I studied this book for about 3 weeks prior to taking the CBEST, and I passed on the first try. The testing strategies and tips are excellent; however, the math covered is far harder than that found on the actual test. I recommend using this book in conjunction with the math practice test provided by the CTC. I will say that the math review in the back of the book is very helpful as a refresher for more basic concepts; but the math on the practice test presented here is more difficult than necessary. Overall a helpful book for test taking strategies; but don't let it be your only source for CBEST studying.

This book provided practice tests and in depth information for problems on the practice tests; but overall the subject material was way more advanced than the actual test and thus felt like I wasted my time with this book. I did pass the CBEST on my first attempt.

Ahhhhh, yes . . . the CBEST. And the Cliff's Prep CBEST? Great book, but when I took the test who woulda thunk that the dummied down version I took in LA was so . . . dummied down. The sad state of the educational nation is that there were several people who were taking the test AGAIN!!! Yeeeesh! Parents? Be scared. Be very scared for your children's education. I only took the test so I could substitute teach while working on my masters, and it was decent pay. But the experience was priceless. I worked in one classroom because a teacher in training (he had completed his credential, just needed classroom hours) needed me there. And one time while working with a student, showing her how to check her answer for subtraction (you know, add up the two bottom numbers get the top one), the 3rd-grade-teacher-hopeful said, "You can do that? I'll have to remember that one." Yeeeesh! Home teaching is a viable alternative . . . Did I say alternative? Parents! You have no choice!!!

After reading two other CBEST prep books, I found this one to be the best. It is clear, exhaustive, and gives great tips. It could have gotten into more detail in regards to explaining basic math concepts for those of us who haven't seen it in over a decade, but that can quickly be supplemented with YouTube tutorials. The questions are very similar to those found on the test.

I took the test today and easily passed reading and math... and I'm a terrible test taker.

unhelpful. i've found the online CBEST practice test admistered by the CBEST gov site as well as testprepreview.com to be far more superior to anything in the book (assuming you understand the basics of testing and have taken similar tests in the past).
