonder if there were more references I didn't even get. I wish I could own a copy of this great little book from 1952!

I picked this up because the author of Nightbird mentioned Edward Eager as one of her favorite childhood authors. I'm hoping it's an enjoyable read!

This is not like any other Edward Eager book I've read, but it's so cute! It's got beautiful illustrations and a charming story with a happy ending. My mother got me a first edition copy of this book for Christmas this year and it's just beautiful.

I really liked the artwork, and the story made my laugh out loud two or three times.
