Extremely helpful critical work. Get it if doing deep work in Matthew.

Note the pattern of buildup, spectacular entrance, withdraw, return. Birth, Ministry, Conflicts with Herod, Pharisees, Resurrection/Broad Story

Immensely insightful commentary on Matthew. Though technical, massive, and not perfect in all its arguments, it is a top choice for pastors and scholars.

We read a sizable percentage of this commentary for a Gk exegesis course. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed Allison's 'Studies in Matthew,' I found this commentary drab. A vast majority of it is form, source, and redaction criticism. I've been told that volumes 2–3 move toward a literary criticism, which is more my cup of tea.

I only read select portions. Incredibly thorough engagement with the Greek text. If you can filter through what is unhelpful, you'll find some valuable gems.
