When photographer Ingrid Hunter takes a temporary word-processing job at a prestigious San Fransisco law firm, she is surprised to find that the personnel director, Miranda Falk, is a high school acquaintance. A casual lunch date with Miranda convinces Ingrid that the title of personnel director is perfect for her former Miranda's manipulation skills have improved a great deal, and she quickly interrogates Ingrid about all aspects of her personal and professional life. Several hours later Miranda's body is found on the streetwalk outside the offices of Bramwell, Stinson & Flint-and there are far too many unhappy employees who might have wanted her to disappear.

I'm the author of
Runaway Dragonette (what if "the Bachelorette" was a shapeshifting dragon princess?),
Valkyrie on Planet Fury (why the Furies make really bad hostesses),
Gravitas: Valkyrie in the Forbidden Zone (a unique look at human-alien First Contact),
Valkyrie in the Demon Realm (demons and aphrodisiacs don't mix),
The Falstaff Vampire Files (Sir John Falstaff, undead and misbehaving in San Francisco),
The Bride of the Living Dead (a romantic comedy for women who love monster movies too much),
and four books in the mystery series featuring Josephine Fuller, sleuth of size who doesn't apologize
Larger Than Death, Large Target, At Large and A Ton of Trouble.

Newspapers and magazines have published my essays, reviews and interviews--including my favorite with Darlene Cates, star of "What's Eating Gilbert Grape"! Many of these short pieces can be found on my web page. I live in San Francisco. When not writing, I can be found reading and spoiling my cats.

Another boring damaged main female character trope who is attracted to terrible men and knows it but still does it and thinks she's strong and independent but still needs a strong male role to pull her out, sigh. Automatic 1 star.
So depressing to read, I almost stopped and put it in the fire.
I had high hopes since she took martial arts. Photography was her main gig and put her in touch with decent professionals.
Extra star for red herrings! And gosh, poor Miranda! In the last few pages it explains her outburst in the beginning of the book, it now makes sense. My heart goes out to her. But that side plot line that brings in all the characters doesn't help for 3 stars. Writing was good. I just hate the weak damaged females. Maybe it's how they got men to read books? Or just to get published? Sad...

A very compelling read, which I had not read for a long time. It is good to go back to those good books after some time.

And I was surprised by the ending, but there were no hidden clues, all the information needed to point out the suspect were there.
