Gastrointestinal endoscopy is now mainstream and the focus is now changing from developing new techniques to enhancing the efficiency and quality of fundamental techniques. There are three elements to this agenda: initial training, continuous quality improvement and patient empowerment. For the first time, the book is accompanied by two CD-ROMs - featuring video and animation of how to perform the techniques. The first CD-ROM covers the upper GI tract and consists of two sections: (1) the background to instruments and how to get set up, and (2) how to perform diagnostic techniques. The second CD-ROM covers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in colonoscopy. Cotton and Williams' book has evolved with each new edition to reflect developments in the field of endoscopy over the last 20 years. This fifth edition draws on the vast experience of the authors and heralds current changes in both endoscopy and publishing. The emerging 'back to basics' attitude of endoscopy opinion formers with regard to the teaching of endoscopy has resulted in a more focused table of contents specifically targeted at newcomers to this specialty.
Peter Cotton grew up in England, and graduated as a doctor in 1963 from Cambridge University and St. Thomas Hospital Medical School (London). He worked as a Professor in London, then moved to USA to Duke University and in 1994 to Charleston, South Carolina to initiate the Digestive Disease Center at the Medical University. Peter has been active in many National and International organizations and has given invited lectures and demonstrations in over 50 countries. His bibliography includes more than 900 medical publications and 11 medical textbooks. His stories about Fred the snake started as a bedtime story for his kids to remind them how (not) to cross the road. When they had their kids, they asked “what happened to Fred-Fred”. Peter found a wonderful illustrator (Bonnie Lemaire) and published “When Fred the Snake was Squished and Mended”. This proved popular and he got on a roll, with now 10 books about Fred, managed by Bublish inc. After recovering from squishing, Fred went to school with the boy, received some friends from Jungle Jim, explored Charleston, went to the beach, and then went camping. Books 7,8, 9 have Fred and friends touring the sights of the USA. The 10th explains the Chinese Zodiac. The books have been well reviewed and gained several awards including 5 Mom’s choice gold medals. Reviewers have compared his work to Lewis Carroll, Dr Suess, Roahl Dahl and Hiliare Belloc. Peter and Marion Cotton live on Dewees Island, SC. They are blessed with 4 “children”, 8 grands and 4 great grands. They enjoy family, friends, travel, wildlife and golf.
